You plug your laptop in.

Windows detects the charger, but the battery percentage does not increase.

Or perhaps:

nothing happens at all

it charges only when switched off

the percentage falls while plugged in

it stops charging at 60% or 80%

charging works only when the cable is held at an angle

Windows reports a slow charger

one USB-C port works while another does not


It is tempting to blame the battery immediately.

But a laptop charging problem can originate anywhere along this path:

wall socket → charger → cable → charging port → dock → firmware → battery → motherboard

The safest approach is to test that path in order rather than replacing components through guesswork.

First: Stop if There Are Signs of Physical Danger

Disconnect the charger and stop using the laptop if you notice:

battery swelling

touchpad or case lifting

smoke

burning smell

melted connector

sparking

extreme heat

badly damaged cable


Microsoft advises stopping use immediately if a lithium-ion battery has expanded beyond the device enclosure and avoiding pressure or puncture.

A swollen battery is not a software troubleshooting problem.

Arrange safe professional inspection.

What Does the Exact Symptom Tell You?

Different symptoms point towards different parts of the charging system.

No charging indication at all

Possible causes include:

failed charger

damaged cable

wrong USB-C port

damaged charging socket

dock failure

motherboard power-input fault


Plugged in, but battery not increasing

Check:

Smart charging

manufacturer battery limit

battery temperature

charger wattage

battery health

adapter recognition


Battery percentage falls while connected

This very often means the charger is supplying some power but not enough for the laptop's current workload.

Microsoft specifically says Windows PCs can charge slowly or continue discharging while plugged in when the charger or cable cannot provide the power the machine requires.

Laptop dies immediately when unplugged

Now the battery itself becomes much more suspicious.

Possible causes include:

failed battery

battery not detected

disconnected internal battery

battery-controller fault


Step 1: Test the Wall Socket

Start outside the laptop.

Try:

1. another known-working device in the socket


2. the laptop charger in another socket


3. temporarily bypassing extension leads or surge protectors

 

A failed extension lead can make a perfectly healthy laptop and charger appear faulty.

Keep this test simple before moving deeper.

Step 2: Inspect the Charger and Cable

Check the complete charging assembly.

Look for:

cuts

exposed wire

crushed sections

bent connectors

loose plugs

overheating

discolouration

damage where the cable enters the power brick


For USB-C laptops, the cable deserves particular attention.

A high-powered USB-C charger cannot necessarily deliver its maximum output through a cable that is rated for less power.

Microsoft explicitly notes that the PC, charger and cable all need to support the required power level for proper charging.

Step 3: Check Charger Wattage

This is one of the most common modern laptop-charging problems.

A USB-C phone charger may physically fit the laptop.

That does not mean it can power it correctly.

A laptop might require:

65 W

90 W

100 W

or substantially more.

If you connect a 20 W or 30 W charger, you may see:

Slow charger

Not charging

charging only while asleep/off

battery draining during use


Microsoft recommends using the charger and cable designed for the PC or hardware that meets the manufacturer's power requirements.

Check the laptop manufacturer's specification rather than relying only on the USB-C connector shape.

Step 4: Make Sure You Are Using a Charging-Capable USB-C Port

Not every USB-C port necessarily accepts power input.

One might support:

charging

USB4

Thunderbolt

display output


while another may support only:

data

display


Check the manual for the exact laptop.

Microsoft similarly recommends making sure the charger is connected to the USB-C port specifically intended for charging.

If one charging-capable port works and another does not, the problem may be local to that port.

Step 5: Bypass the Dock

If the laptop normally charges through:

USB-C dock

Thunderbolt dock

USB-C monitor


connect the charger directly to the laptop.

Charges correctly when direct

Investigate:

dock power supply

dock wattage

USB-C cable

dock firmware


Still does not charge

Move further into the laptop itself.

Microsoft specifically lists charging through an external hub or dock as a possible reason for USB-C charging problems.

Step 6: Inspect the Charging Port

Shut the laptop down and disconnect power.

Look carefully at the port.

Check for:

lint

dust

bent pins

corrosion

damaged USB-C tongue

loose socket

signs of liquid damage


A particularly useful symptom is:

charging changes when the plug moves.

That strongly suggests:

cable damage

connector damage

loose charging socket


Do not keep twisting the charger until it “catches”.

That can make a minor connector problem significantly worse.

Step 7: Is Smart Charging Limiting the Battery?

Suppose the battery stops consistently at:

60%

or:

80%

but everything else works.

That may be intentional.

Windows 11 supports manufacturer-controlled Smart charging, which deliberately limits maximum battery charge to reduce long-term lithium-ion wear.

Microsoft says that when Smart charging is active, the battery can remain below 100% even while plugged in, and Windows may display a heart over the battery icon.

Manufacturers use different names, including:

Smart charging

Conservation mode

Battery health mode

Primarily AC use

Custom charge threshold


Check:

Windows battery status

manufacturer utility

BIOS/UEFI


before ordering a battery.

Smart Charging Is Usually Worth Keeping

If the laptop spends most of its life on a desk plugged in, keeping the battery permanently at 100% can accelerate degradation.

Microsoft recommends moderate charge levels where practical and notes that keeping lithium-ion batteries around roughly 20–80% can help reduce long-term ageing.

So if the laptop stops intentionally at 80%:

that may be a feature, not a fault.

Disable the limit only when you genuinely need maximum runtime away from power.

Step 8: Generate a Windows Battery Report

Windows 11 has an excellent built-in diagnostic tool.

Open:

Terminal or Command Prompt as Administrator

Run:

powercfg /batteryreport

Windows creates an HTML report.

Microsoft specifically recommends this report for examining battery usage and estimated battery capacity.

Look for:

Design capacity

The capacity the battery was designed to hold when new.

Full charge capacity

How much Windows estimates it can hold now.

For example:

Design capacity: 60,000 mWh

Full charge capacity: 42,000 mWh

That suggests the battery now holds roughly 70% of its original capacity.

That is useful evidence of wear.

But remember:

battery wear does not prove the charger or port is healthy.

Step 9: Check the Charger in BIOS/UEFI

Many business laptops display adapter and battery information directly in firmware.

Restart the machine and enter BIOS/UEFI.

Look for information such as:

AC Adapter

Adapter wattage

Battery Health

Battery status

Power


This is particularly useful on Dell systems.

Dell currently says that if BIOS reports the AC adapter as Unknown or displays the wrong wattage, charging can fail or slow down. Likely causes include an incompatible/faulty charger or a charging-port connection problem.

BIOS identifies the charger correctly

Move towards:

battery health

smart charging

Windows

firmware


BIOS says Unknown / Not Installed

Focus on:

charger

cable

charging port

adapter-identification circuit


before blaming Windows.

Step 10: Update Firmware Carefully

Charging behaviour is partly controlled below Windows by:

BIOS/UEFI

embedded controller

USB-C Power Delivery firmware

Thunderbolt/dock firmware


An update can sometimes fix:

charger detection

USB-C compatibility

charging thresholds

dock power problems


But there is an important warning:

Do not start a BIOS update while the laptop has unreliable power.

A loss of power during firmware installation can make the machine unbootable.

Before updating firmware:

use the exact manufacturer's package

ensure reliable external power

confirm adequate battery charge where required

save your BitLocker recovery key


Step 11: Does It Charge While Switched Off?

This is an excellent isolation test.

Shut the laptop down completely.

Connect the charger.

Leave it for around 30 minutes.

Battery percentage increases

Possible causes include:

charger is underpowered during normal use

dock cannot supply enough power

Windows/driver issue

excessive system workload


Still does not charge

A Windows software fault becomes much less likely.

Focus on:

charger

port

battery

firmware-level detection

motherboard charging circuit


Step 12: Test a Known-Good Charger

This is often the most decisive test.

The test charger must have:

correct connector

correct voltage

suitable wattage

appropriate USB Power Delivery support

manufacturer compatibility where required


Do not use a random charger merely because the plug fits.

Known-good charger works

Replace the original charger/cable.

Known-good charger produces exactly the same fault

Now focus on:

port

battery

internal connector

charging circuit


When Is the Battery Probably Failing?

Battery replacement becomes more likely when:

laptop immediately dies when unplugged

battery is not detected consistently

battery report shows severe capacity loss

percentage jumps suddenly

manufacturer's diagnostic reports battery failure

battery is swollen

known-good charger is recognised normally


Lithium-ion battery ageing is normal.

Microsoft notes that capacity inevitably decreases with age and use.

When Is the Charging Port Probably Faulty?

Suspect the port when:

charging changes when the connector moves

charging works only at a particular angle

socket feels physically loose

multiple known-good chargers fail

one USB-C charging port works and another does not

charging LED flickers when the cable moves


Some charging sockets are replaceable separately.

Others are soldered to the motherboard.

Do not continue forcing the connector while waiting for it to fail completely.

When Might the Motherboard Be Responsible?

The internal charging circuit becomes more suspicious when:

charger tests correctly

battery tests correctly

port is physically sound

BIOS cannot identify known-good adapters

power repeatedly appears/disappears

liquid damage occurred

charging circuitry becomes unusually hot


Possible faults include:

USB-C Power Delivery controller

charging IC

power-input MOSFET

damaged board traces

corrosion


That requires proper hardware diagnosis.

The Best Troubleshooting Order

If a Windows laptop will not charge:

1. Stop if anything is swollen, burnt or dangerously hot.


2. Test another wall socket.


3. Inspect the charger and cable.


4. Confirm the charger provides the required wattage.


5. Verify the USB-C cable supports that power level.


6. Use the correct charging-capable port.


7. Bypass docks and monitors.


8. Inspect the charging socket.


9. Check whether Smart charging explains a 60–80% limit.


10. Generate powercfg /batteryreport.


11. Check charger and battery status in BIOS/UEFI.


12. Test charging while the laptop is switched off.


13. Test a known-good compatible charger.


14. Update BIOS/firmware only when stable power is available.


15. Replace the battery only when the evidence actually points to it.


16. Investigate the port or motherboard if multiple compatible chargers fail.

 

The key principle is:

prove the power is reaching the laptop correctly before replacing the battery.
