Wi-Fi Keeps Dropping After the Tahoe Update: 6 Fixes That Actually Work
Updating to macOS Tahoe should improve the security, reliability and capabilities of your Mac. Unfortunately, some users find that their Wi-Fi becomes unstable shortly after upgrading.
The Mac may connect normally and then disconnect a few minutes later. Video meetings may freeze, cloud files may stop synchronising and websites may report that there is no internet connection—even though other devices on the same network continue working.
This does not necessarily mean the Mac’s wireless hardware has failed. A major macOS update can expose an outdated VPN client, incompatible security software, stale network settings, an expired IP address or a problem with the wireless router.
Here are six practical fixes that can resolve persistent Wi-Fi problems after upgrading to macOS Tahoe.
Before You Start: Identify Where the Problem Is

Fix 2: Forget the Wi-Fi Network and Renew the DHCP Lease
The Mac stores information about previously joined wireless networks. After a major update, that saved configuration may no longer behave correctly.
Forgetting and rejoining the network creates a fresh connection.
How to Forget the Network
- Open System Settings.
- Select Wi-Fi.
- Scroll down and select Advanced.
- Find the affected network.
- Select the menu beside its name.
- Choose Remove From List.
- Confirm by selecting Forget.
- Rejoin the network and enter its password.
Apple confirms that removing a known network causes the Mac to discard its saved connection information until the user joins it again manually.
Make sure you know the Wi-Fi password before removing the network. On an organisation using certificate-based authentication or a managed wireless profile, contact IT rather than removing the configuration yourself.
Renew the Mac’s IP Address
If the Mac reconnects but continues losing internet access, renew its DHCP lease:
- Open System Settings.
- Select Network.
- Select Wi-Fi.
- Choose Details beside the connected network.
- Select TCP/IP.
- Choose Renew DHCP Lease.
- Select OK.
DHCP is the process through which the router assigns the Mac an IP address. Restarting the Mac normally renews this address automatically, but it can also be renewed manually. If the previous lease has expired or conflicts with another device, the router may issue a new address.
This fix is particularly useful when the Wi-Fi icon remains connected but websites, email and cloud applications suddenly stop working.
Fix 3: Restart the Mac and the Network Equipment
Restarting may sound too simple, but it clears temporary network states and forces the devices involved to establish new connections.

Check Whether the Router Has Run Out of Addresses
A router can normally assign only a limited number of IP addresses. In a busy office containing laptops, phones, tablets, printers, meeting-room systems and guest devices, that pool can become exhausted.
Apple notes that when a router has no available IP addresses, new devices may be unable to communicate with the network or internet. Adjusting the DHCP range or lease time may help the router reclaim addresses that are no longer being used.
This change should be made by the network administrator. Employees should not alter office router settings without authorisation.
Fix 4: Check VPN, Firewall and Security Software
A Tahoe upgrade may change how macOS handles network extensions. An older VPN, web-filtering application, endpoint-security agent or firewall utility may then interfere with the connection.
Apple specifically advises checking software that monitors or interacts with network traffic when a Mac can join Wi-Fi but cannot reliably reach internet services.

- Open the action menu.
- Select Locations.
- Choose Edit Locations.
- Select the plus button.
- Name the location something clear, such as Tahoe Wi-Fi Test.
- Select Done.
- Join the Wi-Fi network again.
- Test the connection.
The exact options may vary slightly according to the installed Tahoe release and whether the Mac is centrally managed.
If the new location resolves the problem, the original network configuration may contain a stale or conflicting setting.

The Wi-Fi symbol only confirms that the Mac has established a connection with the wireless network. It does not prove that the router can reach the internet.
