Wi-Fi Calling and Dropped Calls: Is the Carrier or Your iPhone to Blame?

Wi-Fi Calling is designed to solve one of the most common mobile problems: poor indoor signal.

When the mobile network is weak, your iPhone can route ordinary calls through a Wi-Fi connection instead. You use the normal Phone app, your usual number and the same contacts. No separate calling application is required.

When it works, Wi-Fi Calling can transform reception in thick-walled buildings, rural homes, basements and offices with limited mobile coverage.

When it does not work, the symptoms can be confusing:

  • Calls disconnect when you walk between rooms.
  • The other person can hear only parts of the conversation.
  • Incoming calls go straight to voicemail.
  • The Wi-Fi Calling indicator appears and disappears.
  • Calls drop when you leave the building.
  • One iPhone works perfectly while another fails on the same Wi-Fi.
  • The problem occurs only with one mobile provider.

The challenge is identifying which part of the connection is responsible.

A Wi-Fi call depends on several systems working together:

  1. Your iPhone
  2. The local Wi-Fi network
  3. The broadband connection
  4. The mobile provider’s Wi-Fi Calling platform
  5. The mobile signal used when the call moves away from Wi-Fi

This guide explains how to test each layer and determine whether the real problem is the carrier, the phone or the network between them.

What Is Wi-Fi Calling?

Wi-Fi Calling lets an iPhone make and receive normal mobile calls through a Wi-Fi network when the cellular signal is weak or unavailable.

On current iOS versions, you can normally enable it under:

Settings → Mobile Service → [Choose a line if required] → Wi-Fi Calling

Turn on:

Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone

Depending on the iPhone model, carrier and software version, the setting may also appear through the Phone settings.

Apple explains that when Wi-Fi Calling is active, “Wi-Fi” appears beside the carrier name in the status area, and calls are routed over the Wi-Fi connection. 

Your carrier must support Wi-Fi Calling for your particular account and device. It is not purely an iPhone feature that works independently of the mobile provider.

Wi-Fi Calling Is Still a Carrier Service

Although the call travels through your broadband connection, your mobile provider still handles:

  • Your phone number
  • Call routing
  • Authentication
  • Billing or allowance usage
  • Emergency-call information
  • Handover to the mobile network
  • SMS support where offered
  • Compatibility with voicemail and other calling features

This is why a fast internet connection does not automatically guarantee reliable Wi-Fi Calling.

The carrier’s platform must recognise the iPhone, authenticate the SIM or eSIM and maintain the voice session correctly.

A problem can therefore exist even when:

  • Websites load quickly.
  • Streaming works normally.
  • Video calls are stable.
  • Other Wi-Fi devices appear unaffected.

What Happens When You Leave Wi-Fi Coverage?

When a Wi-Fi call moves out of range, the ideal result is a seamless handover to the carrier’s mobile voice service.

Apple says calls can switch automatically from Wi-Fi to the carrier’s network using Voice over LTE, or VoLTE, when it is available and enabled. Feature availability depends on the carrier. 

This handover is one of the most common points of failure.

For example, EE states that a call leaving Wi-Fi coverage can switch to 4G Calling. If the phone cannot find a suitable 4G connection, the call will drop. 

Therefore, a call that disconnects as you walk out of the house does not necessarily mean the Wi-Fi failed. The Wi-Fi may have ended normally, but the mobile network was not strong enough to continue the call.

The Four Main Types of Dropped-Call Problem

Most Wi-Fi Calling faults fall into one of four categories.

1. The Wi-Fi connection is unstable

The iPhone loses contact with the access point or experiences high packet loss, interference or roaming problems.

2. The broadband connection is unsuitable

The Wi-Fi signal is strong, but the internet connection has poor latency, congestion, packet loss or brief outages.

3. The mobile provider cannot maintain the call

The carrier account, Wi-Fi Calling platform, carrier settings or local mobile service may be at fault.

4. The iPhone has a configuration or hardware problem

The phone may have outdated carrier settings, corrupted networking configuration, a SIM issue or damaged wireless hardware.

The goal is to isolate these possibilities rather than changing everything simultaneously.

First Check: Is the Call Actually Using Wi-Fi Calling?

Do not assume that a call is travelling through Wi-Fi simply because the iPhone is connected to a router.

Look for your carrier name followed by an indication such as:

Wi-Fi

WiFiCall

WiFi Calling

The wording varies by provider.

Apple states that the iPhone displays “Wi-Fi” after the carrier name when Wi-Fi Calling is available and active. 

You may need to open Control Centre to view the full network status.

If the indicator is not present, the phone may still be using the mobile network.

Possible reasons include:

  • The cellular signal is considered strong enough.
  • Wi-Fi Calling is disabled.
  • The carrier has not provisioned it.
  • The current Wi-Fi network blocks the required traffic.
  • The feature has failed to register.
  • Carrier settings are outdated.
  • The SIM or eSIM account does not support it.

A Useful Airplane Mode Test

A simple way to test Wi-Fi Calling is:

  1. Connect to the Wi-Fi network.
  2. Turn on Airplane Mode.
  3. Manually turn Wi-Fi back on.
  4. Wait for the Wi-Fi Calling indicator.
  5. Make a normal phone call.

Airplane Mode removes the cellular fallback, forcing the test to depend on Wi-Fi Calling.

Interpret the result carefully.

The call works reliably

The iPhone, carrier account and current Wi-Fi connection can support Wi-Fi Calling.

A normal dropped call may therefore be related to handover between Wi-Fi and cellular coverage.

The call does not connect

The problem may involve:

  • Wi-Fi Calling activation
  • The carrier account
  • Router or firewall restrictions
  • Carrier settings
  • The SIM or eSIM
  • The broadband connection

Do not use this test where you need guaranteed cellular availability. Emergency-call behaviour varies, and Wi-Fi Calling may rely on registered address and location information when mobile service is unavailable. Apple advises confirming an emergency-services address when enabling the feature. 

Step 1: Confirm Wi-Fi Calling Is Enabled

Open:

Settings → Mobile Service

Choose the relevant line if the iPhone uses Dual SIM, then open:

Wi-Fi Calling

Turn on:

Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone

You may be asked to confirm an address for emergency-service purposes.

For Dual SIM users, check both lines individually. Wi-Fi Calling may be enabled for one number but not the other.

Turn the setting off, wait approximately 30 seconds and turn it back on. This can force the phone to register with the carrier’s Wi-Fi Calling platform again.

Step 2: Update the Carrier Settings

Carrier settings are small configuration packages supplied by the mobile provider. They can adjust calling, mobile data, 5G, VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling behaviour.

Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi or mobile data, then open:

Settings → General → About

Wait on that screen for approximately 30 seconds.

When an update is available, iOS should display a prompt.

Apple says carrier-settings updates can improve mobile connectivity and add support for features including Wi-Fi Calling. 

You can also see the installed carrier-settings version on the About screen.

If you recently:

  • Changed mobile provider
  • Installed a new SIM
  • Activated an eSIM
  • Transferred the number
  • Upgraded the tariff
  • Restored the iPhone

a carrier-settings update may be particularly important.

Step 3: Update iOS

Open:

Settings → General → Software Update

Install the latest compatible stable update after confirming that the iPhone has a current backup.

Apple recommends checking both carrier settings and iOS when calls fail or cannot be received. 

An iOS update can correct:

  • Wi-Fi connection bugs
  • Modem problems
  • Calling-service failures
  • Dual SIM issues
  • Carrier compatibility
  • Handover behaviour

After updating, restart the phone and test again.

Step 4: Restart the iPhone and Router

Restart the iPhone normally.

Then restart the router or mesh system:

  1. Switch it off.
  2. Wait approximately 30 seconds.
  3. Switch it back on.
  4. Allow the internet and Wi-Fi services to reconnect fully.
  5. Reconnect the iPhone.
  6. Test another call.

A router can continue serving web pages while experiencing intermittent problems that affect real-time voice traffic.

Voice calls are less tolerant than general browsing of:

  • Packet loss
  • Brief connection pauses
  • High jitter
  • Access-point roaming delays
  • Router overload

Avoid Restarting Business Network Equipment Without Planning

On a workplace network, restarting the router, firewall or access points may interrupt:

  • Cloud applications
  • VoIP phones
  • VPNs
  • Payment terminals
  • Security systems
  • Remote users

Coordinate the restart with the appropriate administrator.

Step 5: Test Close to the Router

Make a call while standing close to the main router or access point.

Avoid walking around during the first test.

If the call is stable close to the router but drops elsewhere, the likely issue is Wi-Fi coverage rather than the carrier or iPhone.

EE advises that poor Wi-Fi coverage can lead to dropped Wi-Fi calls, particularly when there is no 4G signal available for fallback. 

Possible solutions include:

  • Moving the router to a more central location
  • Adding properly positioned access points
  • Improving mesh backhaul
  • Replacing an old router
  • Reducing interference
  • Avoiding weak repeater links

Wi-Fi Bars Do Not Tell the Whole Story

A phone may show several Wi-Fi bars while the connection still suffers from:

  • Packet loss
  • Congestion
  • Radio interference
  • Poor mesh roaming
  • Slow broadband upload
  • Router CPU overload
  • Unstable DNS or internet sessions

The icon indicates connection strength, not overall voice quality.

Step 6: Test Another Wi-Fi Network

This is one of the most useful diagnostic steps.

Try Wi-Fi Calling on:

  • A trusted friend’s home broadband
  • Another office network
  • A different broadband provider
  • A mobile hotspot from another device, where supported
  • A separate access point

Use the Airplane Mode test again when appropriate.

It works on another network

The original Wi-Fi or broadband connection is probably responsible.

It fails on every Wi-Fi network

The iPhone, carrier account, SIM, carrier platform or local service is more likely to be involved.

Do not use an untrusted public Wi-Fi network for sensitive troubleshooting.

Step 7: Test Another iPhone on the Same Carrier

Where possible, test another iPhone using:

  • The same Wi-Fi network
  • The same mobile provider
  • Wi-Fi Calling enabled
  • A similar call destination

Interpret the results:

Both phones drop calls

Suspect:

  • Wi-Fi or broadband
  • Carrier service
  • Local mobile fallback coverage
  • Router compatibility

Only one phone drops calls

Suspect:

  • iPhone settings
  • SIM or eSIM provisioning
  • Carrier-settings version
  • Hardware fault
  • iOS configuration

Test Your SIM in Another Compatible Phone

When practical and authorised, place the SIM in another compatible unlocked phone.

For an eSIM, transferring it may be less convenient and could require carrier assistance.

The fault follows the SIM or account

The carrier account or provisioning is likely involved.

The fault remains with the original iPhone

The iPhone or its configuration becomes the stronger suspect.

Step 8: Check the Broadband Connection

Wi-Fi Calling uses little bandwidth compared with video streaming, but it needs consistency.

The critical measurements are:

  • Latency
  • Jitter
  • Packet loss
  • Upload reliability
  • Brief disconnections

A connection can achieve a high headline download speed while still performing poorly for live calls.

Common causes include:

  • Saturated upload bandwidth
  • Cloud backups
  • Video conferencing
  • Security-camera uploads
  • Large file synchronisation
  • Gaming traffic
  • Poor-quality broadband
  • Router bufferbloat
  • ISP instability

EE notes that poor Wi-Fi Calling audio can result from insufficient available bandwidth, including when several devices are streaming or using the network heavily. 

Pause Heavy Network Activity

During a test call, temporarily pause:

  • Cloud backups
  • Large uploads
  • Game downloads
  • 4K streaming
  • Video meetings
  • NAS synchronisation
  • Security-camera cloud uploads

If the call quality improves, the network needs traffic management, more capacity or better Quality of Service configuration.

Step 9: Investigate Mesh Wi-Fi Roaming

Mesh systems can improve coverage but introduce additional handover points.

A call may drop when the iPhone moves between:

  • The main router and a satellite
  • Two mesh nodes
  • 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz
  • Access points using different settings
  • A strong but congested node and a weaker nearby node

Test by staying beside one access point.

Then walk through the area where calls usually drop.

If the call fails at the same boundary each time, review:

  • Node placement
  • Backhaul quality
  • Channel planning
  • Firmware
  • Fast-roaming options
  • Minimum signal thresholds

Too many closely spaced mesh nodes can be as problematic as too few.

Step 10: Forget and Rejoin the Wi-Fi Network

Open:

Settings → Wi-Fi

Tap the information button beside the network, then choose:

Forget This Network

Reconnect using the correct password.

This removes the iPhone’s saved configuration for that network and creates it again.

Before doing this, make sure you know the password and any business authentication details required.

For an enterprise Wi-Fi network using certificates or device management, contact IT rather than removing the profile yourself.

Step 11: Check VPN and Security Applications

A VPN or filtering application can interfere with network behaviour.

Temporarily disconnect:

  • Consumer VPNs
  • Corporate VPNs
  • DNS filters
  • Ad-blocking profiles
  • Security applications
  • Network inspection tools

Then test Wi-Fi Calling again.

If the issue disappears, update or reconfigure the relevant service rather than permanently leaving security protection disabled.

On business-managed devices, do not remove security or management profiles without authorisation.

Step 12: Check Low Data Mode

Open:

Settings → Wi-Fi

Tap the information icon beside the current network and review:

Low Data Mode

Also check the mobile line under:

Settings → Mobile Service → Mobile Data Options

Low Data Mode is not normally the direct cause of dropped calls, but temporarily turning it off can remove one variable when troubleshooting constrained network behaviour.

Step 13: Test With Wi-Fi Assist On and Off

Wi-Fi Assist helps foreground applications use mobile data when the Wi-Fi internet connection is poor. It is enabled by default and appears under:

Settings → Mobile Service → Wi-Fi Assist

Apple describes it as a feature that switches supported foreground internet activity to cellular when Wi-Fi quality is poor. 

Wi-Fi Assist is not the same as Wi-Fi Calling handover, so it should not be treated as a guaranteed fix for call drops.

However, when diagnosing confusing Wi-Fi-to-mobile switching, test one call with it enabled and another with it disabled. Record whether the behaviour changes.

Return the setting to the state that provides the most reliable normal use.

Step 14: Check 4G Calling or VoLTE

A Wi-Fi call leaving Wi-Fi coverage may need VoLTE or 4G Calling to continue.

Open:

Settings → Mobile Service → Mobile Data Options → Voice & Data

The exact options vary by carrier and iPhone model.

You may see options involving:

  • 5G Auto
  • 5G On
  • 4G
  • VoLTE
  • Voice & Data

Do not disable modern voice services permanently unless directed by the carrier.

When calls drop only as you leave Wi-Fi, ask the provider to confirm:

  • VoLTE is active on the account.
  • Wi-Fi-to-cellular handover is supported.
  • The local mobile signal is sufficient.
  • The SIM or eSIM is correctly provisioned.

Step 15: Check Dual SIM Behaviour

Dual SIM adds another layer of complexity.

Confirm:

  • Which line is used for voice calls
  • Which line has Wi-Fi Calling enabled
  • Whether Allow Mobile Data Switching is enabled
  • Whether the affected line has active service
  • Whether the carrier supports Wi-Fi Calling for that tariff

Open:

Settings → Mobile Service

Select each line and review its settings separately.

Try temporarily disabling the unused line and test again.

Do not remove an eSIM unless you have the information and carrier support needed to restore it.

Step 16: Toggle Airplane Mode

Apple recommends turning Airplane Mode on, waiting approximately five seconds and turning it off when normal calls fail. 

This forces the wireless services to register again.

After the mobile and Wi-Fi indicators return:

  1. Confirm Wi-Fi Calling is active.
  2. Make another test call.
  3. Check whether the issue persists.

Step 17: Reset Network Settings

Use this only after less disruptive checks.

Open:

Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset

Choose:

Reset Network Settings

Apple notes that this removes saved Wi-Fi passwords, preferred networks, VPN settings and APN settings previously used on the device. 

After the reset:

  1. Reconnect to Wi-Fi.
  2. Re-enable Wi-Fi Calling if necessary.
  3. Allow carrier settings to update.
  4. Test the phone before reinstalling VPNs or network profiles.

This does not erase photos, applications or documents, but it can cause considerable inconvenience.

Step 18: Check for Carrier Outages and Account Problems

Contact the mobile provider and ask them to check:

  • Local outages
  • Wi-Fi Calling provisioning
  • VoLTE or 4G Calling provisioning
  • Account restrictions
  • Billing blocks
  • SIM errors
  • eSIM status
  • Network-side calling errors
  • Number-porting issues

Apple specifically recommends asking the carrier to confirm that the account is correctly configured, that there are no local outages or billing blocks and that calls are not showing network-side errors. 

Use precise examples:

Calls drop when moving from Wi-Fi to 4G.

Wi-Fi Calling works in Airplane Mode but drops during handover.

The issue happens on three different Wi-Fi networks.

Another iPhone on the same Wi-Fi works normally.

This information is much more useful than simply reporting “bad calls”.

Step 19: Ask the Carrier to Re-Provision Wi-Fi Calling

Carrier support may be able to remove and re-add Wi-Fi Calling or voice-service provisioning on the account.

This is worth requesting when:

  • The option is enabled but never registers.
  • It stopped after changing SIM or eSIM.
  • It failed after transferring the number.
  • It works on another SIM in the same iPhone.
  • Carrier settings and iOS are current.
  • Several Wi-Fi networks have been tested.

After the carrier makes a change:

  1. Restart the iPhone.
  2. Open Settings → General → About.
  3. Install any carrier update offered.
  4. Turn Wi-Fi Calling off and back on.
  5. Test again.

Step 20: Replace an Old or Faulty SIM

An ageing or damaged physical SIM can cause registration and calling problems.

Consider replacing it when:

  • Calls fail on both Wi-Fi and cellular.
  • The phone intermittently displays No Service.
  • The SIM is several years old.
  • It was cut or modified.
  • It moves loosely in the tray.
  • The problem follows the SIM to another phone.

Ask the provider for a replacement SIM or correctly provisioned eSIM.

Do not discard the old SIM until the new one is active and the phone number works.

Step 21: Check for iPhone Hardware Problems

The iPhone may need inspection when:

  • Wi-Fi disconnects on every network.
  • Bluetooth also behaves abnormally.
  • Cellular reception is consistently worse than comparable phones.
  • Calls fail with multiple SIMs.
  • The problem began after a hard drop.
  • The enclosure or antenna area is damaged.
  • Liquid exposure occurred.
  • The phone frequently shows No Service.
  • Network resets and software updates make no difference.

Possible hardware areas include:

  • Wi-Fi antenna
  • Cellular antenna
  • Modem components
  • SIM reader
  • Logic-board connections

A phone can still browse the web while experiencing intermittent radio problems severe enough to affect live calls.

How to Tell Whether the Carrier Is Responsible

The carrier is the likely cause when:

  • Several phones on the same carrier are affected.
  • Wi-Fi Calling fails across multiple Wi-Fi networks.
  • The issue began after a SIM, eSIM or tariff change.
  • Another carrier works normally in the same iPhone.
  • The feature never registers despite correct settings.
  • Handover fails despite strong mobile coverage.
  • The carrier confirms an outage.
  • Re-provisioning resolves the problem.
  • Calls show errors in the carrier’s network systems.

How to Tell Whether the Wi-Fi Network Is Responsible

The Wi-Fi or broadband is the likely cause when:

  • Wi-Fi Calling works elsewhere.
  • Calls fail in specific rooms.
  • The problem occurs while moving between mesh nodes.
  • Heavy uploads make calls worse.
  • Staying close to the router fixes it.
  • Other real-time services also stutter.
  • The broadband connection briefly drops.
  • Replacing or repositioning the router helps.

How to Tell Whether the iPhone Is Responsible

The iPhone is the likely cause when:

  • Other phones work on the same carrier and Wi-Fi.
  • Different SIMs fail in the same iPhone.
  • Wi-Fi itself disconnects frequently.
  • The problem started after impact or liquid exposure.
  • Resetting network settings helps only temporarily.
  • The iPhone has unusually poor mobile reception.
  • Both Wi-Fi and cellular calls are affected.
  • Hardware diagnostics identify a radio issue.

Common Wi-Fi Calling Symptoms

Calls Drop When Walking Out of the House

The Wi-Fi connection ends, but the phone cannot complete the handover to the cellular network.

Check:

  • 4G or VoLTE service
  • Outdoor mobile coverage
  • Carrier handover support
  • Wi-Fi coverage near the doorway
  • Carrier provisioning

This is often a carrier-and-coverage issue rather than a defective router.

Calls Drop While Walking Between Rooms

Suspect:

  • Weak Wi-Fi coverage
  • Mesh roaming
  • Interference
  • An access-point boundary
  • A badly positioned router

Test while stationary beside the main router.

The Other Person Cannot Hear You

This can be caused by upstream packet loss or upload congestion.

Pause:

  • Cloud backups
  • Security-camera uploads
  • File synchronisation
  • Video meetings
  • Large uploads

Also test the microphone using Voice Memos. If recordings are unclear, the issue may be the iPhone microphone rather than Wi-Fi Calling.

You Can Hear Them, but They Cannot Hear You

This strongly suggests an upload-path issue, microphone problem or one-way network failure.

Test:

  1. Voice Memos
  2. A FaceTime Audio call
  3. A normal cellular call
  4. Wi-Fi Calling on another network

Calls Go Straight to Voicemail

Check:

  • Wi-Fi Calling registration
  • Focus modes
  • Call Forwarding
  • Silence Unknown Callers
  • Blocked contacts
  • Carrier outages
  • Whether the iPhone has internet access while locked

Apple recommends reviewing Focus, blocked numbers, Call Forwarding and Silence Unknown Callers when calls are not received. 

Wi-Fi Calling Disappears Randomly

The carrier may decide that cellular coverage is currently sufficient, or the Wi-Fi Calling registration may be dropping.

Check:

  • Wi-Fi stability
  • Carrier settings
  • SIM provisioning
  • Router restarts
  • Whether it disappears only in one location

Wi-Fi Calling Works but Audio Is Robotic

Robotic sound, delay and missing words usually indicate:

  • Jitter
  • Packet loss
  • Network congestion
  • Weak Wi-Fi
  • Poor mesh backhaul
  • Broadband instability

Headline broadband speed is less important than consistency.

Public Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Calling

Public Wi-Fi may not support reliable Wi-Fi Calling.

Possible issues include:

  • Browser-based login pages
  • Session timeouts
  • Restricted firewall rules
  • Heavy congestion
  • Client isolation
  • Short connection leases
  • Poor access-point placement

EE notes that public Wi-Fi may require repeated sign-in and that heavy use or low bandwidth can reduce call quality. 

Do not rely on public Wi-Fi Calling for critical business or emergency communications.

Emergency Calls and Wi-Fi Calling

Emergency calls usually use cellular service when it is available.

When cellular service is unavailable and Wi-Fi Calling is enabled, an emergency call may use Wi-Fi. Location information or the address registered with the carrier may be used to assist emergency services. Apple warns that Wi-Fi-connected iPhones may not receive some emergency alerts. 

Keep the registered emergency address accurate.

Do not assume that a Wi-Fi call provides the same location accuracy as a normal mobile emergency call.

A Systematic Diagnostic Order

Use this sequence:

  1. Confirm that the Wi-Fi Calling indicator is visible.
  2. Check that Wi-Fi Calling is enabled for the correct line.
  3. Test in Airplane Mode with Wi-Fi manually enabled.
  4. Update carrier settings.
  5. Update iOS.
  6. Restart the iPhone.
  7. Restart the router where appropriate.
  8. Test while standing near the router.
  9. Pause heavy network activity.
  10. Test another Wi-Fi network.
  11. Test another phone on the same carrier.
  12. Test another SIM or account in the iPhone.
  13. Review mesh roaming and coverage.
  14. Forget and rejoin the Wi-Fi network.
  15. Temporarily disconnect VPN or filtering services.
  16. Check VoLTE or 4G Calling.
  17. Review Dual SIM settings.
  18. Toggle Airplane Mode.
  19. Reset Network Settings.
  20. Contact the carrier about outages and provisioning.
  21. Arrange iPhone hardware diagnostics if the fault remains.

Avoid These Common Mistakes

Blaming the Router Because the Call Uses Wi-Fi

The carrier still controls authentication, call routing and handover.

Blaming the Carrier Without Testing Another Wi-Fi Network

A local access point or broadband fault can produce identical symptoms.

Resetting the Entire iPhone Too Early

Most Wi-Fi Calling problems do not require erasing the phone.

Assuming a Speed Test Proves the Network Is Fine

A fast test can still hide packet loss, jitter and brief outages.

Installing More Mesh Nodes Without Planning
