What You Need for Apple’s Built-In Method

Continuity Camera webcam support requires:

  • A compatible iPhone

  • Two-factor authentication enabled
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled

Apple lists iPhone XR and later as supporting the basic webcam feature, although individual effects may require newer models. 

The iPhone and Mac should normally be close together. Apple’s current Mac guidance describes keeping the iPhone within approximately 30 feet of the Mac when connecting wirelessly. 

Check That Continuity Camera Is Enabled

On the iPhone, open:

Settings → General → AirPlay & Continuity

Make sure:

is enabled.

The exact wording or path may vary slightly between iOS versions, but it should appear within the AirPlay and Continuity settings.

Also confirm that:

Centre Stage is useful when:

Enable it from the Mac’s video controls while the iPhone is selected.

Use background blur moderately. Excessive artificial blur can create rough edges around:

Depending on the Mac, iPhone, software version and application, you may have access to effects such as:

  • Reactions
  • Background changes
  • Centre Stage
  • Portrait
  • Studio Light
  • Desk View
  • Manual framing

These appear through the camera or video menu in the Mac menu bar while a supported application is using the camera.

Use reactions carefully in business meetings. Gesture-triggered effects can be surprising when activated unintentionally.

For formal calls, consider turning them off.

Improve the Camera Angle

The camera should ideally be close to eye level.

A camera positioned too low creates an upward view that may show:

The Picture Freezes or Disconnects

The Image Is Too Wide

Open Desk View and adjust its selection frame.

  • The iPhone is centred above the display.
  • The desk is directly in front of the Mac.
  • The phone is not mounted at an extreme angle.
  • Objects are within the selected area.

Desk View is computational rather than a physically overhead camera, so some perspective distortion is normal.

There Is No Sound

Check which microphone is selected in the application.
