If only Downloads is slow

The problem may involve:

  • thumbnails

If OneDrive is slow

Look at:

OneDrive Files On-Demand allows files to appear in File Explorer even when the complete file is not stored locally.

Microsoft explains that online-only files remain visible in File Explorer but are downloaded when needed.

That means double-clicking a cloud-only file may involve:

Explorer → OneDrive → internet → download → application

rather than simply opening a file already on the SSD.

For important folders that employees need frequently, consider:

Right-click > Always keep on this device

where appropriate.

That downloads the files locally.

Do not do this blindly across enormous SharePoint libraries or OneDrive estates because it can consume substantial storage.

7. Check Mapped Drives and Network Locations

A disconnected network drive can make Explorer appear frozen while Windows waits for the remote location to respond.

Look under:

This PC

Check mapped drives for:

  • red crosses
  • disconnected status
  • unavailable servers
  • old NAS systems
  • obsolete shares

If the business no longer uses a mapped drive, remove it.

If the drive is still required, test whether the underlying resource can be reached.

Local folder → fast
Mapped drive → slow

Investigate the network, VPN or server instead.

8. Check Whether the Network Is the Real Bottleneck

When a network folder is slow, test local connectivity.

Try opening files on the server from another computer.

If everybody is affected, the problem may involve:

  • internet connection

Microsoft treats file sharing over a network as a separate network function, so local File Explorer performance and network-share performance should be diagnosed separately.

One slow mapped drive does not mean Windows Explorer itself is broken.

Avoid permanently disabling thumbnails across the entire organisation unless you genuinely need to.

They are useful.

11. Check Folder Optimisation

Windows attempts to optimise folders for particular content types.

Right-click a slow folder and select:

Properties > Customise

Look at:

Optimise this folder for

  • General items
  • Documents

A Downloads folder incorrectly treated as an image library can spend unnecessary time trying to generate metadata and thumbnails.

For mixed-content folders, General items is usually the best diagnostic choice.

12. Check Windows Search and Indexing

If searching folders is slow but ordinary navigation is fine, investigate indexing separately.

Open:

Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows
