Replacing an ageing PC is sometimes the right decision.

But not always.

A computer that feels slow may still have several useful years left if the problem is something relatively simple such as insufficient RAM, an old mechanical hard drive, too many startup applications, overheating or a nearly full SSD.

The important difference in 2026 is that businesses need to consider more than performance.

Before spending money upgrading an older PC, you should first ask:

Can this computer still run a supported and secure operating system?

Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025, meaning standard Windows 10 installations no longer receive Microsoft's normal free security fixes or technical support. Microsoft recommends moving eligible PCs to Windows 11.

So before buying RAM, an SSD or a new graphics card, work out whether the computer is genuinely worth saving.

Here are the best ways to give an older PC new life in 2026.

1. Check Whether It Can Run Windows 11

This should now be your starting point.

A six-year-old PC may still perform perfectly well for basic office work, but if it cannot run a supported version of Windows, spending significant money upgrading it becomes harder to justify for business use.

Microsoft provides the PC Health Check application to help determine whether a Windows device meets the Windows 11 requirements.

Windows 11 has hardware requirements around the processor, TPM, Secure Boot, memory and storage. Microsoft also states that installing Windows 11 on devices that do not meet the minimum system requirements is unsupported and not recommended.

That means bypassing the compatibility checks might make an old computer technically boot Windows 11, but it isn't necessarily a sensible strategy for a business machine that needs to remain secure and supportable.

Before upgrading anything, establish:

Does the PC officially support Windows 11?

If the answer is no, replacement may be the better long-term decision.

2. Replace a Mechanical Hard Drive With an SSD

If the machine still runs Windows from a traditional mechanical hard drive, replacing it with a Solid-State Drive (SSD) can be one of the most dramatic upgrades you can make.

Hard drives use physical moving components to locate information.

SSDs don't.

The practical difference can be substantial.

Windows can start more quickly, applications can load faster and the entire machine can feel more responsive.

An SSD upgrade can make particular sense when:

The processor is still reasonably capable.

The PC supports Windows 11.

There is sufficient RAM.

The existing hard disk is the main performance bottleneck.


However, don't automatically upgrade a ten-year-old PC simply because an SSD will fit.

If the processor is obsolete, the machine cannot run Windows 11 and several other components are nearing the end of their life, the SSD may simply be delaying an inevitable replacement.

3. Increase the RAM

Modern office workloads can consume considerably more memory than older computers were originally supplied with.

A user might simultaneously have:

Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, OneDrive, several browser tabs and cloud-based business applications running throughout the day.

An older machine with 4GB or 8GB of RAM may struggle.

For many general business users in 2026, 16GB is a much more sensible target.

More demanding users working with large spreadsheets, virtual machines, development tools, image editing, CAD or similar applications may benefit from 32GB or more.

Before ordering memory, check:

Maximum RAM supported by the motherboard.

Number of available memory slots.

Memory type and speed.

Whether existing RAM is soldered to the motherboard.


Many thin laptops have memory that cannot be upgraded at all.

That is why it is worth checking the exact model before buying anything.

4. Find Out What Is Actually Making the PC Slow

Avoid upgrading hardware based purely on guesswork.

Open Task Manager with:

Ctrl + Shift + Esc

Then look at CPU, Memory, Disk and Network usage.

If memory is constantly at 95%, RAM may be the problem.

If the disk is continuously overloaded, storage could be the issue.

If the CPU is pinned at 100% by one application, upgrading the SSD probably won't solve it.

Performance problems can also be caused by:

A poorly behaving application.

Antivirus scans.

Windows Update.

Browser extensions.

Cloud synchronisation.

Malware.

Network problems.

Overheating.

Hardware failure.


Diagnose first.

Spend second.

5. Remove Unnecessary Startup Applications

Computers tend to accumulate software over time.

Every new application seems to want to launch automatically when Windows starts.

Eventually you can end up with Teams, Adobe utilities, printer applications, update managers, messaging tools and various vendor utilities all launching before you've even opened your first document.

In Windows 11 you can review startup applications through:

The objective is to remove unnecessary overhead, not disable important business services.

6. Remove Software You No Longer Use

Old software can continue consuming storage and running background components years after anybody last used it.

Review:

Settings > Apps > Installed apps

Look for software that is genuinely no longer needed.

That might include:

Old trial software.

Unused utilities.

Applications installed for former employees.

Old printer packages.

Browser extensions.

Outdated manufacturer tools.


Removing unnecessary applications can improve performance while also reducing the number of programs that need patching and maintaining.

In business environments, fewer unnecessary applications can also mean a smaller security attack surface.

7. Free Up Disk Space Properly

An almost-full system drive can contribute to performance and update problems.

But the answer isn't to install a questionable “PC cleaner” and start deleting random Registry entries.

Windows already provides appropriate storage-management tools.

Microsoft recommends Storage Sense, which can automatically remove temporary files and other unnecessary content.

Go to:

Settings > System > Storage

You can review where the space is being used and clean appropriate temporary content.

Do not delete business information simply to make the disk-space graph look prettier.

Important data should be stored and backed up appropriately.

8. Don't Waste Time Cleaning the Windows Registry

Older PC-maintenance advice often recommends cleaning the Windows Registry as part of a routine “tune-up”.

That is not where I would focus in 2026.

Modern performance troubleshooting should concentrate on measurable problems:

CPU usage, RAM pressure, disk performance, available storage, startup applications, updates, hardware health and malware.

Deleting arbitrary Registry entries can introduce new problems while providing little meaningful performance improvement.

If Windows itself is corrupted, Microsoft provides proper repair and recovery options.

Random Registry cleaning should not be your normal maintenance strategy.

9. Check Whether the PC Is Overheating

A computer can become slower as it gets hotter.

Modern processors protect themselves by reducing performance when temperatures become excessive.

This is known as thermal throttling.

Common warning signs include:

Fans constantly running loudly.

The computer becoming very hot.

Performance worsening after several minutes.

Random shutdowns.

Reduced performance during demanding workloads.


Dust, blocked vents, failing fans and dried thermal compound can all contribute.

For desktop computers, cleaning the cooling system and replacing a failing fan may be worthwhile.

Laptops need more care because they can be difficult to dismantle without damaging cables, clips or batteries.

If you're not confident, have the machine professionally inspected.

10. Consider a Better Monitor Instead of a New Computer

Not every productivity problem is caused by the PC itself.

An older computer may still be perfectly capable while the employee is struggling with a small, low-resolution monitor.

Adding a larger display — or a second monitor — can sometimes improve the working experience more than a minor processor upgrade.

The same applies to keyboards, mice, docking stations and webcams.

If the computer performs adequately but the workspace is unpleasant, replace the thing causing the problem rather than the entire machine.

11. Be Careful With Graphics Card Upgrades

For an office PC, a graphics-card upgrade is rarely the first place to spend money.

Most general business workloads do not need a powerful dedicated GPU.

A graphics upgrade makes more sense for specific workloads such as:

CAD.

3D modelling.

Video editing.

GPU-accelerated applications.


Even then, older computers may create other limitations.

You need to check:

Power supply capacity, physical case size, motherboard compatibility and whether the processor is powerful enough to justify the upgrade.

Putting an expensive modern GPU into an ageing PC can create an extremely unbalanced machine.

12. Check the Battery on Older Laptops

Sometimes an ageing laptop still performs well but has become frustrating because the battery lasts 30 minutes.

If the rest of the laptop is in good condition, replacing the battery can transform its usability.

However, consider the economics.

If the laptop also has:

A cracked chassis.

A poor screen.

When Should You Stop Upgrading and Buy a New PC?

This is ultimately the most important question.

Extending a computer's life is useful when a relatively inexpensive improvement solves the problem.

It becomes a false economy when you are repeatedly repairing outdated equipment.

Consider replacement if:

The PC cannot officially support Windows 11.

Hardware fails repeatedly.

The processor is significantly underpowered.

RAM cannot be upgraded sufficiently.

The battery, keyboard and screen all need replacing.

The computer regularly affects employee productivity.

Replacement parts are becoming difficult to source.

The machine requires excessive IT support.


Remember that Windows 10 support has already ended. A business should therefore be particularly cautious about investing money in hardware that cannot move to a supported operating system.

Think About the Cost of Lost Productivity

The purchase price isn't the only cost of a computer.

Suppose an employee loses ten minutes every day waiting for an ageing PC.

Over roughly 220 working days, that represents more than 36 hours of lost productivity per year.
