Why Are Your Laptop Fans Screaming? How to Quiet Them Safely
Your laptop sounds like it is preparing for take-off.
The fans surge while you are browsing the web, stay loud after you stop working, or spin at maximum speed from the moment Windows starts.
Sometimes that is completely normal.
Sometimes it points to:
a background process
blocked airflow
aggressive performance settings
a driver or BIOS problem
accumulated dust
a failing cooling fan
The important thing is not to force the fan to slow down.
The fan is usually trying to protect the hardware.
The correct question is:
Why is the laptop generating so much heat—or why can’t the cooling system remove it efficiently?
When Loud Fans Are Normal
A laptop may legitimately become noisy during:
gaming
video editing
Teams or Zoom calls
screen sharing
Windows updates
antivirus scans
cloud synchronisation
software installation
large Excel calculations
virtual machines
multiple external displays
Thin laptops in particular have limited cooling space, so their fans often ramp up quickly under short bursts of load.
Microsoft also notes that a newly configured device may spend substantial time installing updates and synchronising content in the background, causing temporarily higher fan activity.
A short burst of fan noise is therefore not automatically a problem.
Constant maximum fan speed while the laptop is basically idle deserves investigation.
Step 1: Check Task Manager
Press:
Ctrl + Shift + Esc
Open Task Manager.
Sort the Processes list by:
CPU
Then also look at:
GPU
Disk
Memory
Watch it for a minute or two.
You may find:
browser
Teams
OneDrive
Windows Update
antivirus
backup software
a failed application
virtual machine
using significant resources.
If CPU usage is high, the processor is generating heat.
The fan is responding correctly.
Don't Kill Random Windows Processes
If you see:
System
or another unfamiliar Windows process near the top, don't simply end it.
Identify what is actually happening first.
A background task may be:
installing updates
scanning files
indexing
processing a legitimate application workload
The aim is to remove unnecessary load, not break Windows to make the fan quieter.
Step 2: Check Browser Tabs
Modern browsers can use surprising amounts of CPU and GPU.
Common culprits include:
streaming video
animated websites
advertising
web applications
dashboards
video meetings
Chrome and Edge have their own browser Task Manager.
Press:
Shift + Esc
Look for an individual tab or extension consuming excessive resources.
Close it and watch Windows Task Manager.
If CPU usage falls and the fan becomes quiet a short time later, you have found the cause.
Step 3: Check Windows Update
Open:
Settings > Windows Update
Look for:
updates downloading
installation underway
restart required
recently installed drivers
Windows may remain busier than usual for a while after a major update while background maintenance completes.
Let legitimate servicing finish before deciding something is wrong.
If fan behaviour changed immediately after an update, note what changed.
That becomes useful evidence if a driver or firmware rollback is required.
Step 4: Check the Windows Power Mode
Open:
Settings > System > Power & battery
Find:
Power mode
For normal office use, I would generally start with:
Balanced
or the manufacturer-recommended equivalent.
Microsoft says using a higher-performance mode allows the device to run faster but can also make it warmer and cause the fan to spin faster.
If the laptop is sitting in:
Best performance
while you are only using Outlook and a browser, switching to Balanced may noticeably reduce:
processor boost
heat
fan noise
without making ordinary office work feel slower.
Don't Disable Turbo Boost as Your First Fix
You will find online guides recommending disabling processor boost or setting the maximum processor state to 99%.
That can reduce temperatures.
It can also reduce performance substantially.
I would not use this as the first response to a noisy laptop.
First establish whether the machine is:
performing unnecessary work
using an aggressive power profile
struggling with blocked airflow
Do not cripple the processor to disguise a cooling problem.
Step 5: Check the Manufacturer's Thermal Mode
Many business laptops have their own thermal-management settings.
Depending on the manufacturer, you may see modes such as:
Quiet
Optimised
Balanced
Cool
Performance
Ultra Performance
Dell, for example, recommends using its approved thermal-management software and states that BIOS and thermal-management components directly influence fan behaviour.
A laptop accidentally left in an aggressive performance profile can run louder than necessary.
For ordinary office work, choose the manufacturer's balanced or optimised profile.
Quiet Mode Doesn't Mean “Best”
Be careful with fan-control settings.
A quiet mode can achieve silence in two main ways:
1. Reduce system performance.
2. Allow components to operate closer to higher temperatures before increasing fan speed.
That may be perfectly appropriate for:
Word
web browsing
It may be unsuitable while:
rendering
gaming
compiling software
running long meetings
working in a hot environment
The objective should be:
safe temperatures with sensible noise
not:
fans must never be audible.
Step 6: Put the Laptop on a Hard Surface
This sounds trivial.
It isn't.
Laptop air intakes are commonly underneath the machine.
Using the computer on:
bed
sofa
blanket
cushion
clothing
can restrict airflow dramatically.
HP specifically warns that soft surfaces can block ventilation and cause overheating.
Use:
hard desk/table
and make sure none of the intake or exhaust vents are covered.
Then give the laptop a few minutes.
If fan speed drops substantially, the machine may simply have been starved of airflow.
Step 7: Check the Vents for Dust
Dust gradually collects around:
intake vents
exhaust vents
heatsink fins
fan blades
That reduces airflow.
The fan then has to spin faster to achieve the same amount of cooling.
HP recommends shutting the computer down, disconnecting power and using compressed air to remove dust from external ventilation openings.
Clean It Safely
Turn the laptop off.
Disconnect:
charger
dock
peripherals
Use short controlled bursts of appropriate compressed air around the vents.
Do not:
spray liquid cleaner inside
insert screwdrivers into vents
use household vacuum attachments aggressively
spin the fan violently with compressed air
If heavy dust is clearly packed inside the cooling system, professional internal cleaning may be more appropriate.
Step 8: Listen to the Type of Noise
Normal fan noise sounds like:
moving air
or a smooth increase in fan speed.
A physical fan problem may sound like:
grinding
scraping
rattling
ticking
bearing noise
If the fan sounds mechanically rough rather than merely loud, software optimisation is unlikely to solve it.
A fan bearing or fan assembly may need replacement.
HP specifically identifies growling/noisy fan behaviour as a potential fan fault rather than normal cooling activity.
Step 9: Check for Weak Airflow
This is another useful clue.
Suppose:
fan sounds extremely loud
but:
very little hot air exits the exhaust.
That can indicate:
blocked heatsink
heavy internal dust
damaged fan
obstructed airflow
Conversely:
loud fan + strong stream of warm air during heavy CPU load
can simply mean the cooling system is doing its job.
The noise itself isn't enough.
Look at:
load + heat + airflow + performance
together.
Step 10: Check BIOS and Firmware
The BIOS/UEFI often controls part of the laptop's thermal behaviour.
Dell notes that BIOS updates can include updated thermal tables governing fan speed and airflow, and currently recommends keeping the BIOS and thermal-management components current when diagnosing overheating or excessive fan activity.
Check the manufacturer's support page for:
BIOS
chipset
thermal-management drivers
graphics
firmware
Use updates intended for the exact laptop model.
Do not install BIOS files from third-party driver websites.
A BIOS Update Can Also Cause Fan Problems
The reverse can happen.
A firmware update may introduce a thermal-control problem.
Dell documented a recent example where particular BIOS versions caused overheating/fan issues on an affected laptop model.
So if:
fans were normal yesterday
BIOS updated
fans became abnormal immediately afterwards
check the manufacturer's support information for that model.
Do not assume newer firmware is incapable of introducing a regression.
Step 11: Check the Dock and External Displays
A laptop driving:
two 4K monitors
USB peripherals
Ethernet
webcam
through a dock can use more:
GPU power
CPU resources
USB bandwidth
and generate more heat.
Test:
docked
then:
undocked
If fan noise disappears without the dock, investigate:
graphics workload
dock firmware
external display configuration
charging/performance mode
The fan may be reacting to the increased workload rather than malfunctioning.
Step 12: Video Calls Are More Demanding Than They Look
A Teams meeting can involve:
video encoding
video decoding
background blur
microphone processing
noise suppression
screen sharing
encryption
So a laptop becoming noticeably louder during a call is not unusual.
If the system struggles, try:
disabling virtual backgrounds
closing unnecessary apps
reducing multiple simultaneous video streams
checking CPU usage
If the fan immediately calms down when the meeting ends, that strongly suggests workload rather than a cooling fault.
Step 13: Check Startup Apps
Open:
Task Manager > Startup apps
Disable unnecessary programs that do not need to launch every time you sign in.
Examples might include:
game launchers
unused chat applications
update assistants
media utilities
Do not disable:
security software
backup
encryption
RMM
business-management software
without understanding what it does.
Microsoft confirms that background applications can consume additional energy and system resources even when you are not actively using them.
Step 14: Consider Malware Only When There Is Evidence
Malware can cause continuous:
CPU usage
GPU usage
network activity
which can drive heat and fan speed.
But:
loud fan ≠ malware.
Look for supporting evidence such as:
unknown processes
browser redirects
pop-ups
security software disabled
unexplained network usage
Use the organisation's normal endpoint security platform.
Do not install three extra consumer antivirus tools because the fan is noisy.
What About Thermal Paste?
Thermal paste transfers heat between the CPU/GPU and cooling system.
Over time, some systems can develop:
degraded paste
poor heatsink contact
damaged thermal pads
But replacing thermal paste is not the first step.
Consider it when:
laptop is several years old
vents are clean
fan operates normally
CPU temperature climbs very quickly
processor throttles heavily under modest load
airflow is present but cooling remains poor
On many modern thin laptops, disassembly is more complicated than older internet guides imply.
If you're not comfortable servicing the hardware properly, have it inspected.
Don't Use Random Third-Party Fan-Control Utilities
Applications that manually force fan speeds can interfere with manufacturer thermal controls.
That creates two risks:
fan too fast
→ unnecessary noise and wear.
fan too slow
→ excessive temperature and throttling.
Use:
Windows power controls
approved manufacturer utilities
BIOS settings
before experimenting with third-party fan-control software.
Cooling Pads: Useful but Not a Repair
A laptop cooling pad can help when:
intake is underneath
machine experiences sustained load
ambient temperature is high
But it cannot repair:
failing fan
blocked internal heatsink
bad thermal contact
broken heat pipe
swollen battery
Treat it as an airflow accessory.
Not as a substitute for fixing a fault.
Warning Signs That Need Attention
Stop treating the issue as ordinary fan noise if you see:
unexpected shutdowns
severe throttling
burning smell
fan grinding
no airflow
casing becoming dangerously hot
battery swelling
graphical corruption
fan problem after physical impact or liquid damage
A swollen battery deserves particularly urgent attention.
Stop using and charging the device and arrange safe inspection/replacement.
Do not press the casing back down.
The Fastest Diagnostic Order
If your laptop fans are constantly loud:
1. Open Task Manager and check CPU/GPU load.
2. Close unnecessary heavy applications.
3. Check Windows Update.
4. Set Windows power mode to Balanced/Recommended.
5. Check the manufacturer's thermal profile.
6. Put the laptop on a hard, unobstructed surface.
7. Inspect and clean external vents.
8. Compare docked vs undocked behaviour.
9. Listen for grinding or mechanical fan noise.
10. Check BIOS, chipset and thermal-management updates.
11. Investigate hardware cooling only after the software and airflow checks.
The key principle is:
Do not try to silence the fan. Find out why the laptop needs so much cooling.
A Useful Example
Suppose the laptop is almost idle but the fans run continuously.
Task Manager shows:
Microsoft Edge — 35% CPU
You press:
Shift + Esc
inside Edge.
One browser tab containing a live dashboard is using nearly all of it.
Close that tab.
CPU drops to:
3%
A minute later, the laptop is quiet.
Nothing was wrong with:
fan
thermal paste
Windows
hardware
The fan was correctly responding to a workload you could not see.
