How to Speed Up Your Office Computers in 2026
A slow office computer is more than an irritation.
When employees spend every morning waiting for Windows to start, Outlook to open, Teams to respond or a browser tab to wake up, those delays quickly turn into lost working time.

to open Task Manager.
Look at:
CPU
Memory
Disk
Network

If CPU use is constantly high, you may have a demanding application, background process or insufficient processor performance.
If memory is constantly almost full, additional RAM may help.

2. Replace Old Hard Drives With SSDs
If an office computer is still running Windows from a traditional mechanical hard drive, replacing it with an SSD can be one of the biggest practical performance improvements available.
Mechanical HDDs rely on moving components. SSDs do not.

In 2026, an HDD may still make sense for certain high-capacity storage roles, but for an employee's primary operating-system drive, an SSD should generally be considered the normal starting point.
Before upgrading an old computer, however, check whether the rest of the machine is worth investing in.

5. Stop Everything Starting With the Computer
One of the easiest ways to slow down a perfectly good computer is allowing every installed application to launch automatically.

Spotify.
Adobe utilities.
Printer tools.

Device utilities.
Some startup applications are genuinely useful.

6. Remove Software Nobody Uses
New business computers often accumulate software remarkably quickly.
Manufacturers may ship utilities that employees never use.
Users install applications for one project and never remove them.

Then there are applications nobody can remember installing in the first place.
Not every installed application slows the computer significantly, but unnecessary software creates additional:
Background services.
Startup processes.

Outlook data has grown excessively.
Application logs are expanding.
A local backup is filling the disk.
The correct fix is identifying the cause.
8. Restart the Computer Occasionally
Yes, really.
A restart remains one of the simplest troubleshooting steps.
Employees sometimes keep laptops running for weeks, repeatedly closing the lid and putting them to sleep.
Applications accumulate.
Processes get stuck.
Updates may be waiting for a reboot.
Memory use grows.
Restarting gives Windows and applications a clean start.

9. Check Updates — Including Drivers and Firmware
Performance problems are not always caused by inadequate hardware.
