You press the power button on your Mac or MacBook and nothing seems to happen. No Apple logo. No login screen. Perhaps the display stays completely black.

Before assuming the logic board, battery or storage has failed, it is worth working through the problem systematically.

A Mac that won’t turn on can be caused by something as simple as a faulty charger, disconnected power source, troublesome USB device or frozen power state. A Mac that actually powers on but cannot load macOS is a different problem again.

Apple’s current troubleshooting guidance starts with checking power, holding the power button for around 10 seconds and disconnecting accessories before moving on to startup recovery.

Here is the order we recommend.

First: Is the Mac Actually Not Turning On?

This is an important distinction.

A Mac showing any of the following is turning on:

  • An Apple logo
  • A progress bar
  • A flashing folder with a question mark
  • A circle with a line through it
  • Startup Options
  • Recovery Assistant
  • A blank screen accompanied by other signs of life

Apple treats these as startup problems rather than a complete failure to power on.

If absolutely nothing appears, start with power.

Step 1: Check the Power Properly

For a MacBook, connect the charger directly to a known-working wall socket.

Temporarily bypass:

  • USB-C docks
  • Monitors providing USB-C power
  • Extension leads
  • USB hubs
  • Multiport adapters

Check the charging cable and adapter for visible damage and, where possible, test another compatible charger and cable.

For an iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio or Mac Pro, make sure the mains cable is firmly connected and try another wall socket.

Apple specifically recommends checking the power cable, socket and another compatible adapter or cable where available.

If the MacBook battery has been completely discharged, leave it connected to power before repeatedly trying to switch it on.

Also consider charger wattage. An underpowered USB-C charger may be capable of charging some devices but may not be appropriate for your particular MacBook.

Step 2: Force the Mac Off and Try Again

A Mac can occasionally become stuck in a power state that makes it appear completely dead.

Press and hold the power button for around 10 seconds.

On a MacBook with Touch ID, the Touch ID button is also the power button.

Release it, then press the power button normally.

This is one of Apple’s recommended first steps for a Mac that does not appear to turn on.

There is little benefit in repeatedly tapping the power button. Use one controlled long press followed by a normal attempt to start the machine.

Step 3: Disconnect Everything

Remove every non-essential external device.

That includes:

  • USB drives
  • External SSDs
  • Printers
  • Docks
  • USB hubs
  • Phones
  • Memory-card readers
  • Audio interfaces
  • Ethernet adapters
  • External displays where practical
  • Other USB or Thunderbolt devices

Then try the 10-second power-button procedure again.

Apple specifically recommends removing external accessories when troubleshooting a Mac that will not start.

If the Mac starts normally afterwards, reconnect your devices one at a time.

This can reveal a faulty peripheral, cable, hub or dock.

Step 4: Check Whether the Mac Is Running With a Black Screen

A Mac black screen does not necessarily mean the computer has no power.

Listen and look for signs such as fan noise, keyboard illumination, notification sounds, trackpad feedback or output on an external monitor.

If the Mac appears to power on but the screen remains blank, Apple treats that as a separate startup problem and recommends trying macOS Recovery.

For a MacBook, also increase the display brightness.

Where practical, testing a known-working external monitor can help distinguish a macOS startup problem from an internal-display issue.

Step 5: Know Whether You Have Apple Silicon or Intel

The next steps differ depending on the Mac.

Modern Macs use Apple silicon, identified in macOS by a Chip entry such as an M-series processor.

Older Macs use an Intel processor.

If the Mac still boots sufficiently to check, choose:

Apple menu > About This Mac

Apple also uses this distinction when providing Safe Mode instructions because the startup procedure is different for Apple silicon and Intel Macs.

If the Mac will not start at all, identify the model from its serial number, purchase records or your organisation’s device inventory.

Apple Silicon: Try Startup Options

Shut the Mac down completely.

Then:

  1. Press and continue holding the power button.
  2. Keep holding it while the Mac starts.
  3. Release the button when Loading startup options appears.
  4. Select Options.
  5. Select Continue.

This opens macOS Recovery.

If Startup Options appear, you already know something useful: the Mac is receiving power and progressing significantly into its startup process.

The problem is therefore less likely to be a completely dead machine.

Try Disk Utility From Recovery

Once in macOS Recovery, open Disk Utility.

Choose:

View > Show All Devices

Then run First Aid against the relevant volumes, containers and storage device.

Disk Utility can find and repair certain formatting and directory-structure problems that can prevent a Mac from starting correctly.

If the internal storage does not appear at all, or Disk Utility reports errors it cannot repair, avoid repeatedly experimenting with the disk if important data is involved.

That can be the point where professional diagnosis becomes more appropriate.

Try Safe Mode

Safe Mode is useful when the Mac has power but macOS refuses to start normally.

It can help determine whether the problem is being caused by software that loads during startup.

Apple Silicon

Shut down the Mac, then:

  1. Press and hold the power button until Startup Options appear.
  2. Select the startup volume.
  3. Hold Shift.
  4. Select Continue in Safe Mode.

Intel Mac

Turn the Mac on or restart it and immediately hold Shift until the login window appears.

If the Mac works in Safe Mode but repeatedly fails during a normal startup, investigate recently installed software, login items, security products, drivers and other software that loads with macOS.

Run Apple Diagnostics

If the Mac can reach Startup Options but you suspect a hardware problem, Apple Diagnostics is worth running.

Apple Silicon

Press and hold the power button until Startup Options appear.

Then hold:

Command + D

Intel

Switch the Mac on and immediately hold:

D

If that does not work on an Intel model, Apple recommends trying Option + D.

Apple Diagnostics can help identify hardware components that may require attention.

Record any reference codes that appear.

What If You See a Flashing Question-Mark Folder?

A flashing folder containing a question mark means something quite specific.

The Mac cannot find an available startup disk containing a usable macOS installation.

Start in macOS Recovery and use Disk Utility to check the startup disk.

If Disk Utility successfully repairs the disk, restart the Mac.

If the symbol returns, reinstalling macOS from Recovery may be required. Apple says reinstalling macOS from Recovery can normally be performed without removing your apps or personal data, although having a backup remains strongly advisable.

If Disk Utility cannot see the drive at all, storage failure becomes a more serious possibility.

Apple Silicon and T2 Macs: Firmware Revive

Occasionally the problem is lower-level than macOS itself.

A supported Apple-silicon Mac or Intel Mac with an Apple T2 Security Chip can sometimes require its firmware to be revived or restored.

Apple’s current 2026 process uses another Mac and places the affected machine into DFU mode. The affected Mac then appears in a DFU window in Finder on the other Mac.

This is an important update from older troubleshooting guides that may refer primarily to Apple Configurator.

Apple recommends trying Revive Mac first.

A revive attempts to recover the firmware without erasing the Mac.

If revival fails, Restore Mac can be used — but restore erases the Mac and returns it to factory condition.

Because the required USB-C port, cable and DFU button sequence vary depending on the Mac model, this is not something we recommend attempting casually when important business data exists on the machine.

What About Resetting the SMC?

This is where a lot of old Mac troubleshooting guides create confusion.

Apple Silicon

Do not perform an SMC reset.

Apple states that this procedure is only relevant to Intel-based Macs; it is not required on Apple-silicon Macs.

Intel

An SMC reset can still be useful for certain power, charging and startup problems on Intel Macs.

The procedure varies depending on whether the Mac has a T2 Security Chip and whether it is a notebook or desktop model.

Rather than blindly using a keyboard combination found on an old forum post, identify the exact Mac model before carrying out an SMC reset.

What About NVRAM?

NVRAM reset is another Intel-specific troubleshooting option.

On compatible Intel Macs, the startup combination is:

Option + Command + P + R

Apple continues to list this as an Intel startup key combination.

NVRAM can hold settings related to startup disks and other system configuration, so resetting it can occasionally resolve startup-related behaviour.

It is unlikely, however, to revive a Mac receiving absolutely no electrical power.

Intel Mac: Try macOS Recovery

On an Intel Mac, turn the computer on and immediately hold:

Command + R

This starts the built-in macOS Recovery system.

Intel Macs can also use Internet Recovery combinations where appropriate.

From Recovery you can access tools including Disk Utility and macOS reinstallation.

Mac Stuck on the Apple Logo

If the Apple logo appears but the progress bar never completes, the Mac is clearly receiving power.

The problem is now a startup failure, not a no-power condition.

Disconnect unnecessary peripherals and try Safe Mode or macOS Recovery.

Possible causes include damaged system files, software loaded at startup, storage problems or an interrupted macOS update.

Apple recommends shutting down a Mac that remains stuck at the Apple logo and then moving into further startup troubleshooting if the problem continues.

When Should You Stop Troubleshooting?

Stop and seek professional help if:

  • The Mac has suffered liquid damage.
  • You smell burning or see physical damage.
  • The charger or charging port becomes abnormally hot.
  • The Mac repeatedly starts and immediately switches off.
  • Disk Utility cannot detect the internal storage.
  • Apple Diagnostics reports a hardware fault.
  • The Mac contains important data that is not backed up.
  • DFU firmware recovery appears necessary.
  • The Mac remains completely dead with a known-working power supply.
  • You are being prompted to erase the machine and need the data.

The priority should change once valuable business data is involved.

Getting the computer running is important, but avoiding unnecessary data loss is more important.

A Sensible Mac Won’t Turn On Troubleshooting Order

For most Macs, use this sequence:

  1. Check the wall socket, charger and cable.
  2. Connect directly rather than through a dock.
  3. Hold the power button for around 10 seconds.
  4. Disconnect all external accessories.
  5. Check whether the Mac actually has power but a blank display.
  6. Try Startup Options or macOS Recovery.
  7. Run Disk Utility First Aid.
  8. Try Safe Mode.
  9. Run Apple Diagnostics.
  10. For Intel Macs, consider SMC or NVRAM troubleshooting.
  11. Consider DFU firmware revival on supported Apple-silicon or T2 Macs.
  12. Stop before performing an erase or restore if important data has not been recovered.

This approach works from the simplest and least destructive checks toward the more invasive procedures.

Mac Problems Are Different in a Business Environment

For a home computer, an unexpected Mac failure is frustrating.

For a business it can mean an employee unable to work, inaccessible documents, missed meetings and potentially important company information trapped on the device.

The solution should therefore go beyond simply trying random startup commands.

Businesses should also consider:

  • Whether the user's data is backed up
  • Whether company files are synchronised to cloud storage
  • Whether FileVault recovery information is available
  • Whether a replacement device can be deployed quickly
  • Whether the Mac is centrally managed
  • Whether the problem affects other devices of the same model
  • Whether recent macOS or application changes are relevant

Good IT support should concentrate on restoring the employee's ability to work, not merely fixing one piece of hardware.
