Bluetooth Won’t Pair on macOS 26? Try These Steps Before Panicking
Bluetooth problems can be surprisingly disruptive on a business Mac.
A wireless keyboard that will not connect can stop somebody signing in. Headphones can disappear just before a Teams meeting, while mice, trackpads, barcode scanners, presentation remotes and other specialist devices may suddenly refuse to pair.
If this starts happening after upgrading to macOS 26 Tahoe, it is tempting to assume the operating-system update has broken Bluetooth.
That is not necessarily the case.
The problem could be as simple as:
- a low battery
- the accessory still being connected to another device
- an old pairing record
- wireless interference
- outdated accessory software
- a temporary macOS issue
- a fault with the accessory itself
Before replacing anything or trying risky fixes from old internet forums, work through these steps in order.
First, Work Out What Is Actually Failing
Start by narrowing down the problem.
Ask:
- Does the accessory appear under Nearby Devices?
- Does it appear under My Devices but refuse to connect?
- Does it connect and then disconnect?
- Is it connected but not actually working?
- Does the problem affect one Bluetooth device or all of them?
- Does the accessory work with another computer or phone?
- Did the problem start immediately after a macOS update?
This distinction matters.
If one accessory fails while everything else works, the accessory, battery or saved pairing is the more likely cause.
If every Bluetooth device fails, investigate the Mac, macOS, interference or system software more closely.
1. Check the Accessory Is Actually Ready to Pair
Start with the obvious things.
Make sure the accessory is:
- switched on
- sufficiently charged
- close to the Mac
- in pairing or discovery mode
- compatible with macOS
- not actively connected to another device
Apple’s current Mac guidance says a Bluetooth device needs to be switched on and discoverable before it will appear under System Settings > Bluetooth.
Pairing mode varies between manufacturers.
Some devices enter pairing mode automatically when switched on.
Others require you to hold a button or use a specific control sequence.
Check the manufacturer’s instructions rather than assuming the device is discoverable simply because its power light is on.
Check Whether It Is Connected Somewhere Else
Bluetooth accessories often reconnect automatically to the last device they used.
Your headset could already be connected to your iPhone.
A keyboard could be attached to another Mac nearby.
If necessary, temporarily disconnect or forget the accessory on the other device, then put it back into pairing mode.
This simple check fixes more Bluetooth problems than people expect.
2. Turn Bluetooth Off and Back On
Open:
Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth
Turn Bluetooth off, wait briefly, then turn it back on.
You can also control Bluetooth from Control Centre. Apple continues to provide both methods in current macOS.
Then:
- Switch the accessory off.
- Wait a few seconds.
- Switch it back on.
- Activate pairing mode.
- Look under Nearby Devices.
- Select Connect.
If Bluetooth itself will not enable or no devices appear, restart the Mac normally.
Avoid repeatedly forcing the Mac off unless the entire system is frozen.
3. Forget the Device and Pair It Again
Sometimes the stored pairing relationship becomes unreliable.
Go to:
System Settings > Bluetooth
Find the accessory under My Devices, open its details and choose Forget This Device.
Then:
- Turn the accessory off.
- Turn it back on.
- Put it into pairing mode.
- Wait for it to appear under Nearby Devices.
- Select Connect.
Apple’s current Bluetooth settings continue to provide the controls needed to connect and manage saved accessories from System Settings.
If the accessory keeps reconnecting to another Mac, phone or tablet, disconnect it from that device temporarily too.
4. Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad? Use the Cable
This is one of the easiest Apple-specific fixes.
If you are using a:
- Magic Keyboard
- Magic Mouse
- Magic Trackpad
connect it directly to the Mac using the appropriate USB-C or Lightning cable and switch the accessory on.
Apple says connecting a Magic accessory with its cable both charges it and pairs it with the Mac. Once pairing is complete, you can disconnect the cable and use Bluetooth normally.
This is particularly useful when:
- your wireless mouse is disconnected and you cannot easily reach Bluetooth settings
- your keyboard is needed to enter a password
- the accessory does not appear under Nearby Devices
- you have recently removed the old pairing
If you use a third-party cable, make sure it supports data as well as power.
A charge-only cable may not complete the pairing process.
5. Check Whether It Has Paired but the Mac Is Using the Wrong Device
Sometimes Bluetooth is working perfectly.
The problem is somewhere else.
This is common with headphones, microphones and speakers.
Open:
System Settings > Sound
Check both:
Output
and
Input
Make sure the Bluetooth accessory is selected.
Also check applications such as:
- Microsoft Teams
- Zoom
- Webex
- browser-based meeting systems
- recording applications
Those applications can have their own audio-device settings and may continue using the Mac’s internal microphone or speakers even though a Bluetooth headset is connected.
6. Check Bluetooth Application Permissions
Some applications communicate directly with Bluetooth devices and may require permission.
Open:
System Settings > Privacy & Security > Bluetooth
Review which applications have requested access.
Only allow trusted software that genuinely needs Bluetooth.
Do not simply enable access for every application in an attempt to fix a connection problem.
7. Install macOS and Accessory Updates
If Bluetooth worked normally before a macOS upgrade, check for newer updates.
Go to:
System Settings > General > Software Update
Install the latest approved macOS 26 update available for the Mac.
Also check for updates to:
- accessory firmware
- manufacturer configuration software
- Teams or other meeting software
- endpoint-security tools
- device-management agents
- audio utilities
Use the hardware manufacturer’s official software or update process.
Avoid random driver-download websites.
For company-managed Macs, updates may be controlled through platforms such as Microsoft Intune or Jamf. Do not remove corporate management or security software because Bluetooth stopped working; the IT provider may instead need to update or reconfigure it.
8. Check for Wireless Interference
Bluetooth uses the 2.4 GHz radio spectrum.
In a busy office, that spectrum can become crowded.
Potential sources of interference include:
- busy 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi
- USB 3 devices and hubs
- poorly shielded cables
- wireless cameras
- docks
- cordless phones
- large numbers of Bluetooth devices
- physical obstructions
Apple specifically recommends considering wireless interference when Magic accessories have connection problems.
Try:
- Moving the accessory closer to the Mac.
- Disconnecting unnecessary USB hubs or docks.
- Moving external drives away from the Mac.
- Testing the accessory somewhere else.
- Switching nearby wireless equipment off temporarily.
- Using 5 GHz or 6 GHz Wi-Fi where appropriate.
If Bluetooth works perfectly when the device is next to the Mac but becomes unreliable in its normal position, interference or range becomes a strong suspect.
9. Test the Accessory on Another Device
At this point, establish whether the problem follows the accessory.
Try pairing it with another:
- Mac
- iPhone
- iPad
- compatible PC or device
If it refuses to pair anywhere, the accessory itself may have:
- a failing battery
- damaged controls
- corrupt firmware
- a hardware fault
Check the manufacturer’s reset or firmware process.
Then do the reverse.
Try another known-working Bluetooth accessory with the affected Mac.
If other Bluetooth devices work normally, making major changes to macOS is unlikely to be justified.
10. Try Safe Mode
If several accessories are affected and the basic fixes have failed, Safe Mode can help determine whether third-party software is contributing.
Apple uses Safe Mode as a troubleshooting method for identifying problems caused by software loaded during startup.
On an Apple silicon Mac:
- Shut down the Mac.
- Hold the power button until startup options appear.
- Select the startup disk.
- Hold Shift.
- Select Continue in Safe Mode.
- Sign in and test Bluetooth.
If Bluetooth works in Safe Mode, investigate recently installed or updated software such as:
- VPN clients
- endpoint-security applications
- audio utilities
- device-control tools
- peripheral-management software
Do not permanently disable company security software.
Use the result as evidence for your IT provider or software supplier.
11. Run Apple Diagnostics if Nothing Bluetooth Works
If no Bluetooth accessories work and software troubleshooting has not helped, it becomes reasonable to investigate hardware.
Apple Diagnostics can help identify potential hardware problems with the Mac.
For an Apple silicon Mac, Apple’s current process begins by shutting down the Mac and holding the power button until startup options appear.
If diagnostics generates a reference code, record it.
That information can be useful to your IT provider or an Apple-authorised repair service.
A successful diagnostic test does not rule out every intermittent fault, but it can help determine whether professional hardware investigation is the next sensible step.
Special Advice for Apple Desktop Macs
Be careful when switching Bluetooth off on a:
- Mac mini
- iMac
- Mac Studio
- Mac Pro
if your only keyboard and mouse are wireless.
Connect a wired input device first or use the cable-pairing method for a compatible Magic accessory.
Otherwise you can create a much more inconvenient problem than the one you started with.
What Not to Do
Bluetooth troubleshooting advice online often includes fixes copied from much older versions of macOS.
Avoid jumping immediately to:
- deleting Bluetooth
.plistfiles - deleting random Library content
- running undocumented Terminal commands
- installing “Bluetooth repair” utilities
- removing corporate security software
- reinstalling macOS
- factory-resetting specialist hardware without recording its configuration
These steps can create additional problems while doing nothing to fix the original cause.
There is also no reason to perform an SMC reset on an Apple silicon Mac for a Bluetooth pairing problem.
Use Apple's current pairing, Safe Mode and diagnostic methods first.
A Quick Bluetooth Troubleshooting Order
For most problems, use this order:
- Charge the accessory.
- Make sure it is in pairing mode.
- Disconnect it from other devices.
- Toggle Bluetooth off and on.
- Restart the Mac.
- Forget the accessory and pair it again.
- Use a cable for Apple Magic accessories.
- Check audio and Bluetooth permissions.
- Update macOS and accessory software.
- Check for wireless interference.
- Test the accessory with another device.
- Test another Bluetooth accessory with the Mac.
- Try Safe Mode.
- Run Apple Diagnostics if every Bluetooth device fails.
This process usually tells you whether the problem is with the accessory, the Mac, software or the surrounding environment before anything drastic is attempted.
