You switch on the computer and, instead of the Windows 11 sign-in screen, see a message such as:

  • No bootable device
  • Boot device not found
  • No bootable devices found
  • Default boot device missing or boot failed
  • Operating system not found
  • Insert boot media and press any key
  • Windows Boot Manager not found
  • Reboot and select proper boot device

The message is frightening because it can look as though Windows and all your files have disappeared.

Fortunately, that is not always what has happened.

A “No bootable device” message means the computer’s firmware could not find a valid route into an operating system. The files may still be present on the internal SSD or hard drive, but the computer cannot locate or start the Windows boot files.

Possible causes include:

  • The wrong boot device is selected
  • A USB drive is confusing the boot process
  • Windows Boot Manager has disappeared from the boot order
  • The computer has switched between UEFI and Legacy boot modes
  • The EFI System Partition is damaged
  • Windows boot files are missing
  • A storage-controller setting has changed
  • The SSD is loose or no longer detected
  • The storage drive is beginning to fail
  • A firmware update has changed the boot configuration
  • The wrong disk was selected after installing another drive
  • The drive has suffered physical or electrical damage

The most important rule is:

Do not format, initialise, reset or reinstall Windows until you have established whether the files are still recoverable.

A careless repair attempt can turn a straightforward boot problem into permanent data loss.

First: Do Not Make the Situation Worse

When the computer cannot find a bootable device, avoid doing any of the following without a verified backup:

  • Selecting Erase disk
  • Initialising the drive in Disk Management
  • Formatting an unknown partition
  • Deleting partitions
  • Converting the disk between GPT and MBR
  • Running third-party “boot repair” software from an unknown source
  • Reinstalling Windows over the existing installation
  • Using the manufacturer’s factory recovery option
  • Repeatedly running intensive disk-repair scans on a failing drive
  • Changing RAID, Intel RST, VMD or AHCI settings at random
  • Clearing the TPM
  • Resetting BitLocker
  • Creating new partitions in the existing free space

Do not assume that a partition is empty merely because Windows Recovery Environment has assigned it an unfamiliar drive letter.

Drive letters can change outside normal Windows. Your usual C: drive might appear as D:, E: or another letter during recovery.

Identify Whether the Files or Only the Boot Process Are Missing

There are two broad possibilities.

The drive is detected, but Windows cannot boot

This is often the more recoverable situation.

The SSD or hard drive appears in the computer’s BIOS or UEFI settings, but Windows Boot Manager is missing, damaged or incorrectly ordered.

Your Windows installation and personal files may still be intact.

Likely fixes include:

  • Correcting the boot order
  • Returning the computer to UEFI mode
  • Running Startup Repair
  • Recreating the Windows boot files
  • Repairing the EFI System Partition
  • Restoring a recently changed firmware setting

The drive is not detected at all

This is more likely to indicate:

  • A loose storage connection
  • A failed SSD or hard drive
  • A damaged motherboard connector
  • A storage-controller problem
  • A power-delivery fault
  • Liquid or impact damage
  • A failed external enclosure or adapter

Bootloader commands cannot repair a storage device the computer cannot see.

The priority becomes confirming the hardware condition and protecting the data.

Step One: Remove External Devices

Turn the computer off and disconnect non-essential devices, including:

  • USB flash drives
  • External hard drives
  • Memory cards
  • USB docks
  • Card readers
  • External SSDs
  • Phones
  • Cameras
  • Unnecessary USB hubs
  • Bootable installation media

Leave connected only:

  • Power
  • One monitor
  • Keyboard
  • Mouse

Turn the computer on again.

Some systems attempt to boot from removable media before the internal Windows drive. A connected USB device with an invalid or incomplete boot record can therefore produce a “No bootable device” message.

If Windows starts after removing a device, check the firmware boot order and the device that caused the interruption.

Step Two: Perform a Proper Power Reset

A temporary firmware or controller state can occasionally prevent an SSD from being detected.

For a desktop:

  1. Turn the computer off.
  2. Disconnect the mains cable.
  3. Disconnect external devices.
  4. Hold the power button for approximately 15 seconds.
  5. Reconnect power.
  6. Start the computer.

For a laptop:

  1. Turn the laptop off.
  2. Disconnect the charger.
  3. Disconnect external devices and docks.
  4. Hold the power button for approximately 15–30 seconds.
  5. Reconnect the approved charger.
  6. Start the laptop.

Some manufacturers provide a dedicated emergency-reset hole or internal-battery reset procedure. Use the official instructions for the exact model before pressing an unidentified recessed button.

Step Three: Check Whether the Drive Appears in BIOS or UEFI

Enter the computer’s firmware setup.

Common startup keys include:

F2

F10

F12

Delete

Esc

The correct key depends on the manufacturer.

Look for sections named:

  • Storage
  • System information
  • NVMe configuration
  • SATA information
  • Boot
  • Drives
  • Device information
  • Diagnostics

You are looking for the internal SSD or hard drive.

It may appear by:

  • Manufacturer
  • Model number
  • Storage capacity
  • NVMe slot
  • SATA port
  • Windows Boot Manager entry

The internal drive is listed

This suggests that the motherboard can still communicate with the storage device.

The problem may involve:

  • Boot order
  • UEFI settings
  • Windows Boot Manager
  • The EFI System Partition
  • Damaged Windows boot files

Continue with the boot-order and recovery steps.

The internal drive is not listed

Stop attempting Windows boot repairs.

Possible causes include:

  • The drive has become loose.
  • The drive has failed.
  • The motherboard slot has failed.
  • The storage-controller mode is incorrect.
  • The device has experienced impact or liquid damage.
  • A firmware fault is preventing detection.

On a serviceable desktop, an experienced technician can inspect SATA data and power cables or reseat an NVMe drive.

Modern laptops may require significant disassembly. Opening one without the correct procedure can damage:

  • The battery
  • Ribbon cables
  • Antennas
  • Cooling components
  • The motherboard
  • The storage device itself

If the files matter, arrange professional assessment before repeatedly powering on a potentially failing drive.

Step Four: Run the Manufacturer’s Storage Diagnostics

Many business laptops and desktops include preboot hardware diagnostics.

These may test:

  • SSD or hard-drive detection
  • Short drive self-tests
  • Extended drive health
  • Memory
  • Motherboard
  • Storage controllers
  • Power systems

Look for an option such as:

  • Diagnostics
  • Hardware Diagnostics
  • Storage Test
  • Drive Test
  • Preboot Assessment
  • System Test

Record any:

  • Failure ID
  • Validation code
  • Drive model
  • Service tag
  • Error number
  • QR code

The drive passes

A successful basic test makes a boot-configuration problem more likely, although it does not guarantee that every file is healthy.

Proceed cautiously with Windows recovery.

The drive fails

Stop running repeated tests.

An extended test can place additional stress on a deteriorating drive. The correct priority is normally to recover or clone the data before attempting repairs.

Do not reinstall Windows onto a drive that has failed a hardware diagnostic.

Step Five: Check the Boot Order

In BIOS or UEFI, open the Boot section.

For a normal modern Windows 11 installation, the preferred entry is usually:

Windows Boot Manager

Move Windows Boot Manager above:

  • USB storage
  • Network boot
  • PXE
  • Other internal disks
  • Removable media
  • Optical drives

Save the changes and restart.

The drive appears, but Windows Boot Manager does not

This can mean:

  • The firmware entry was removed.
  • The EFI System Partition is damaged.
  • The computer is in the wrong boot mode.
  • Windows boot files are missing.
  • The firmware lost its saved boot entries.

Do not format the disk.

Windows Boot Manager can often be recreated from Windows Recovery Environment while preserving the Windows installation and personal files.

Step Six: Confirm the Computer Is Using UEFI Mode

Most Windows 11 systems use:

  • UEFI firmware
  • GPT disk partitioning
  • An EFI System Partition
  • Windows Boot Manager
  • Secure Boot

If the computer switches to Legacy, CSM or BIOS compatibility mode, it may stop recognising a Windows installation created for UEFI.

Look for firmware options such as:

  • Boot Mode
  • UEFI/Legacy Boot
  • CSM
  • Legacy Support
  • OS Type

For a normal Windows 11 installation, the appropriate mode is generally:

UEFI

Do not change the mode repeatedly.

A Windows installation created in Legacy mode requires a different boot arrangement from one created in UEFI mode. If you are unsure how the system was originally configured, record the current settings and seek assistance.

Do not disable Secure Boot automatically

Secure Boot being enabled does not usually cause a standard Windows installation to disappear.

Turning it off can:

  • Reduce boot security
  • Change TPM measurements
  • Trigger BitLocker recovery
  • Violate business security policy

Change it only when you have identified a specific reason.

Step Seven: Do Not Change RAID, RST, VMD or AHCI Randomly

Many modern computers use storage-controller settings named:

  • RAID
  • RAID On
  • Intel Rapid Storage Technology
  • Intel RST
  • Intel VMD
  • AHCI
  • NVMe remapping

Windows is installed with drivers and configuration matching the selected controller mode.

Changing the mode without preparation can make a healthy Windows installation inaccessible and produce:

  • No bootable device
  • Inaccessible Boot Device
  • Automatic Repair loops
  • A blue-screen error
  • A drive that disappears from the installer

If the problem began after a BIOS reset, firmware update or CMOS battery failure, compare the controller setting with the manufacturer’s original configuration.

Do not assume that AHCI is always better or that RAID should always be disabled.

A business computer may also require its Intel RST or VMD configuration for:

  • Drive detection
  • Storage management
  • Encryption
  • Manufacturer recovery
  • Corporate deployment

Step Eight: Find the BitLocker Recovery Key Before Repairing Windows

Windows 11 devices may use:

  • BitLocker Drive Encryption
  • Device Encryption
  • Organisation-managed encryption

The drive can be fully intact while appearing unreadable from recovery tools because it is locked.

The BitLocker recovery key is a 48-digit number.

It may be stored in:

  • The owner’s Microsoft account
  • The organisation’s Microsoft Entra ID
  • Active Directory
  • A printed copy
  • A USB drive
  • A password manager
  • Company IT records
  • A saved text or PDF file

A personal computer’s key may be associated with the Microsoft account used when the device was first configured.

A business device’s key may be held by the employer or IT provider.

Do not:

  • Clear the TPM
  • Delete BitLocker protectors
  • Format the encrypted partition
  • Guess recovery keys repeatedly
  • Assume the data is gone because the partition looks locked

Make sure the key is available before changing firmware or attempting advanced recovery.

Step Nine: Enter Windows Recovery Environment

There are several ways to reach Windows Recovery Environment, or WinRE.

Automatic Recovery

When Windows begins loading but repeatedly fails, the computer may enter Automatic Repair after several interrupted starts.

Look for:

Then select:

Advanced options

Manufacturer Recovery Menu

Some computers provide a recovery option through the startup menu.

Avoid selecting factory recovery or erase options. You need the Windows troubleshooting tools, not a complete factory reset.

Windows 11 Installation USB

When the internal recovery environment cannot start, create official Windows 11 installation media on another computer.

Boot the affected PC from the USB in UEFI mode.

At the Windows Setup screen, do not select Install now.

Select:

Repair your computer

Then open:

Troubleshoot > Advanced options

This gives access to tools such as:

  • Startup Repair
  • Uninstall Updates
  • System Restore
  • Command Prompt
  • UEFI Firmware Settings
  • Startup Settings

Step Ten: Run Startup Repair

From Windows Recovery Environment, select:

Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair

Choose the Windows installation when prompted.

Startup Repair can attempt to correct problems involving:

  • Missing or damaged boot configuration
  • Certain boot files
  • Startup configuration
  • Some incompatible changes
  • Problems preventing Windows from loading normally

Allow it to complete, then restart the computer.

Startup Repair says it could not repair the PC

This does not automatically mean the files are lost.

It means the automated tool could not identify or correct the startup problem.

The next steps are:

  • Confirm the Windows partition still exists.
  • Check whether BitLocker is locking it.
  • Inspect the EFI System Partition.
  • Recreate the boot files manually.
  • Protect the files before attempting more invasive recovery.

Step Eleven: Identify the Windows and EFI Partitions

Open:

Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt

Enter:

diskpart

Then:

list disk

Confirm that the internal storage drive is listed.

Next run:

list volume

You are looking for:

The Windows volume

This is normally:

  • NTFS
  • Large compared with the other partitions
  • Large enough to contain Windows and user data

It may not be assigned C: in recovery.

The EFI System Partition

This is normally:

  • FAT32
  • Much smaller than the Windows volume
  • Often between approximately 100MB and several hundred megabytes
  • Marked as System on some displays
  • Without a normal drive letter

Recovery partitions

These are usually smaller and should not be formatted or deleted.

Exit DiskPart with:

exit

Find the Windows Drive Letter

Test possible drive letters carefully.

For example:

dir C:\Windows

If that path does not exist, try:

dir D:\Windows

dir E:\Windows

dir F:\Windows

The correct Windows volume should contain folders such as:

Windows

Users

Program Files

Program Files (x86)

Suppose the correct volume is D:.

Use D: in the recovery commands rather than assuming Windows is still C:.

Check Whether BitLocker Has Locked the Volume

Run:

manage-bde -status

Look for the Windows volume and its lock status.

If the volume is locked, unlock it using the correct 48-digit recovery password:

manage-bde -unlock D: -RecoveryPassword 111111-222222-333333-444444-555555-666666-777777-888888

Replace the example with the genuine recovery key.

Confirm access with:

dir D:\Users

Do not publish, email or photograph the recovery key unnecessarily. Treat it as sensitive security information.

Step Twelve: Recreate Windows Boot Files with BCDBoot

On a modern UEFI system, BCDBoot is usually more relevant than old Master Boot Record repair commands.

BCDBoot copies fresh Windows boot files from the installed Windows directory to the system partition and recreates the boot configuration.

First assign a temporary drive letter to the EFI System Partition.

Run:

diskpart

Then:

list volume

Select the small FAT32 EFI volume:

select volume 2

Replace 2 with the correct volume number.

Assign a temporary letter:

assign letter=S

Then exit:

exit

Assuming Windows is on D:, run:

bcdboot D:\Windows /s S: /f UEFI

A successful result should report that the boot files were created successfully.

Restart the computer and check whether Windows Boot Manager has returned.

Important precautions

Do not run the command until you have positively identified:

  • The Windows partition
  • The EFI System Partition
  • The correct firmware mode

Selecting or formatting the wrong partition can make recovery more difficult.

Do not format the EFI partition merely because BCDBoot initially fails. Establish why it failed first.

What About Bootrec?

You may encounter older instructions using:

bootrec /fixmbr

bootrec /fixboot

bootrec /scanos

bootrec /rebuildbcd

These commands can still be useful in particular recovery situations, but they are frequently presented without distinguishing between:

  • Legacy BIOS and MBR systems
  • Modern UEFI and GPT systems

On a modern UEFI Windows 11 computer, recreating the EFI boot files with BCDBoot is often the more relevant repair.

bootrec /fixmbr does not recreate missing UEFI files.

bootrec /fixboot may return an access-denied error on some UEFI configurations and should not be treated as the universal solution.

Do not copy an old BIOS repair sequence into a modern UEFI system without understanding the disk layout.

Step Thirteen: Protect the Files Before Further Repairs

When the Windows partition can be read, copy important files before attempting:

  • File-system repairs
  • Partition changes
  • A reset
  • Reinstallation
  • Firmware changes
  • Drive replacement

Connect a separate external drive with enough free space.

Use a simple folder copy or Robocopy.

For example, if Windows is on D: and the external drive is E:, you could create a destination:

mkdir E:\RecoveredFiles

Then copy important folders individually:

robocopy "D:\Users\Carl\Desktop" "E:\RecoveredFiles\Desktop" /E /XJ /R:1 /W:1

robocopy "D:\Users\Carl\Documents" "E:\RecoveredFiles\Documents" /E /XJ /R:1 /W:1

robocopy "D:\Users\Carl\Pictures" "E:\RecoveredFiles\Pictures" /E /XJ /R:1 /W:1

Replace the username and drive letters with the correct values.

Also consider:

  • Downloads containing irreplaceable files
  • Videos
  • Music
  • Local email archives
  • Business databases
  • Project folders
  • Browser exports
  • Application templates
  • Accounting data
  • Virtual machines
  • Files stored outside the user profile

Do not copy only shortcuts

Desktop shortcuts may point to files stored elsewhere.

Make sure the underlying data is included.

OneDrive files may be online-only

Files On-Demand can display placeholders in File Explorer even when the full file is stored only in the cloud.

Confirm the OneDrive account from another trusted device before assuming all visible files exist locally.

When Copying Files Produces Errors

Copy errors can indicate:

  • File-system corruption
  • Bad sectors
  • A failing SSD
  • A damaged USB destination
  • BitLocker access problems
  • Permission issues
  • Cloud-only files
  • Extremely long file paths

If the drive makes unusual noises, disappears during copying or reports increasing read errors, stop ordinary recovery attempts.

A specialist may need to create a sector-level image or clone before the drive becomes completely inaccessible.

Do not run repeated full scans on mechanically failing storage.

Step Fourteen: Check the File System Carefully

When the drive remains stable and the important files have been protected, you can check the Windows volume.

A basic read-only-style assessment can begin with:

chkdsk D:

To request repairs:

chkdsk D: /f

Use the correct Windows drive letter.

Do not start with an intensive surface scan

The /r option performs a much more intensive search for unreadable sectors.

On a physically failing hard drive, this can place the drive under prolonged stress.

When hardware failure is suspected, prioritise cloning or data recovery before intensive repair.

CHKDSK repairs file-system structures. It does not repair failed electronics, worn flash memory or damaged mechanical components.

Step Fifteen: Try Uninstalling a Recent Update

When the boot problem began immediately after an update, open:

Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates

You may be able to remove:

  • The latest quality update
  • The latest feature update

This is more relevant when Windows Boot Manager still works and Windows begins loading before failing.

It is less likely to fix a drive that the firmware cannot detect.

Step Sixteen: Try System Restore

If restore points are available, open:

Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore

System Restore can reverse certain changes involving:

  • Drivers
  • Registry configuration
  • System files
  • Application installations
  • Windows settings

It is not a backup of personal documents.

A successful System Restore should not normally remove ordinary documents, but recently installed applications and drivers may be affected.

Back up important files first whenever possible.

Step Seventeen: Check for a Damaged or Changed Storage Controller

A boot failure beginning immediately after firmware changes may involve:

  • Intel RST
  • VMD
  • RAID
  • AHCI
  • NVMe settings

Possible triggers include:

  • A BIOS update
  • Loading firmware defaults
  • A depleted CMOS or RTC battery
  • Motherboard replacement
  • Clearing CMOS
  • An attempted Linux installation
  • A technician changing storage mode

If the original mode is known, restore it.

Do not experiment blindly. Switching to the wrong mode can make Windows inaccessible even when the drive and files are healthy.

Step Eighteen: Check Whether Another Drive Changed the Boot Order

When a second SSD or hard disk has recently been installed, the computer may now be attempting to boot from the wrong disk.

Check:

  • Which drive contains Windows
  • Which disk contains the EFI System Partition
  • Which drive appears first in the firmware
  • Whether Windows Boot Manager identifies a particular disk
  • Whether removing the new drive allows Windows to start

A Windows installation can sometimes store boot files on a different physical disk from the main Windows partition.

Do not remove or format the “extra” disk until you have confirmed where the EFI boot files are located.

What If the SSD Is Detected Intermittently?

A drive that appears on one startup and disappears on the next may be experiencing:

  • Loose physical contact
  • Thermal problems
  • Controller failure
  • Failing NAND flash
  • Power-delivery issues
  • Motherboard-slot failure
  • Firmware problems

Intermittent detection is a serious warning.

Do not repeatedly restart the computer in the hope that it will temporarily return.

When it does appear, use the opportunity to protect the files rather than beginning a long update or repair process.

What If the Drive Has Failed?

A failed storage device does not always mean every file is unrecoverable.

The chances depend on:

  • Whether the drive is detected
  • Whether it is encrypted
  • The nature of the failure
  • Whether the controller has failed
  • Whether the storage has been overwritten
  • Whether repeated attempts have worsened the damage
  • Whether the recovery key is available

SSD failures

An SSD may:

  • Disappear without warning
  • Become read-only
  • Report the wrong capacity
  • Disconnect under load
  • Fail because of its controller
  • Suffer firmware corruption
  • Exhaust its flash memory

Unlike a mechanical drive, an SSD may fail without clicking or grinding noises.

Hard-drive failures

A mechanical drive may produce:

  • Clicking
  • Grinding
  • Repeated spin-up and spin-down
  • Very slow reading
  • Freezing
  • Bad-sector errors
  • Failure to initialise

Stop powering on a drive that makes abnormal mechanical noises.

Professional data recovery is more likely to succeed when the drive has not been opened, dropped again, repeatedly scanned or overwritten.

When Reset This PC Is Appropriate

Windows Recovery Environment may offer:

Reset this PC

The Keep my files option is designed to preserve personal files while reinstalling Windows, but it removes applications and resets many settings.

It is not a substitute for an independent backup.

A reset should be considered only when:

  • The storage drive is healthy.
  • The important files have been copied elsewhere.
  • Bootloader repair has failed.
  • Windows system damage is confirmed.
  • You accept that applications must be reinstalled.
  • BitLocker recovery information is available.

Do not choose Remove everything when the goal is to preserve files.

Do not reset Windows onto a drive that has failed diagnostics.

When a Clean Installation Is Appropriate

A clean installation can solve severe Windows and partitioning problems, but it can also erase the data.

It may be appropriate when:

  • The files have been backed up and verified.
  • The drive is healthy.
  • The Windows installation is beyond practical repair.
  • Malware has made the system untrustworthy.
  • A replacement SSD has been installed.
  • The partition structure must be rebuilt deliberately.

At the installation screen, deleting or formatting partitions can permanently remove recovery and user data.

Do not select partitions based only on their current drive letters.

When the Manufacturer’s Factory Recovery Should Be Avoided

Manufacturer recovery tools may restore the computer to its original factory state.

Depending on the option, this can:

  • Repartition the storage drive
  • Delete user files
  • Remove applications
  • Restore an older Windows build
  • Reinstall manufacturer software
  • Overwrite recoverable data

Read every warning carefully.

When the files have not yet been protected, do not start a factory recovery process.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Formatting the drive because Windows Setup cannot boot it

A damaged bootloader does not mean the Windows partition is empty.

Initialising the disk

Initialising changes disk metadata and can make recovery harder.

Changing every BIOS setting

Record the original configuration and change only the setting relevant to the diagnosis.

Deleting the EFI System Partition

It is small, but it contains essential boot files.

Assuming Windows must be on C:

Drive letters frequently change in recovery environments.

Running BCDBoot against the wrong Windows folder

Verify that the selected partition contains the genuine Windows installation.

Clearing the TPM

This can create encryption and authentication complications and does not repair boot files.

Using CHKDSK before protecting important data

File-system repair modifies the drive. Back up or clone first when the data is valuable.

Reinstalling Windows onto a failing SSD

The installation may fail or overwrite recoverable information.

Trusting one successful restart

An intermittently failing drive can briefly return before disappearing again.

Using an unknown boot-repair utility

Unverified recovery tools can modify partitions, install malware or overwrite boot records.

A Practical “No Bootable Device” Recovery Checklist

When Windows 11 reports no bootable device:

  1. Stop before formatting or reinstalling anything.
  2. Disconnect external drives and USB devices.
  3. Perform a power reset.
  4. Check whether the internal drive appears in BIOS or UEFI.
  5. Run the manufacturer’s storage diagnostics.
  6. Stop repeated testing if the drive fails or behaves intermittently.
  7. Check whether Windows Boot Manager appears.
  8. Put Windows Boot Manager first in the boot order.
  9. Confirm that the firmware is using the original UEFI mode.
  10. Do not change RAID, RST, VMD or AHCI without knowing the original setting.
  11. Find and verify the BitLocker recovery key.
  12. Enter Windows Recovery Environment.
  13. Run Startup Repair.
  14. Identify the Windows partition and EFI System Partition carefully.
  15. Unlock BitLocker when required.
  16. Use BCDBoot to recreate UEFI boot files where appropriate.
  17. Avoid old BIOS repair commands on a modern UEFI system.
  18. Copy important files to another physical drive.
  19. Check OneDrive and other cloud copies.
  20. Run file-system repair only after the data is protected.
  21. Try System Restore or uninstalling a recent update where relevant.
  22. Investigate firmware changes and recently installed storage.
  23. Replace a drive that fails hardware diagnostics.
  24. Reset or reinstall Windows only after the files are safe.
