You open Windows Update, select Check for updates, and expect to see the latest Windows feature update.

Instead, Windows tells you that your device is up to date, even though you know a newer version is available. Another computer in the office may already have received it, while yours continues to wait.

How Long Does a Safeguard Hold Last?

There is no fixed duration.

A hold remains in place until the underlying issue is resolved and the solution has been validated.

  • A firmware patch becoming available
  • Microsoft confirming that the risk no longer applies

After a hold is removed, it can still take time for Windows Update to refresh the device’s eligibility. Microsoft notes in some compatibility cases that the update may take up to 48 hours to appear, assuming no other safeguards apply. 

Restarting the computer and checking for updates again may help, but repeatedly pressing the button every few minutes will not accelerate Microsoft’s rollout.

What Should You Do While You Wait?

Install Current Windows Updates

Continue installing routine security and quality updates for your existing Windows version.

A safeguard hold usually blocks the feature update, not every Windows update.

Keeping the current version fully patched may also install a fix that helps remove the hold.

Update Drivers

Check:

Review available driver updates.
