A MacBook that feels hot and sounds like a miniature jet engine can be alarming. The fans may suddenly speed up during a video call, while browsing the internet or even when the Mac appears to be doing very little.

In many cases, loud fans do not mean your MacBook is about to fail. They are part of its cooling system and increase their speed when internal components become warm.

However, fans that run at full blast for long periods may point to excessive processor use, demanding background activity, poor airflow or a software problem.

The good news is that there are several safe checks you can carry out without opening your MacBook.

Why Do MacBook Fans Become So Loud?

Your MacBook produces heat whenever its processor, graphics hardware, battery or other internal components are working.

The harder the Mac works, the more heat it creates. Its cooling system responds by increasing fan speed and moving warm air away from sensitive components.

This is normal when carrying out demanding tasks such as:

  • Editing or exporting video
  • Playing games
  • Running virtual machines
  • Installing a major macOS update
  • Backing up a large amount of data
  • Using several external displays
  • Running complex creative or development software

The problem is when the fans remain loud during light tasks or continue running after demanding software has been closed.

Start With Activity Monitor

One of the most useful tools for investigating overheating is Activity Monitor.

You can find it by opening:

Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor

Select the CPU tab and click the % CPU column to sort applications and processes by their current processor usage.

Look for anything using an unusually high amount of CPU for an extended period.

Common causes include:

  • Web browsers with many open tabs
  • Microsoft Teams or Zoom
  • Adobe applications
  • Cloud backup software
  • OneDrive or Dropbox synchronisation
  • Spotlight indexing
  • Photos library analysis
  • Antivirus scans
  • Applications that have stopped responding

Some system processes may briefly use significant resources. That does not necessarily indicate a problem. However, an application that remains near the top of the list for a long time may be responsible for the heat and fan noise.

Try closing and reopening the application. If the issue continues, check whether an update is available.

Restart Your MacBook

A restart can resolve more problems than many people expect.

Mac users often leave their devices running or sleeping for weeks. During that time, applications and background services may become stuck, use excessive memory or continue running unnecessarily.

Restarting your Mac can:

  • Close hidden background processes
  • Clear temporary system resources
  • Restart essential macOS services
  • Stop unresponsive applications
  • Reduce excessive memory and processor use

After restarting, allow the MacBook a few minutes to settle before deciding whether the problem has been resolved.

Close Applications You Are Not Using

Closing an application window does not always fully quit the application.

Look at the Dock. Applications with a small dot beneath their icon are still running.

You can quit them by right-clicking the icon and selecting Quit, or by opening the application and pressing:

Command + Q

Applications such as Teams, Slack, Spotify, Photoshop, Outlook and cloud storage tools may continue to use resources in the background even when their main windows are closed.

Reducing the number of active applications can lower processor usage, memory pressure and temperature.
