Text on a new laptop or monitor should look crisp, but Windows 11 can sometimes make menus, applications and browser content appear slightly fuzzy, stretched or out of focus.

You may notice that:

  • Text looks blurred across the entire screen.
  • Windows looks sharp, but one older application is fuzzy.
  • An application becomes blurry when moved to another monitor.
  • Text looks wrong after connecting or disconnecting a docking station.
  • A laptop display looks sharp while the external monitor does not.
  • Windows becomes blurry after changing the Scale setting.
  • Icons and photographs look soft as well as text.
  • Office applications appear at the wrong size on one display.

These symptoms do not all have the same cause.

The problem may involve the monitor’s resolution, Windows display scaling, ClearType configuration, an application that does not properly support high-DPI displays or a mixed-monitor setup using different scaling percentages.

The correct fix depends on identifying which part of the screen is affected.

First, Work Out What Is Blurry

Before changing several display settings at once, compare different parts of Windows.

Check:

  • The Windows Settings application
  • File Explorer
  • The Start menu
  • A web browser
  • Microsoft Word or Outlook
  • The application where the problem is most noticeable
  • Text on each connected monitor

There are three common patterns.

Everything on one display looks blurry

When text, icons, photographs and application windows all look soft, check the display resolution and physical connection first.

The monitor may be running below its native resolution, or Windows may have selected an unsuitable display mode.

Only one application looks blurry

When Windows itself is sharp but one application is fuzzy, the application may not fully support high-DPI scaling.

Windows can enlarge an older application so that its interface remains readable. However, if Windows scales the application after it has already been drawn, the result can resemble an enlarged bitmap and appear blurry.

The application becomes blurry on a second monitor

This commonly happens in a mixed-DPI setup.

For example, a laptop may use:

Display 1: 2880 × 1800 at 200% scale

Display 2: 1920 × 1080 at 100% scale

An application that only understands the scaling level used when it started may look sharp on one display and blurred after being dragged to the other.

Microsoft explains that system-DPI-aware desktop applications may render crisply at one scale factor but become blurry when the DPI changes. Applications designed with per-monitor DPI awareness can respond more effectively when they move between displays.

Fix One: Use the Monitor’s Recommended Resolution

Open:

Settings > System > Display

When several monitors are connected, select the display you want to adjust.

Under Scale & layout, find:

Display resolution

Select the option marked:

Recommended

Microsoft advises using the recommended resolution because it normally matches the display’s native pixel arrangement. Running a monitor at a lower resolution can make text less sharp, stretch the picture or place black borders around it.

For example, if a monitor’s native resolution is:

2560 × 1440

do not reduce it to:

1920 × 1080

merely to make everything appear larger.

Use Windows scaling to increase the size of text and applications while keeping the screen at its native resolution.

Check Every Monitor Separately

Windows stores resolution and scaling settings for each display.

Select each numbered display at the top of the Display settings page and confirm that each one is using its recommended resolution.

A laptop screen may be configured correctly while the external monitor is not.

Select Identify if you are unsure which number belongs to each physical screen.

Avoid Duplicating Displays with Different Native Resolutions

When Windows is set to duplicate the same picture across two displays with different resolutions, it may have to use a mode that both screens support.

This can prevent one display from using its ideal native resolution.

Press:

Windows key + P

and test:

Extend

Extending the desktop allows Windows to configure the displays more independently.

Use Duplicate only when showing the same content on both screens is genuinely required.

Fix Two: Use the Recommended Windows Scale

On a high-resolution display, Windows enlarges text, buttons and application interfaces so that they remain readable.

Open:

Settings > System > Display

Select the affected monitor, then find:

Scale

Start with the percentage marked:

Recommended

Common values include:

  • 100%
  • 125%
  • 150%
  • 175%
  • 200%

Microsoft recommends starting with the scaling option marked as recommended for the selected display.

A high-resolution laptop may use 150% or 200%, while a normal desktop monitor may use 100% or 125%.

There is nothing inherently wrong with using different percentages on different monitors. The difficulty arises when an application does not adapt correctly as it moves between them.

Do Not Use a Lower Resolution to Make Things Bigger

Suppose a laptop’s recommended settings are:

Resolution: 2560 × 1600

Scale: 150%

Keep the 2560 × 1600 resolution and use 150% scaling.

Changing the resolution to 1920 × 1200 may make interface elements larger, but it can also make the entire picture softer because the monitor must scale the lower-resolution image across its physical pixels.

Be Careful with Custom Scaling

Windows allows custom scaling percentages, but they should not be the first troubleshooting step.

Standard values such as 100%, 125%, 150% and 200% are more widely tested. An unusual custom value may expose problems in older applications or make it harder to keep several monitors consistent.

Return to a recommended standard value before troubleshooting individual programs.

Restart Applications After Changing Scale

Some applications do not fully redraw themselves when the display scale changes.

After changing the percentage:

  1. Save your work.
  2. Close the affected application completely.
  3. Open it again.
  4. Move it between monitors and retest it.

If the display still looks wrong, sign out of Windows and sign back in.

Microsoft notes that some desktop applications can remain blurry after a scale-factor change until the user signs out and returns to Windows.

Fix Three: Increase Text Size Without Scaling Everything

Sometimes the display is sharp, but the text is simply too small.

Rather than increasing the Scale percentage—which enlarges applications, icons, buttons and windows—you can increase only the text size.

Open:

Settings > Accessibility > Text size

Move the slider until the sample text is comfortable to read, then select:

Apply

Microsoft distinguishes between the Text size control, which enlarges supported text, and Display scaling, which increases the size of text, applications and other interface elements.

This can be useful when:

  • The recommended resolution looks sharp.
  • Application windows are already a sensible size.
  • You mainly struggle to read menus and labels.
  • Increasing the overall Scale percentage makes the desktop feel cramped.

Not every older application will respond perfectly to the accessibility text-size control, but it is worth testing before changing the entire display scale.

Fix Four: Run the ClearType Text Tuner

ClearType is Microsoft’s text-rendering technology for improving the appearance of type on many LCD displays.

It uses the red, green and blue components within screen pixels to improve the perceived horizontal detail of text.

Windows normally configures ClearType automatically, but the selected samples may not be ideal for every monitor or viewing position.

Open the ClearType Text Tuner

Select Start and search for:

Adjust ClearType text

You can also press:

Windows key + R

and enter:

cttune.exe

Select OK.

Work Through the Samples

  1. Make sure Turn on ClearType is selected.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Confirm that the monitor is using its native resolution.
  4. Choose the clearest-looking text sample on each screen.
  5. Complete the tuner.
  6. Repeat the process for other monitors when prompted.

Do not choose the darkest sample automatically. Select the version whose letter edges look cleanest and most natural from your normal seating position.

What ClearType Can and Cannot Fix

ClearType may improve:

  • Thin or uneven-looking letters
  • Coloured fringes around text
  • Text that looks slightly rough
  • Poorly balanced font smoothing

ClearType will not normally repair:

  • A monitor running at the wrong resolution
  • Blurry photographs and icons
  • A low-quality video cable or adapter
  • An application being bitmap-scaled
  • Browser content enlarged from a low-resolution source
  • A physically damaged panel

If everything on the screen is soft, correct the resolution before spending time tuning ClearType.

Fix Five: Deal with Mixed-DPI Monitor Setups

A mixed-DPI setup combines screens with significantly different pixel densities or scaling requirements.

A common example is:

  • A 14-inch 4K laptop at 200%
  • A 24-inch 1080p monitor at 100%
  • A 27-inch 1440p monitor at 125%

Modern applications can respond when moved between these screens. Older programs may have been designed around a single system-wide DPI value.

Windows may enlarge those applications for compatibility, but the scaled result can appear blurred.

Restart the App on the Monitor Where You Will Use It

For an older application:

  1. Move it to the intended monitor.
  2. Close the application.
  3. Reopen it on that monitor.

Some programs detect the current DPI only when they start.

This is a useful temporary workaround when the application looks sharp on one display but blurred on another.

Sign Out After Docking or Undocking

Connecting or disconnecting a laptop from a dock can change:

  • The primary monitor
  • The active scale factor
  • Display resolution
  • Monitor arrangement
  • The DPI used when applications start

Microsoft specifically recommends signing out when Office applications become blurry after connecting or disconnecting a monitor, docking or undocking a laptop, or changing display scaling.

Save your work, then select:

Start > Account picture > Sign out

Sign back in and reopen the applications.

Experiment with Closer Scaling Percentages

You do not necessarily need identical scaling on every display.

However, an old application may behave more consistently if the monitors use closer percentages.

For example, changing a setup from:

Laptop: 200%

External monitor: 100%

to:

Laptop: 175%

External monitor: 125%

may reduce the size jump as the application moves between screens.

Only use values that remain comfortable and look correct on each display. Do not make text uncomfortably small solely to accommodate one outdated application.

Choose the Main Display Carefully

In Settings > System > Display:

  1. Select the screen where you use older applications most often.
  2. Expand Multiple displays.
  3. Select Make this my main display.

Some legacy applications behave best on the display Windows treats as the primary monitor.

After changing the main display, sign out and back in before retesting older software.

Fix Six: Correct One Blurry Application

When File Explorer, Settings and other applications look sharp but one program is fuzzy, do not change the entire computer merely to fix that one program.

Update the Application

Install the latest version from the developer or through Microsoft Store.

High-DPI support is primarily an application-development issue. Applications that are per-monitor DPI-aware can redraw their windows when the display DPI changes, while less-aware programs may depend on Windows compatibility scaling.

If the program is no longer maintained, the blur may be a limitation of the application rather than a fault in Windows.

Check the Application’s Own Interface Scale

Some applications include their own options for:

  • User-interface scaling
  • Font size
  • Zoom
  • High-DPI mode
  • Hardware acceleration
  • Retina or HiDPI support

Return browser and document zoom to 100% while testing. Page zoom can make website content appear larger, but it should not be confused with Windows display scaling.

Try the Windows High-DPI Compatibility Settings

For a traditional desktop application:

  1. Close the application.
  2. Right-click its shortcut or executable file.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Open the Compatibility tab.
  5. Select Change high DPI settings.
  6. Review High DPI scaling override.
  7. Test the available scaling behaviours one at a time.
  8. Select Apply, reopen the application and compare the result.

The available choices may include:

Application

The program is expected to perform its own scaling.

This may produce sharper text when the application is genuinely DPI-aware, but an old program may become extremely small or display incorrectly.

System

Windows scales the application based on the system DPI.

This may make the application readable, but bitmap stretching can cause blur.

System (Enhanced)

Windows attempts improved scaling for compatible traditional desktop applications.

It may improve some older programs but can distort or break others.

Microsoft’s technical documentation explains that system scaling can make applications appear blurry and that forcing applications into system-DPI compatibility modes may involve bitmap stretching.

There is no single option that is best for every program. Record the original setting and reverse the change if menus, text boxes or buttons become unusable.

These options may not be available for every Microsoft Store or modern Windows application.

Fix Seven: Check Microsoft 365 Display Settings

Supported Microsoft 365 applications include a multi-display setting intended to balance appearance and compatibility.

In applications where the option is available, open:

File > Options > General

Look for a section relating to multiple displays and select:

Optimize for best appearance

Microsoft describes this as the recommended mode for most users. It allows Office applications to adjust as screen conditions change so text and images remain sharp, although some older add-ins may experience rendering problems.

An alternative compatibility setting may help when an old Office add-in or integration behaves incorrectly, but compatibility scaling can make the application appear blurry.

Restart all Office applications after changing the option.

Fix Eight: Check Remote Desktop and Cloud PCs

A remote desktop may look blurry even when the local Windows desktop is sharp.

The image may be rendered on another computer and then scaled to fit:

  • The local monitor
  • The remote-session resolution
  • The Remote Desktop window
  • A full-screen multi-monitor layout

When using the Windows App for Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop or another supported remote connection, review the session’s Display settings.

Microsoft’s current Windows App documentation allows users to configure remote-session resolution and display use, including higher-resolution options for high-DPI screens.

Check:

  • Whether the session is full screen
  • The remote resolution
  • Whether all monitors are being used
  • The scaling configured inside the remote Windows session
  • Whether the session was connected before the monitors changed

Disconnect and reconnect after docking, undocking or changing the monitor arrangement.

Avoid changing the local computer to a non-native resolution merely to make one remote application clearer.

Fix Nine: Check the Monitor and Connection

When text, photographs and icons are all blurred on an external screen, investigate the display connection.

Check the Cable and Adapter

Try:

  • Reconnecting both ends of the cable
  • A different HDMI or DisplayPort cable
  • Connecting directly instead of through a dock
  • Another port on the computer
  • Another input on the monitor
  • Removing an inexpensive display adapter during testing

A docking station or adapter may limit the available resolution or refresh rate.

Confirm that Windows still shows the monitor’s recommended native resolution after reconnecting it.

Check the Monitor’s Own Menu

Open the monitor’s on-screen controls and review:

  • Sharpness
  • Picture mode
  • Aspect ratio
  • Overscan
  • Input label
  • Resolution information
  • Image enhancement settings

Excessive sharpness can create bright outlines around text, while very low sharpness can make the picture appear soft.

Resetting the monitor’s picture settings can be a useful test, but record any custom colour configuration first.

Avoid Analogue VGA Where Possible

Modern LCD monitors normally produce the clearest result through a digital connection such as DisplayPort, HDMI or USB-C.

An analogue VGA connection can be more sensitive to signal quality and automatic image adjustment.

Use a supported digital connection where the computer and monitor provide one.

Fix Ten: Refresh or Update the Graphics Driver

If the display suddenly became blurry after waking, docking or changing monitors, try refreshing the graphics driver with:

Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B

The screen may briefly flash or go black.

Microsoft includes this key sequence as a troubleshooting step for existing external-display problems.

You can also check:

Settings > Windows Update

Install available Windows, graphics and optional driver updates, then restart the computer.

If the issue began immediately after a graphics-driver update, check Device Manager for a rollback option or obtain the correct driver from the computer or graphics manufacturer.

Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities.

Is It Blurry or Simply Low Contrast?

Text can appear indistinct even when it is technically sharp.

Possible causes include:

  • Low screen brightness
  • Transparency effects
  • Poor contrast between text and background
  • An unsuitable colour profile
  • Night light or blue-light reduction
  • An aggressive monitor picture mode

Open:

Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects

Try switching Transparency effects off.

Microsoft recommends disabling transparency when elements such as the taskbar and Start menu are difficult to distinguish clearly.

You can also review:

Settings > Accessibility > Contrast themes

Do not use scaling changes to solve a contrast problem.

When the Problem May Be Hardware

A software or scaling issue normally produces a consistent pattern. A physical display fault may cause:

  • One side of the screen to be sharper than the other
  • Coloured shadows that remain in every application
  • Flickering or horizontal lines
  • A permanently out-of-focus area
  • Ghost images
  • Distortion visible before Windows starts
  • Blur that changes when the laptop lid moves
  • A monitor that cannot hold its native resolution

Test with:

  • A screenshot viewed on another device
  • A different external monitor
  • Another cable
  • Another computer connected to the same monitor

If a screenshot looks sharp on another device, the problem is likely to involve the display, cable, connection or scaling used on the original computer.

If the screenshot itself contains the blur in only one application, the issue is more likely to be software rendering.

Business and Managed Computers

Mixed-DPI problems are common in organisations that use:

  • Laptop screens with high pixel density
  • Standard office monitors
  • USB-C docking stations
  • Remote desktops
  • Legacy accounting or engineering software
  • Older browser-based business applications
  • Microsoft 365 add-ins
  • Shared hot-desk setups

Repeatedly changing settings on individual computers may not be the best long-term solution.

IT teams should standardise:

  • Monitor resolutions
  • Recommended scale factors
  • Docking-station firmware
  • Graphics drivers
  • Primary-display arrangements
  • Application versions
  • Remote-session settings

A legacy application that cannot operate clearly on modern high-DPI screens may need an update, replacement or controlled remote environment.

A Sensible Troubleshooting Order

When text looks blurry in Windows 11:

  1. Check whether everything is blurry or only one application.
  2. Set each monitor to its recommended native resolution.
  3. Select the recommended Scale percentage for each display.
  4. Avoid using a lower resolution merely to make things larger.
  5. Increase Accessibility text size when only the text is too small.
  6. Run the ClearType Text Tuner.
  7. Close and reopen applications after changing scaling.
  8. Sign out after docking, undocking or changing the main display.
  9. Test the application on each monitor.
  10. Update any application that remains blurry.
  11. Test its High-DPI compatibility options carefully.
  12. Select Optimize for best appearance in supported Office applications.
  13. Check remote-session display settings.
  14. Test another cable, port or monitor.
  15. Refresh and update the graphics driver.
  16. Contact IT support when the issue involves managed devices or legacy business software.
