Reducing Cable Clutter Behind the TV: A Cleaner, Safer Setup
A television setup can look perfectly tidy from the front while hiding chaos behind it.
You may have:
TV power
soundbar
games console
streaming box
HDMI cables
Ethernet
aerial or satellite
chargers
extension leads
network switches
all competing for the same small space.
Cable clutter is not just cosmetic.
A badly arranged setup can make equipment harder to maintain, strain connectors, obstruct ventilation and make faults much more difficult to diagnose.
The good news is that most setups can be improved without rebuilding the room.
The goal should be:
safe, tidy, ventilated and easy to understand.
Step 1: Photograph Everything Before You Unplug It
Before moving anything, take clear photographs of:
the rear of the TV
the extension lead
HDMI connections
soundbar connections
router or switch ports
any unusual adapters
Then power everything down.
This gives you a quick reference if you later forget whether:
HDMI 2 was the soundbar
or:
HDMI 3 was the console.
Step 2: Remove Cables You No Longer Use
This is usually the easiest win.
Look for:
old HDMI leads
unused aerial cables
redundant USB cables
power adapters for retired devices
old console leads
duplicate Ethernet cables
Remove them completely.
Do not leave obsolete cables hidden behind the furniture “just in case”.
Keep useful spares somewhere else in a labelled box.
Step 3: Plan the Routes Before Bundling Anything
Do not simply gather every cable into one enormous bundle.
Instead, think in groups.
Power
TV, console, soundbar, streaming devices and other mains-powered equipment.
Video/audio
HDMI, optical and similar connections.
Network
Ethernet.
Other low-voltage cables
USB, speaker cable, aerial and similar connections.
Smaller groups are easier to:
trace
alter
troubleshoot
replace
and they place less mechanical strain on connectors.
Step 4: Label Both Ends
This is one of the cheapest improvements you can make.
Use labels such as:
TV eARC
Xbox HDMI
Soundbar Power
Router Ethernet
TV Aerial
Label both ends.
Six months later, when something stops working, you should be able to identify a cable without pulling the entire installation apart.
Step 5: Use Reusable Velcro Straps
For most TV setups, reusable hook-and-loop straps are better than permanent zip ties.
They:
reopen easily
allow devices to be added
avoid excessive pressure on cables
make troubleshooting easier
If you do use zip ties, do not tighten them until they crush the cable insulation.
And cut the end cleanly so you do not leave sharp plastic edges behind the equipment.
Step 6: Use the Right Cable Length
One of the biggest sources of clutter is simply having too much cable.
If a console sits 30 cm below the TV, a five-metre HDMI cable usually creates an unnecessary coil.
Choose cables long enough to:
reach comfortably
accommodate bends
allow the device to move slightly
let you pull equipment forward for maintenance
but not dramatically longer.
Do not stretch cables tightly either.
A little slack is useful.
A three-metre tangled loop usually is not.
Step 7: Leave a Small Service Loop
For each major device, leave enough spare cable to move it.
For example, you should be able to pull a console or AV receiver forward without immediately disconnecting everything.
For TVs on articulated wall mounts, check the cables through the mount's full movement:
extend
tilt
rotate
return to the wall
Nothing should:
become tight
pinch
scrape
bend sharply
Step 8: Mount the Extension Lead Sensibly
Rather than leaving an extension block loose on the floor, consider mounting it:
behind the TV unit
beneath the furniture
inside a suitable open cable tray
Use its proper mounting slots or an appropriate bracket where possible.
Keep:
the switch accessible
plugs visible enough to inspect
ventilation around power adapters
Do not bury the extension lead beneath a pile of cables and power bricks.
Step 9: Never Daisy-Chain Extension Leads
Do not do this:
wall socket → extension lead → another extension lead → TV equipment
Electrical Safety First specifically advises using only one extension device per socket and warns against plugging one extension lead into another because the wall socket and extension can overheat.
If one extension block genuinely is not enough, the better long-term answer may be:
have more fixed sockets installed.
Step 10: Check the Load
Do not assume that because an extension lead has enough physical sockets, it can safely power anything plugged into them.
Check the manufacturer's current rating.
Electrical Safety First notes that many UK extension leads are rated at 13A, although some are rated lower, and warns that the combined connected load must remain within the product's rating.
For a typical TV, console, soundbar and streaming device, the total may be perfectly reasonable.
But do not add:
heaters
portable air conditioners
kettles
other high-power appliances
to the entertainment-system extension lead.
Step 11: Replace Anything Damaged
While reorganising, inspect:
plugs
cables
sockets
adapters
Stop using equipment showing:
burn marks
frayed insulation
exposed conductor
cracked plugs
excessive heat
buzzing or crackling
Electrical Safety First specifically advises taking these warning signs seriously rather than continuing to use the equipment.
Cable management should never become:
“hide the damaged cable so you can't see it.”
Step 12: Keep Power Bricks Ventilated
Power adapters generate heat.
Do not stack them tightly:
on top of AV receivers
behind hot consoles
inside tiny sealed boxes
Keep them on a ventilated surface with some space around them.
A cable-management box can be useful, but only if it has enough ventilation and is not packed tightly with hot power supplies.
Tidiness should not trap heat.
Step 13: Keep Equipment Vents Clear
Do not route cable bundles across ventilation openings on:
televisions
consoles
AV receivers
routers
network switches
streaming devices
A neat-looking setup that makes the electronics run hotter is not an improvement.
Leave space for hot air to escape.
This is particularly important around:
games consoles
amplifiers
receivers
which can generate significant heat.
Step 14: Use Trunking for Visible Wall Runs
For a wall-mounted TV, surface-mounted trunking is often the simplest clean solution.
It can route cables vertically from:
TV → cabinet
and can usually be painted to blend into the wall.
Benefits include:
neater appearance
protection from accidental pulling
easier future access
no need to cut large channels into the wall
Choose trunking large enough to fit the actual connectors.
Remember:
an HDMI plug is much wider than the cable itself.
Step 15: Treat Mains Power Differently From HDMI
Low-voltage signal cables and mains power should not simply be treated as interchangeable “wires”.
For a wall-mounted TV, the best permanent solution is often:
proper socket behind the TV
plus:
separate routing for HDMI/Ethernet/aerial cables.
Do not run an ordinary extension lead through the wall cavity simply because it makes the installation invisible.
If mains wiring needs to be:
moved
extended
concealed
added behind the TV
use a competent electrician.
Step 16: Use a Cable Tray Behind the Furniture
A cable tray can be extremely effective for keeping:
extension block
power supplies
excess cable
off the floor.
That provides several benefits:
easier cleaning
fewer tangled cables
less chance of cables being kicked
easier maintenance
Do not overcrowd it.
If the tray contains several warm adapters, leave enough space for air circulation.
Step 17: Use a Network Switch Where It Makes Sense
If your TV area contains:
TV
console
streaming box
AV receiver
that all benefit from Ethernet, you may not need four long network cables running back to the router.
Instead:
router → one Ethernet cable → small network switch
Then use short patch leads from the switch to the devices.
This can substantially reduce clutter.
Keep the switch:
ventilated
accessible
labelled
Step 18: Use HDMI Switching Carefully
An HDMI switch or AV receiver can reduce the number of cables travelling to the TV.
For example:
console + streaming box + Blu-ray → receiver → one HDMI cable → TV
But check that the switch or receiver supports the features you need.
For modern equipment that may include:
4K
HDR
Dolby Vision
120 Hz
VRR
eARC
HDCP
An old AV receiver can become the bottleneck in an otherwise modern TV setup.
So do not introduce an HDMI switch purely for tidiness if it removes features you actually use.
Step 19: Be Careful With Right-Angle Adapters
Right-angle HDMI and USB adapters can help behind a close-fitting wall-mounted TV.
But every extra adapter creates:
another connection
another possible failure
another point of mechanical strain
Where possible, use a properly designed right-angle cable instead of stacking several adapters together.
Step 20: Keep Streaming Devices Away From Heat
Streaming sticks are often hidden directly behind the television.
That is convenient, but the space can be:
hot
cramped
poor for Wi-Fi
If a streaming device:
overheats
keeps losing Wi-Fi
repeatedly restarts
try moving it slightly away from the rear of the television.
Use the manufacturer's short HDMI extension lead if supplied.
Children and Pets
Cable management can improve safety as well as appearance.
For young children:
remove dangling loops
secure the TV and furniture
keep extension blocks inaccessible
route visible cables through trunking
For pets:
keep cables off the floor where practical
replace chewed cables immediately
consider protective conduit or sleeves
Do not treat decorative cable wrapping as sufficient protection for a pet that regularly bites electrical leads.
A Simple TV Setup
For a TV, soundbar, console and streaming box, I would aim for something like:
Power
One suitable extension lead, securely positioned and within its rated load.
HDMI
soundbar → TV eARC
console → appropriate high-bandwidth TV input
streaming box → another TV input
Network
One Ethernet feed to a small switch if several devices use wired networking.
Organisation
power routed on one side
signal/network cables routed separately where practical
Velcro straps rather than tight permanent ties
everything labelled
sufficient slack for maintenance
vents kept clear
That is usually cleaner than trying to hide every cable in one enormous sleeve.
For a Wall-Mounted TV
A particularly clean setup is:
socket behind TV
TV mounted correctly
surface trunking or suitable low-voltage route
soundbar directly beneath
media equipment in the cabinet
cable tray behind the furniture
That can leave little or no visible cabling while keeping the installation maintainable.
What Not to Do
Avoid:
daisy-chaining extension leads
overloading extension blocks
routing ordinary extension leads inside walls
sealing hot power adapters inside unventilated boxes
blocking TV or console vents
overtightening cable ties
stretching HDMI cables tightly
using very long cables unnecessarily
stacking multiple HDMI adapters
hiding damaged cables
creating one enormous untraceable bundle
Electrical Safety First's guidance is particularly clear about avoiding overloaded sockets and daisy-chained extensions because both can create overheating and fire risks.
When to Call an Electrician
Use a competent electrician if you need:
a new socket behind the TV
an existing socket moved
fixed wiring modified
mains cables concealed

When to Call an AV or IT Professional
Professional help can also make sense when:
HDMI runs are unusually long
4K/120 Hz signals keep dropping
ARC/eARC behaves inconsistently

Before finishing, check:

2. Every remaining cable identifiable.
3. No damaged leads.
4. Extension lead within its rated load.
5. No daisy-chaining.
6. Power switch accessible.
7. Power adapters ventilated.
8. Equipment vents unobstructed.
9. Cables have enough slack.
10. No sharp bends.
11. Wall-mounted TV can move safely where applicable.
12. HDMI/eARC works.
13. Ethernet/network connectivity works.
14. Children and pets cannot easily pull the wiring.
15. Photographs taken of the completed connections.
The objective is not:
hide every wire at any cost.
It is:
make the installation cleaner without making it hotter, less safe or impossible to maintain.
