How to Debloat Windows 11 Safely: What You Can Remove and What You Should Leave Alone
A new Windows 11 PC can arrive with far more software than you actually need.
Manufacturer utilities, trial security products, gaming applications, promotional software, cloud services and programs configured to launch automatically can leave a computer feeling cluttered before you have installed anything yourself.
That has created an entire industry around Windows 11 debloating.
Unfortunately, some of the advice online goes much too far.
Removing an unwanted game is one thing. Running a PowerShell script that strips out dozens of Windows packages, disables services and removes components you do not recognise is something very different.
The safest way to debloat Windows 11 in 2026 is not to remove as much as possible. It is to remove the things you genuinely do not need while leaving Windows servicing, security and hardware components intact.
Microsoft itself recommends removing unused applications, disabling unnecessary startup software and reducing unwanted background activity when trying to improve Windows performance.
Here is how to do it properly.
What Does “Debloating” Windows 11 Actually Mean?
Debloating should simply mean reducing unnecessary software and background activity.
That might involve uninstalling a manufacturer trial, stopping an application launching every time you sign in, removing a game you never use, cleaning temporary files or disabling notifications from an application you rarely open.
It should not mean deleting folders from C:\Windows, disabling random Windows services or removing every AppX package because somebody on a forum described it as bloatware.
Some Windows components that appear to do very little are dependencies for other parts of the operating system.
Removing them can cause problems months later when Windows Update, a feature update, Microsoft Store application or hardware function suddenly depends on them.
Will Debloating Windows 11 Make Your PC Faster?
It can, but expectations need to be realistic.
Deleting a tiny application that never runs will usually make little measurable difference.
The bigger performance gains normally come from reducing applications that:
- Launch automatically
- Run continuously in the background
- Consume significant memory or processor time
- Perform regular scans
- Install browser extensions
- Run duplicate security or cloud-sync services
- Constantly check for updates
Microsoft specifically identifies unnecessary startup applications as a source of increased startup time and background activity. Task Manager can also show the estimated startup impact of individual applications.
So before uninstalling anything, start there.
Start by Disabling Startup Apps
Press:
Ctrl + Shift + Esc
Open Task Manager > Startup apps.
You can also use:
Settings > Apps > Startup
Look for applications you recognise but do not need running every time you sign in.
That might include game launchers, music applications, meeting programs you rarely use, manufacturer advertising utilities, creative-software launchers or cloud applications you no longer use.
Disable them and restart Windows.
Microsoft supports controlling startup applications through both Settings and Task Manager, and Task Manager shows their startup impact to help identify the heavier applications.
If the computer immediately feels faster, you have achieved something useful without uninstalling anything.
What Can You Usually Remove Safely?
The safest candidates are applications that are clearly optional and that you know you do not use.
Manufacturer trial software is often a good starting point. New PCs may include temporary antivirus subscriptions, VPN trials, promotional software, games or third-party applications bundled with the hardware.
Unused games and entertainment applications can also go.
Likewise, if you have several applications performing exactly the same job — perhaps multiple PDF readers, video-meeting applications, cloud-storage clients or screenshot utilities — removing the ones you do not use can simplify the system.
Windows provides supported uninstall options through:
Settings > Apps > Installed apps
Microsoft also supports uninstalling traditional desktop applications through Control Panel where necessary.
If Windows gives you an ordinary Uninstall button, that is generally a much better route than searching for a PowerShell command to rip the package out manually.
Be More Careful With Manufacturer Utilities
Not everything carrying a Dell, HP, Lenovo, Intel, AMD or Realtek name is unnecessary.
Some manufacturer applications are little more than promotional interfaces.
Others control important functions including firmware updates, battery charging, thermal management, docking stations, function keys, audio or power management.
If you are unsure what something does, identify it before removing it.
The application called Dell Optimizer, for example, is very different from an Intel chipset component hidden further down the installed-app list.
The general rule is simple:
Removing an optional companion application may be fine. Removing the driver or system component underneath it may not be.
Things You Should Normally Leave Alone
Some parts of Windows are poor debloating targets even when they appear unnecessary.
Avoid aggressively removing Windows Security, Microsoft Defender, Windows Update components, hardware drivers, chipset components, Microsoft Store infrastructure, App Installer, Visual C++ runtimes, .NET runtimes or the Windows component store.
Also avoid manually deleting anything from:
C:\Windows\WinSxS
Different Visual C++ entries are not necessarily duplicates. Applications can require different runtime versions and architectures.
Similarly, hardware drivers with unfamiliar names may be responsible for Wi-Fi, audio, Bluetooth, USB-C, cameras, Windows Hello, touchpads, docking stations or power management.
If you do not know what a Windows component does, research it before removing it.
Don't Start Disabling Windows Services
One of the oldest Windows optimisation tricks is to open Services and start disabling anything that sounds unnecessary.
It is rarely a sensible approach on a modern Windows 11 PC.
A service showing almost no current processor usage is not making your computer meaningfully slower simply because it exists.
Worse, services often depend on one another.
Disabling the wrong one can cause a printer, VPN, Bluetooth device, Windows Update or other feature to fail later rather than immediately.
That makes troubleshooting much harder because the problem appears long after the original change.
Be Very Wary of One-Click Debloat Scripts
PowerShell is incredibly useful for administering Windows.
That does not mean every PowerShell script downloaded from the internet is appropriate for your computer.
Many debloat scripts attempt to remove large numbers of Microsoft Store packages, change registry settings, disable telemetry, stop services, modify Windows Update or alter security settings in a single operation.
The real problem is not PowerShell itself.
It is that you may have no idea what 100 individual commands inside somebody else's script are changing.
A script written for an older Windows 11 build may also make assumptions that are no longer valid after Microsoft changes Windows.
For a home computer, that can result in a frustrating repair.
For a business computer, it can interfere with security controls, device management or company applications.
Use Windows' Own Storage Cleanup Before Removing System Components
Sometimes the computer feels bloated because the drive is simply too full.
Open:
Settings > System > Storage
Windows provides Storage Sense and temporary-file controls for removing unnecessary files.
Microsoft recommends using these tools when low storage is affecting Windows performance.
Review the categories before deleting anything, particularly Downloads, Recycle Bin and files associated with previous Windows installations.
You may recover considerably more disk space this way than by removing a handful of built-in Windows applications.
What About Edge, OneDrive, Teams and Copilot?
These applications need a little more thought than an unused game.
If you prefer another browser, you can make it your default without trying to manually remove Windows web components.
OneDrive can be unnecessary on some personal PCs but extremely important on a business machine where Desktop, Documents or other company information may be synchronised through Microsoft 365.
Microsoft does support uninstalling OneDrive from Windows 10 and 11, but you should confirm that required files have synchronised and that the organisation does not depend on it before removing it.
The same principle applies to Microsoft Teams, Outlook, OneNote and Microsoft 365 applications.
Do not uninstall an application merely because you do not open it if the computer belongs to an organisation that requires it.
Windows 11 Now Has a Better Debloating Option for Businesses
This is one of the biggest improvements to Windows app management in 2026.
Microsoft now provides policy-based in-box app removal for managed Windows 11 Enterprise and Education devices.
Microsoft's current documentation states that supported devices running Windows 11 24H2 or newer can use Group Policy or MDM, including Microsoft Intune, to remove selected preinstalled Microsoft Store applications.
The policy can remove Microsoft-provisioned inbox apps as well as selected MSIX/APPX packages.
More importantly, while the policy remains active, Windows blocks those selected applications from simply being reinstalled again.
This changes the way businesses should think about debloating.
Instead of running a homemade PowerShell script on every new laptop, IT administrators can define a supported device policy.
For example, an organisation might decide that its standard business PCs do not require gaming applications, consumer media applications or certain other preinstalled packages.
The organisation can remove those applications centrally during deployment and apply the same configuration to future devices.
That is far more predictable than manually stripping Windows on each PC.
Microsoft originally highlighted this capability as one of the important management features associated with Windows 11 25H2, and its current documentation now covers supported 24H2-and-newer Enterprise and Education deployments.
Debloating Business PCs Should Be About Standardisation
For a company, the goal should not really be "debloating".
It should be creating a standard Windows build.
Every computer should ideally have the software employees need, the security controls the business requires and as little unnecessary software as practical.
That means deciding centrally which applications are:
Required, optional or prohibited.
Microsoft Intune and other management platforms can then deploy or remove applications consistently rather than relying on individual employees to clean up their own machines.
This also makes troubleshooting easier.
If every laptop has a completely different combination of removed services, registry hacks and unofficial scripts, supporting those computers becomes unnecessarily difficult.
A Safer Windows 11 Debloating Strategy
If you want a cleaner Windows 11 PC, use this order:
First, update Windows and restart it.
Then examine Task Manager and disable unnecessary startup applications.
Remove obvious manufacturer trials and software you genuinely do not use through Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
Review background permissions and notifications.
Use Windows Storage settings to clean temporary files.
Then restart and use the computer normally before removing anything else.
If the PC belongs to a business, check with whoever manages your IT before removing security software, cloud-storage clients, remote-support tools or manufacturer utilities.
That approach is slower than running a one-click script.
It is also much less likely to leave you repairing Windows afterwards.
When Debloating Isn't the Answer
If your Windows 11 computer is genuinely slow, removing applications may not solve the underlying problem.
Look at Task Manager > Processes and identify what is actually consuming processor, memory or disk resources.
Microsoft recommends checking resource usage when troubleshooting a slow Windows PC and notes that older hardware may simply not see substantial improvements from software optimisation.
A laptop with inadequate memory, failing storage, thermal problems or hardware that is struggling with modern workloads will not suddenly become fast because you removed Weather and a game launcher.
Measure the problem first.
