Touchpad or Cursor Jumping Around While You Type
You are halfway through an email when the text suddenly appears in the wrong paragraph.
A sentence is overwritten, several words become highlighted or the mouse pointer moves across the screen even though you did not deliberately touch the touchpad. In more severe cases, windows open, applications minimise or the desktop changes while you are typing.
This is usually caused by one of three things:
- Your palm or thumb is activating the touchpad.
- The touchpad’s sensitivity or gesture settings are unsuitable.
- A driver, touchscreen or hardware problem is generating unintended input.
The quickest solution is not necessarily to replace the laptop or reinstall Windows. Begin by establishing which input device is responsible, then adjust one setting at a time.

Is the Mouse Pointer Moving or Is the Text Cursor Jumping?
People often use the word “cursor” to describe two different things.
Mouse pointer
This is the arrow that moves around the screen.
If it moves without your involvement, investigate:

- A touchscreen
- Remote-control software
- Drivers or hardware
Text cursor
This is the blinking insertion point inside a document, email or text box.
When it jumps to another paragraph, the most common explanation is an unintended touchpad click. Your palm touches the pad while typing, Windows interprets it as a tap and the text insertion point moves to wherever the pointer was resting.
You may then continue typing without noticing that the new text is appearing in the wrong place.
Text becomes highlighted or dragged
This often happens when the touchpad interprets accidental contact as:
- A double-tap and drag
- Click-and-drag
- Multi-select
- A two-finger or three-finger gesture
Identifying the exact behaviour helps determine which setting to adjust.
First: Prove Whether the Touchpad Is Responsible
Temporarily disable the touchpad and type for several minutes using an external mouse.

The touchpad, its configuration or its driver is almost certainly involved.

The jumping continues
Investigate:
- An external mouse

- Accessibility settings
- Application-specific software

This simple test prevents you from spending time changing touchpad settings when another input source is responsible.
Adjust Touchpad Sensitivity
Open:
Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad > Taps
Find:
Touchpad sensitivity
Depending on the laptop and driver, options may include:
- Most sensitive
- High sensitivity
- Medium sensitivity
- Low sensitivity
For a cursor that jumps while typing, try Medium sensitivity first. If accidental contact continues, test Low sensitivity.
Windows Precision Touchpads use Accidental Activation Prevention to suppress certain taps and movements for a short period after keyboard input. Microsoft’s hardware guidance states that increasing touchpad sensitivity reduces this suppression period, while the maximum sensitivity setting disables that protection entirely.
This means Most sensitive is normally the wrong setting when your palm is moving the cursor while you type.
Do Not Make It Too Restrictive Immediately
Very low sensitivity can create the opposite problem:
- The touchpad may hesitate after you type.
- Clicks may appear to be ignored.
- Games requiring simultaneous keyboard and touchpad input may become difficult.
- Rapid switching between typing and navigation may feel unresponsive.
Change one level at a time and test it during normal work.
Turn Off Tap-to-Click Temporarily
Physical clicking requires more deliberate pressure than lightly tapping the surface.
Under:
Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad > Taps
temporarily turn off:
- Tap with a single finger to single-click
- Tap twice and drag to multi-select
- Tap with two fingers to right-click
Microsoft’s Windows settings catalogue confirms that Windows can control single-finger tapping, two-finger right-clicking, double-tap dragging and touchpad sensitivity separately.
Continue using the lower physical part of the touchpad to click.
The problem stops
Accidental taps were probably moving the insertion point or selecting text.
You can either leave tap-to-click disabled or re-enable individual options until you identify the one producing the unwanted behaviour.
The pointer still moves but no longer clicks
Palm contact may still be moving the pointer, but disabling taps has prevented that movement from relocating the text cursor.
Reduce sensitivity further or investigate the touchpad driver.
Check Three-Finger and Four-Finger Gestures
An accidental multi-finger gesture can cause Windows to:
- Change desktops
- Open Search
- Display Task View
- Switch applications
- Minimise windows
- Adjust audio
Open:
Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad
Expand:
- Three-finger gestures

Temporarily set taps and swipes to Nothing where appropriate.

If disabling the gestures resolves the problem, re-enable only the actions you genuinely use.
Check Your Hand Position
Large modern touchpads often sit directly below the keyboard. The lower part of your palm or the base of your thumb can contact the surface while you type.
Watch your hands for a few minutes.
Look for:
- Your thumbs resting on the touchpad
- Your palm brushing one of its corners
- Sleeves touching the surface
- A watch strap or bracelet making contact
- Your hand pressing the pad while reaching for certain keys
Try:
- Raising your wrists slightly
- Moving the laptop farther back on the desk
- Using a separate keyboard
- Keeping both thumbs above the touchpad
- Turning off tap-to-click
- Reducing sensitivity
The problem may be more noticeable when typing quickly because the touchpad receives frequent accidental contact while processing genuine keyboard input.
Clean and Dry the Touchpad
Shut the laptop down before cleaning it.
Use a clean, dry microfibre cloth to remove:
- Skin oils
- Moisture
- Dust
- Food residue
- Cleaning-product residue
Do not spray liquid directly onto the laptop.
Moisture or residue can change how a capacitive touchpad detects contact. Also dry your hands before testing.
Check whether the problem appears mainly:
- After cleaning the laptop
- In humid conditions
- When your hands are damp
- After using hand cream
- While the laptop is particularly warm
Do not use excessive pressure on a touchpad that feels raised, distorted or difficult to click.
Disable the Touchpad When Using an External Mouse
Some Windows and manufacturer configurations provide an option to leave the touchpad enabled when a mouse is connected.
Open:
Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad
Look for an option similar to:
Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected
Turn it off if you normally use a USB or Bluetooth mouse.
This gives you normal mouse control while removing accidental touchpad contact from the equation. Microsoft introduced this as a Precision Touchpad control, although its visibility can vary by device and driver.
Some laptops also provide a keyboard shortcut to disable the touchpad. It may use an Fn key combination and a touchpad-shaped symbol.
Use the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact model rather than guessing at function-key combinations.
Reduce the Pointer Speed
A minor accidental movement becomes more disruptive when the pointer is configured to move rapidly.
Open:
Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad
Reduce Cursor speed slightly.
You can also review mouse speed under:
Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse
Windows provides separate pointer-speed controls within its mouse and touchpad settings.
This does not prevent accidental input, but it can reduce how far the pointer travels when your palm brushes the touchpad.
Check Whether the Problem Occurs in Every Application
Test typing in:
- Notepad
- Microsoft Word
- Outlook
- A browser text box
- Another simple application
It happens everywhere
The likely cause is system-wide:
- Touchpad

It happens only in one application
Investigate that application’s:
- Add-ins
- Extensions
- Autocomplete tools
- Grammar software
- Text-expansion software
- Macros
- Input settings

For example, a browser extension or Word add-in may alter selections or keyboard focus even when the physical input devices are functioning correctly.
Try the affected application in its safe mode, without extensions or with a clean profile where supported.
Restart Windows
Select:
Start > Power > Restart
Do not only close the laptop lid or use Shut down.
A proper restart reloads:

Microsoft advises updating or reinstalling the touchpad driver when the device behaves incorrectly. Depending on the laptop, the touchpad may appear in Device Manager under Human Interface Devices or Mice and other pointing devices.
Right-click Start and select:

Do Not Disable Random HID Devices
A laptop may list several devices with generic names.
Disabling the wrong one can affect:

Record the device name and current status before changing it.
Install the Laptop Manufacturer’s Driver
If Windows Update does not help, visit the official support service for the exact laptop model.

A higher driver version from an unrelated laptop model is not necessarily compatible with your device.
Roll Back a Recent Driver

A failing mouse can generate unintended pointer movement or clicks.

Test using only the laptop touchpad.
For a wireless mouse:

The responsible device may have:

The problem continues with everything disconnected
Focus on the integrated touchpad, touchscreen or laptop hardware.
Check for Touchscreen “Ghost Touches”
On a touchscreen laptop, unintended screen input can move the pointer or activate controls even when the touchpad is disabled.
A useful test is to disable the touchscreen temporarily.
Right-click Start and select:
Device Manager
Expand:
Human Interface Devices
Right-click:
HID-compliant touch screen
Select:
Disable device
Microsoft documents disabling and re-enabling the touchscreen through this Device Manager entry. If several HID-compliant touchscreen entries exist, each may need to be tested.
Type and work normally for a while.
The jumping stops
The touchscreen—not the touchpad—is generating the unwanted input.
Possible causes include:
- A damaged display
- Moisture or contamination
- Screen-protector problems
- Driver or firmware issues
- Pressure on the display
- Hardware failure
Re-enable the touchscreen afterwards and investigate it separately.
The jumping continues
Re-enable the touchscreen and continue with the next checks.
Do not uninstall touchscreen drivers casually on devices with model-specific recovery requirements.
Check Mouse Keys
Windows can move the pointer using the numeric keypad when Mouse Keys is enabled.
Open:
Settings > Accessibility > Mouse
Check whether Mouse keys is turned on.
Microsoft describes Mouse Keys as an accessibility feature that controls the pointer through the keyboard’s numeric keypad.
This is unlikely to cause movement during normal letter typing, but it is worth checking when the pointer appears to respond to number-pad input.
Check for Remote-Control Software
Unintended pointer movement can also come from another user or management service controlling the computer remotely.
Review whether the device uses:
- Remote support
- Remote Desktop
- Screen-sharing software
- Endpoint-management tools
- Manufacturer support utilities
On a business computer, some remote tools may be approved and centrally managed.
Do not remove legitimate security or support agents without checking with IT.
Escalate the problem if:

- Applications open as though another person is controlling them.

Perform a Clean Boot
Third-party utilities can modify touchpad, mouse and keyboard behaviour.
A clean boot starts Windows with Microsoft services and a restricted set of startup software, helping determine whether a background application is interfering. Microsoft warns that functionality may be temporarily limited and recommends restoring normal startup after testing.
Press:
Windows key + R
Enter:
msconfig
Then:
- Open the Services tab.
- Select Hide all Microsoft services.
- Select Disable all.
- Select Apply.
- Open the Startup tab.
- Select Open Task Manager.
- Disable enabled startup entries.
- Restart the laptop.
- Test typing.
Always select Hide all Microsoft services before disabling services.
The problem disappears
A third-party utility is probably involved.
Re-enable entries in groups until you identify the cause.

- Touchpad enhancement software

- Text expanders
- Remote-control software

The cause is more likely to be:

Return the computer to normal startup after testing.
Test Another User Account
Create or use another Windows user profile and type for long enough to reproduce the problem.
It affects only one account
Investigate profile-specific:

The issue is more likely to be system-wide or hardware-related.
Do not rebuild the original profile until you have confirmed that the second account remains stable under the same workload.
