You plug in your MacBook.

The charger is connected.

But the battery percentage does not rise.

Maybe macOS says:

Not Charging

or:

Charging On Hold

or perhaps nothing happens at all.

Before assuming the battery has failed, work through the problem in this order:

Is macOS intentionally pausing charging? → Is power actually reaching the Mac? → Is the charger/cable powerful enough? → Is the Mac too hot? → Is the battery unhealthy? → Is there a hardware fault?

That sequence avoids replacing perfectly good hardware unnecessarily.

Step 1: Check What macOS Actually Says

Open:

System Settings > Battery

Look at the battery status.

You may see:

Charging

Not Charging

Charging On Hold

Optimised Battery Charging

Charge to Full Now


If the battery has stopped somewhere around 80%, do not immediately assume the charger is broken.

Apple says macOS may deliberately delay charging past 80% to extend battery lifespan. A configured Charge Limit can also stop charging at a chosen level, while battery-health management may temporarily allow the battery to fall before charging resumes. (support.apple.com)

If you need a full charge now, click the battery menu and choose:

Charge to Full Now

where available.

Step 2: Is the Battery Actually Going Down While Plugged In?

This is a useful distinction.

Battery percentage stays roughly stable

The power adapter may be providing enough power to run the Mac, but macOS may be intentionally pausing charging.

Check:

Optimized Battery Charging

Charge Limit

temperature


Battery percentage continues falling

The adapter may not be delivering enough power for the current workload.

Apple specifically notes that demanding activities such as video editing or gaming can consume more power than a low-wattage source supplies, so the Mac can remain plugged in while the battery still drains. (support.apple.com)

Now check the power source.

Step 3: Check the Wall Socket First

Try the charger directly in another known-good socket.

Avoid:

questionable extension leads

damaged multiway adapters

loose wall sockets


Apple also recommends unplugging the power adapter from the wall for about 60 seconds and reconnecting it. If the adapter starts working again, Apple says electrical line noise may have caused its protection circuitry to shut down temporarily. (support.apple.com)

This is a simple test and worth doing before replacing anything.

Step 4: Inspect the Charger and Cable

Check for:

damaged insulation

exposed wiring

bent connectors

scorch marks

loose USB-C plugs

damaged MagSafe contacts


If any charging equipment is visibly damaged:

Do not keep flexing a frayed cable until it works.

If the second cable works immediately, you have isolated the fault.

Step 6: Check the Charger Wattage

This is one of the most important fixes.

A small USB-C phone charger may physically fit your MacBook.

That does not mean it is powerful enough.

Apple says a low-wattage power source may provide enough energy to operate the Mac but not enough to charge its battery. (support.apple.com)

For best results, use the adapter wattage Apple recommends for your Mac model.

That matters particularly with:

MacBook Pro

high-performance workloads

docks

external displays

Step 7: Bypass the Dock or Monitor

A very common modern setup is:

MacBook → USB-C dock/monitor → one-cable power

That is convenient.

But the dock or monitor may supply only:

45W

60W

65W


while the Mac may benefit from substantially more.

Disconnect the dock.

Connect the charger directly to the MacBook.

Charging begins normally

The MacBook is probably fine.

Investigate the:

dock power-delivery limit

monitor USB-C wattage

cable

dock firmware


This is especially important for high-performance MacBook Pro models.

Step 8: Try Another USB-C Port

On USB-C MacBooks, try charging through another supported charging port.

If:

left-side port fails

but:

right-side port works

that points towards:

damaged USB-C port

debris

local hardware fault


rather than the charger.

Step 9: Clean the Charging Port Carefully

Dust and debris can prevent proper contact.

Turn the Mac off and inspect the USB-C or MagSafe port.

scraping contacts

Step 10: Restart the Mac

For Apple silicon Macs:

Apple menu > Restart

Apple specifically says that on Apple silicon, a normal restart performs the relevant power-management reset; the old SMC-reset procedure does not apply. (support.apple.com)

That means many old internet guides telling every MacBook owner to:

“Reset the SMC”

are now outdated for Apple silicon.

What About Intel MacBooks?

Older Intel Macs can still use an SMC reset in appropriate cases.

The SMC controls areas including power management.

But the exact procedure varies by Intel Mac model.

Use Apple’s official instructions for that exact machine rather than one generic key combination copied from an old article.

For Apple silicon:

restart the Mac instead.

Step 11: Let the Mac Cool Down

Battery charging is temperature-sensitive.

Apple says Mac laptops work best in ambient temperatures around 10–35°C, and charging may pause around 80% if battery temperature becomes too high. (support.apple.com)

If the MacBook is:

in direct sunlight

running heavy workloads

sitting on a bed

inside a hot room


move it to a:

cool, hard, well-ventilated surface

and allow it to cool.

Do not put it in a refrigerator or freezer.

Step 12: Disconnect Power-Hungry Accessories

Disconnect:

external SSDs

hard drives

phones

tablets

USB hubs

external displays

docks


Then connect only the charger.

Apple specifically notes that connected accessories can increase overall power consumption and contribute to the battery draining faster than the source can replenish it. (support.apple.com)

If charging resumes, reconnect accessories one by one.

Step 13: Check Battery Health

Open:

System Settings > Battery

Check:

Battery Health

You may see:

Normal

The battery is operating normally.

Service Recommended

The battery may still work, but Apple recommends having it assessed because its ability to hold charge has deteriorated or another battery issue has been detected.

All rechargeable batteries lose capacity with age.

That is normal.

But a battery that:

will not charge at all

drains very rapidly

shuts down unexpectedly

reports Service Recommended


deserves further investigation.

Step 14: Update macOS

Open:

System Settings > General > Software Update

Apple specifically recommends installing relevant software and firmware updates because they can improve communication between the Mac and power adapter. (support.apple.com)

If the charging problem started immediately after a recent macOS update, that timing is useful information—but I would still work through the physical power checks first.

Step 15: MacBook Has Been Flat for a Long Time?

If the Mac has been stored with a depleted battery, do not expect instant startup.

Apple says a Mac recently removed from long-term storage may need around 20 minutes connected to its proper power adapter before it can be used. (support.apple.com)

Leave it connected to a known-good charger.

If there is still no response, continue with diagnostics.

Step 16: Run Apple Diagnostics

If:

charger is known-good

cable is known-good

power source is correct

macOS is not merely pausing charging

the Mac still refuses to charge


run:

Apple Diagnostics

Apple says Diagnostics can help identify hardware faults and provide reference codes for service. (support.apple.com)

Record any reference code.

That can help distinguish:

battery

logic board

sensor

power-system faults


When “Not Charging” Is Actually Normal

Here is the quick version.

Stops around 80%

Often:

Optimized Battery Charging / Charge Limit / temperature

Plugged in, battery steady

Possibly intentional battery management.

Plugged in, battery falling during heavy workload

Likely:

insufficient charger wattage or unusually high power draw

One USB-C port works, another does not

Possible port/hardware issue.

Another cable fixes it

Cable fault.

Another charger fixes it

Adapter fault.

Known-good charger and cable change nothing

Investigate the Mac itself.

A Useful Example

A MacBook Pro is plugged into a USB-C monitor.

macOS says:

Battery Not Charging

The Mac continues running but the battery slowly falls during video editing.

You connect Apple's recommended higher-wattage adapter directly.

The battery immediately starts charging.

Nothing is wrong with:

battery

macOS

USB-C charging system


The monitor simply was not supplying enough power for the workload.

That is why charger wattage needs to appear much earlier in the troubleshooting flow.

Another Example

A MacBook Air stops at:

80%

The charger works.

Battery Health says:

Normal

The Battery menu shows:

Charging On Hold

Selecting:

Charge to Full Now

takes it towards 100%.

That is normal battery-management behaviour, not a charging failure. (support.apple.com)

Warning Signs: Stop Using the Mac

Seek professional help promptly if you notice:

swollen battery

trackpad lifting

bottom case bulging

burning smell

liquid damage

scorch marks

excessively hot charger

physically damaged battery/charger


Do not continue charging a visibly swollen or damaged battery.

The Fast Troubleshooting Flow

If your MacBook will not charge:

1. Check what macOS says.


2. If it stops around 80%, check Optimized Charging or Charge Limit.


3. Test another wall socket.


4. Inspect charger and cable.


5. Test another known-good charging cable.


6. Confirm the adapter wattage is appropriate.


7. Bypass docks and monitors.


8. Try another charging port.


9. Clean the port carefully.


10. Restart the Mac.


11. Let an overheated Mac cool down.


12. Disconnect accessories.


13. Check Battery Health.


14. Update macOS.


15. Allow a deeply discharged Mac time to charge.

17. If a known-good power setup still fails, arrange hardware inspection.

Before replacing the battery, prove that the Mac is actually receiving enough clean power to charge it.
