Your iPhone used to last most of the day.

Now it seems to lose battery every time you look at it.

Perhaps it drops:

100% → 70% before lunch

or loses a surprising amount overnight even though you barely touched it.

That does not automatically mean the battery is failing.

Fast battery drain can come from:

heavier-than-normal use

poor mobile signal

background activity

a recently installed iOS update

device setup or restore

one badly behaved application

high screen brightness

location use

an ageing battery


The important thing is to find out where the power is actually going before changing dozens of settings or replacing the battery.

The best troubleshooting order is:

Battery Usage → temporary background work → signal → display → apps → power modes → battery health

Step 1: Open Settings > Battery

This should now be your first stop.

On current iOS versions, go to:

Settings > Battery

Apple’s current Battery screen can show a Daily Usage chart comparing today’s consumption with your usage over the previous seven days. It also highlights the apps and system activities responsible for the biggest share of today’s battery use.

That gives you much better evidence than saying:

“My battery seems bad.”

Look for whether today’s usage is:

similar to normal

lower than normal

higher than normal


If iOS says today's usage is significantly higher, look immediately at the apps or system activities it identifies.

Step 2: Check Whether iOS Is Still Doing Background Work

This is particularly important after:

installing an iOS update

restoring from backup

setting up a new iPhone

migrating from an old iPhone


Apple says current iOS Battery Insights can show temporary activity such as:

Ongoing iOS Update

or:

Ongoing Device Setup

and notes that battery life should return to normal once those tasks complete.

This means a new or freshly updated iPhone can have poor battery life for a while without anything being wrong.

Background work may include:

indexing

photo analysis

iCloud synchronisation

app downloads

account synchronisation


If that is what Battery Insights reports, give it time to finish before dismantling your settings.

Step 3: Find the App Using the Battery

Under:

Settings > Battery

tap:

View All Battery Usage

You can inspect individual days and see which apps used the most power.

Pay attention to the difference between:

On Screen

You were actively using the app.

If YouTube used 35% of the battery because you watched videos for three hours, that is not necessarily a fault.

Background

The application consumed energy while it was not visibly on screen.

That deserves more attention.

Apple specifically calls out background activity as a potential reason for increased battery use.

Step 4: Compare Battery Percentage With Actual Usage

A percentage alone can be misleading.

Suppose:

Battery drops 30%

but you spent:

two hours navigating

an hour on a video call

45 minutes streaming video


That may be completely reasonable.

Now compare that with:

30% battery loss while the phone sat untouched on a desk.

That is much more interesting.

Always compare:

battery drain + screen time + background activity

rather than judging the percentage in isolation.

Step 5: Poor Mobile Signal Can Destroy Battery Life

This is one of the most overlooked causes.

If the iPhone is in a weak-signal area, it has to work harder to maintain or find a mobile connection.

Apple’s Battery screen can specifically identify:

No Mobile Coverage and Low Signal

as a cause of additional battery use.

Typical situations include:

basement offices

rural areas

trains

large warehouses

buildings with thick walls


If battery life is terrible:

at work

but:

normal at home

compare mobile signal conditions before blaming the battery.

Wi-Fi Can Be More Efficient Than Weak Mobile Data

Where reliable Wi-Fi is available, using it may reduce the effort required to maintain a poor cellular connection.

Apple specifically recommends leaving Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled under normal circumstances because their standby power use is designed to be minimal.

That means the old advice:

“Turn Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off whenever you're not using them to save loads of battery”

is not especially useful for modern iPhones.

Focus on what Battery Usage actually identifies.

Step 6: Check Screen Brightness

The display is one of the most significant power consumers on a smartphone.

Apple’s Battery suggestions can identify:

Auto-Brightness disabled

very high brightness

Auto-Lock disabled


and recommend changing them where they are contributing to excessive battery consumption.

Check:

Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness

and:

Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock

If your screen stays at maximum brightness all day, battery life will suffer.

Step 7: Check Auto-Lock

If Auto-Lock is set to:

Never

the display can remain active long after you stop using the phone.

Apple now surfaces this as a specific battery-saving suggestion where relevant.

A sensible automatic lock interval can reduce unnecessary screen-on time substantially.

Step 8: Check Location Usage

Navigation applications legitimately use:

GPS

display

mobile data


and can consume considerable power.

But other apps may also use location unnecessarily.

Open:

Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services

Review apps using:

Always

While Using

Never


Do not automatically disable location for everything.

Applications such as:

maps

Find My

transport

weather


may need it.

The objective is to remove unnecessary access rather than breaking useful features.

Step 9: Review Background App Refresh

Go to:

Settings > General > Background App Refresh

Applications can refresh information while they are not actively visible.

If one application appears prominently in Battery Usage with high Background activity and has no good reason to be constantly refreshing, restricting its background activity may help.

Low Power Mode already reduces Background App Refresh automatically.

Step 10: Notifications Can Contribute Too

Every notification can wake the phone and potentially activate:

screen

network

application processing


Apple’s Battery Usage view can identify Notifications as a type of app activity contributing to battery use.

If one noisy application sends:

150 notifications every day

ask whether you actually need them.

Go to:

Settings > Notifications

and disable unnecessary alerts.

Step 11: Try Low Power Mode

For an immediate battery-life improvement, use:

Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode

on current supported iPhones.

Low Power Mode reduces or disables several power-consuming activities, including:

Background App Refresh

automatic downloads

mail fetch

some visual effects

some display brightness

ProMotion refresh rate above 60Hz on supported displays


and pauses some iCloud Photos activity.

If battery life improves dramatically with Low Power Mode, that is useful evidence.

It does not automatically mean the battery itself is faulty.

Adaptive Power Is Newer and More Subtle

On supported iPhones running iOS 26 or later, Apple also provides:

Adaptive Power

This is different from Low Power Mode.

Adaptive Power monitors your recent usage pattern and can make small automatic adjustments on days when it predicts heavier battery consumption. Apple says it can:

make performance adjustments

slightly lower brightness

limit some background activity

automatically enable Low Power Mode at 20%


on supported models.

It is supported on models including:

iPhone 17 range

iPhone Air

iPhone 16 range

iPhone 15 Pro

iPhone 15 Pro Max.


For supported devices:

Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Adaptive Power

On iPhone 17 models and iPhone Air, Apple says it is enabled by default; on the supported iPhone 15 Pro and 16-series devices, it is off by default.

Step 12: Restart the iPhone

If one app or system service appears to be behaving unusually, restart the iPhone.

Then monitor:

Settings > Battery

over the next several hours.

A restart can clear a temporary software process.

But if the same app immediately returns to excessive background activity, investigate the app itself.

Step 13: Update iOS and Your Apps

Apple’s current battery troubleshooting begins by recommending that the iPhone is running the latest supported iOS release.

Also update applications through the App Store.

An app with a software bug can create:

excessive CPU use

repeated network activity

background drain


If battery drain started immediately after installing or updating one particular app, that timing matters.

Step 14: Check Battery Health

Eventually, batteries age.

Open:

iPhone 15 and later

Settings > Battery > Battery Health

iPhone 14 and earlier

Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging

Apple says Battery Health shows the battery's maximum capacity compared with when it was new. As the battery chemically ages, its capacity decreases and the phone may provide fewer hours between charges.

What Does Maximum Capacity Mean?

Suppose Battery Health reports:

Maximum Capacity: 84%

Broadly, the battery can now store less energy than when it was new.

That means even if your usage has not changed, the phone may not last as long.

Apple explains that reduced maximum capacity is a normal consequence of chemical ageing.

Do not obsess over a one-percentage-point change.

Battery health is an estimate and the useful question is whether the reduced capacity is now affecting how you use the phone.

When Does the Battery Need Replacing?

Apple may display:

Service

or a message indicating that battery health is significantly degraded.

Apple recommends considering battery replacement in that situation to restore capacity and performance.

That is stronger evidence than simply saying:

“My phone is two years old.”

A two-year-old battery may still be fine.

A heavily used younger battery may already be worn.

Battery Drain and Battery Health Are Different Questions

This distinction matters.

Battery health

How much capacity the battery can still store.

Battery drain

How quickly the phone is using the energy currently stored.

You can have:

healthy battery + rogue app draining it rapidly

or:

aged battery + perfectly normal software use

or both.

That is why Battery Usage should generally be checked before assuming Battery Health is the entire explanation.

Step 15: Check Whether the Phone Is Getting Hot

Heat can affect both battery consumption and long-term battery health.

Apple recommends using iPhone in moderate temperatures and warns that charging or using the device in ambient temperatures above 35°C can permanently reduce battery lifespan.

If the iPhone is consistently:

very warm while idle

hot overnight

hot with the screen off


check Battery Usage for an application or process keeping it active.

Repeated unexplained heat is an important clue.

Don't Force-Close Every App Constantly

A common battery-saving ritual is swiping every application away several times per day.

That is not a useful systematic troubleshooting method.

Instead:

1. Look at Battery Usage.


2. Identify an actual problem app.


3. Restart or update that app.


4. Restrict background activity if justified.


5. Remove/reinstall it if the problem persists.

 

Fix the application consuming energy rather than treating every app as guilty.

Don't Turn Off Every Useful Feature

You can make an iPhone last a very long time if you disable:

5G

Bluetooth

Wi-Fi

location

notifications

background activity

high refresh rate


and barely use it.

That misses the point.

A smartphone should remain useful.

Start with the biggest measured sources of drain and change only what is justified.

Overnight Battery Drain: What Is Reasonable?

Some overnight loss is normal because the iPhone may still perform:

network communication

notifications

background synchronisation

Find My activity


But if the battery loses a very large percentage while you are asleep:

1. Open Settings > Battery.


2. Select the overnight period.


3. Check which apps or system activities were active.


4. Check mobile signal.


5. Look for background activity.

 

The Battery graph is far more useful than guessing.

A Useful Example

Suppose your iPhone falls from:

100% at 08:00

to:

42% at 14:00

You assume the battery is failing.

Battery Usage shows:

Maps — 37%

with several hours of navigation and poor cellular coverage.

Battery Health says:

Normal.

The battery is probably not the main problem.

You simply had an unusually demanding day.

Another Example

The phone loses:

25% overnight

while untouched.

Battery Usage shows one social-media app with several hours of:

Background Activity

You update the app and disable unnecessary background refresh.

The next night it loses only:

5%.

That is exactly what systematic battery troubleshooting should achieve.

Charge Limit Does Not Cause Fast Drain

On iPhone 15 and later, Apple allows a maximum Charge Limit such as:

80%

to reduce battery wear.

If the phone starts the day at 80%, it will obviously reach lower percentages sooner than if it started at 100%.

That is not increased battery consumption.

It simply began with less stored energy.

Apple says the Charge Limit can be adjusted under:

Settings > Battery > Charging.

This is worth checking before somebody concludes:

“My battery only lasts until 5pm now.”

The Systematic Battery Check

If your iPhone battery is suddenly draining quickly:

1. Open Settings > Battery.


2. Compare today's usage with your recent pattern.


3. Check for Battery Insights such as ongoing update/setup.


4. Identify the top apps and system activities.


5. Look specifically for excessive Background Activity.


6. Check whether weak mobile signal is contributing.


7. Review brightness and Auto-Lock.


8. Review location access where justified.


9. Review unnecessary Background App Refresh.


10. Reduce excessive notifications.


11. Use Low Power Mode when appropriate.


12. Enable Adaptive Power on supported models if useful.


13. Restart and update iOS/apps.


14. Check Battery Health.


15. Investigate persistent heat.


16. Consider battery replacement if iOS reports Service/significant degradation.

 

The key principle is:

Measure what is using the battery before trying to save it.
