You buy an HDR monitor expecting richer colours, brighter highlights and better contrast.

You switch HDR on in Windows 11.

And somehow everything looks worse.

The desktop appears grey. Colours look faded. Whites seem dull. Blacks aren't particularly black.

Turn HDR off and suddenly the desktop looks vibrant again.

So is Windows HDR broken?

Usually, no.

There are several reasons HDR can look washed out, and one of the most important is that most of the Windows desktop is still SDR content being displayed while Windows is operating in HDR mode.

The good news is that Windows 11 gives you controls specifically for this.

Before changing graphics drivers or buying another cable, start with the basics.

Why Can HDR Look Washed Out?

HDR—High Dynamic Range—is designed to provide a wider range between dark and bright parts of an image, together with richer colour information.

Microsoft describes HDR as providing brighter highlights, deeper shadows and a wider range of colours than SDR.

But enabling HDR doesn't magically turn everything on your PC into HDR.

Much of what you use every day remains SDR:

  • Windows desktop
  • File Explorer
  • Microsoft 365 applications
  • websites
  • email
  • older games
  • many photographs
  • business applications

Windows therefore has to display that SDR material within an HDR environment.

That's why your desktop can look different even though an HDR film or game looks fantastic.

Fix 1: Adjust SDR Content Brightness

This should be your first adjustment if HDR games and videos look reasonable but the ordinary Windows desktop looks dull.

Open:

Settings > System > Display

Select your HDR monitor.

Choose:

HDR

Find:

SDR content brightness

On some built-in displays, Windows may use slightly different wording relating to HDR content brightness.

Move the slider gradually while looking at ordinary SDR content such as:

  • File Explorer
  • Outlook
  • browser
  • Word

Microsoft specifically recommends this adjustment when SDR applications appear too bright or too dark on an HDR-capable display.

Don't automatically push it to maximum.

You're looking for a balance where:

SDR content looks comfortable

while:

genuine HDR highlights still look noticeably brighter.

If ordinary white windows become painfully bright, you've probably gone too far.

Fix 2: Run Windows HDR Calibration

Windows 11 has an official:

Windows HDR Calibration

application.

 

It helps determine:

  • darkest visible detail
  • brightest visible detail
  • maximum display brightness
  • colour saturation

Microsoft recommends running the application full-screen on the HDR display you're calibrating.

If you have several monitors, make sure the calibration app is actually running on the HDR screen.

Don't Max Out Saturation

The calibration app also allows you to adjust colour saturation.

More isn't automatically better.

Microsoft warns that excessive saturation can make HDR content look unnatural.

If skin tones start looking radioactive, you've gone too far.

Fix 3: Check the Monitor's HDR Mode

Your monitor or TV has its own settings independent of Windows.

When it receives an HDR signal, it may switch automatically into an HDR picture mode.

Look for modes such as:

HDR Standard

HDR Cinema

HDR Game

DisplayHDR

Creator

Vivid

Start with the manufacturer's most neutral HDR mode.

Avoid assuming:

Vivid = better HDR.

Aggressive picture modes can:

  • oversaturate colours
  • crush shadow detail
  • clip highlights
  • alter colour temperature
  • apply excessive sharpening

The objective isn't necessarily to make HDR look like your monitor's extremely saturated SDR preset.

It is to make the image look correct.

Fix 4: Check Whether the Monitor Is Actually Good at HDR

This is an uncomfortable reality.

A monitor can:

support an HDR signal

without being particularly good at displaying HDR.

Those are not the same thing.

A convincing HDR display benefits from strong:

  • peak brightness
  • contrast
  • black levels
  • colour gamut
  • local dimming

A basic monitor may accept HDR10 perfectly happily but lack the brightness and contrast needed to make HDR look impressive.

So:

“HDR supported”

doesn't necessarily mean:

“excellent HDR display.”

If Windows is configured correctly but HDR still looks disappointing, the panel itself may simply have limited HDR capability.

Fix 5: Check Full vs Limited RGB

This is where I would start if the picture looks genuinely grey, particularly if blacks have become dark grey.

A mismatch between:

Full RGB

and:

Limited RGB

can destroy contrast.

For a conventional PC monitor, the normal arrangement is often:

RGB + Full range

But the graphics card and display need to agree.

If one expects Full while the other interprets Limited, blacks can become grey and whites can lose impact.

Check the appropriate graphics-control software for:

  • output colour format
  • dynamic range
  • pixel format

Depending on your GPU, this might be:

  • NVIDIA software
  • AMD Software
  • Intel Graphics software

Don't blindly force Full RGB when using a television.

TV input modes can behave differently.

The important thing is that:

PC output and display input match.

Fix 6: Check Resolution, Refresh Rate and Bit Depth

HDR requires more display bandwidth than basic SDR.

This becomes particularly important with configurations such as:

4K + 144 Hz + HDR

or:

4K + multiple monitors + dock

Open:

Settings > System > Display > Advanced display

Select the HDR monitor.

Check:

  • resolution
  • refresh rate
  • bit depth
  • colour format
  • colour space

Use the display's native resolution.

If HDR only behaves incorrectly at a very high refresh rate, temporarily lower the refresh rate and test again.

If the picture suddenly becomes correct, investigate the bandwidth of the:

GPU → port → cable → dock/adapter → monitor

rather than adjusting Windows colours endlessly.

Fix 7: Bypass the Dock

Laptop docks are particularly good at making display troubleshooting confusing.

A dock might support:

4K

but perhaps only:

  • at a particular refresh rate
  • on one output
  • without HDR
  • with one monitor
  • at reduced colour depth

Connect the HDR monitor directly to the laptop or PC as a test.

If HDR suddenly works correctly, you've learned something valuable.

The problem may be:

  • dock bandwidth
  • dock firmware
  • adapter
  • output limitation
  • shared display bandwidth

Don't replace the monitor until you've tested the direct connection.

Fix 8: Try Another Cable or Port

A cable can successfully display an image without necessarily supporting your preferred:

resolution + refresh rate + HDR mode

reliably.

Try:

  • another known-good cable
  • another HDMI port
  • DisplayPort instead of HDMI
  • direct USB-C/DisplayPort where supported
  • removing adapters
  • removing splitters

If reducing the refresh rate or bypassing an adapter fixes HDR, that points towards the display connection rather than Windows colour calibration.

Fix 9: Don't Duplicate HDR and SDR Displays

If you have two monitors and one supports HDR while the other doesn't, avoid:

Duplicate these displays

while troubleshooting.

Instead use:

Extend these displays

Windows then has greater freedom to handle the capabilities of each screen independently.

HDR settings are also display-specific, so always make sure you've selected the correct monitor under:

Settings > System > Display

before changing HDR options.

Fix 10: Check the Graphics Driver

Only after checking the obvious display settings would I start changing drivers.

If HDR worked correctly previously and suddenly became washed out after a graphics-driver update, consider rolling the driver back.

Otherwise check for an appropriate current driver from:

  1. Windows Update
  2. computer manufacturer
  3. graphics manufacturer where appropriate

Avoid generic driver-updater utilities.

Also restart Windows after significant graphics-driver changes before judging the HDR result.

HDR Video Looks Wrong but the Desktop Is Fine

That's a different problem.

Windows has specific controls for HDR video streaming.

Go to:

Settings > System > Display > HDR

and check:

HDR video streaming

Microsoft notes that HDR streaming also depends on the application, display capabilities and configuration.

If:

HDR games look good

Windows desktop looks good

but:

one streaming service looks wrong

don't immediately recalibrate the entire monitor.

Investigate:

  • streaming application
  • browser support
  • HDR video setting
  • content itself

What About Auto HDR?

Auto HDR is primarily a gaming feature.

It can enhance supported older SDR games by expanding their colour and brightness range when HDR is enabled.

Microsoft describes Auto HDR as a way of bringing HDR-like improvements to compatible SDR games.

It isn't the setting that fixes a washed-out Windows desktop.

So don't spend time toggling Auto HDR when File Explorer is what looks grey.

A Useful Diagnostic Test

Try three things:

Windows desktop looks washed out, but HDR game looks excellent

Start with:

SDR content brightness

and HDR calibration.

Everything—including genuine HDR content—looks grey

Investigate:

monitor HDR mode → calibration → RGB range → cable/connection → graphics configuration

HDR works directly from laptop but looks bad through dock

Investigate:

dock → bandwidth → firmware → cable → output configuration

This distinction prevents a lot of unnecessary troubleshooting.

The Best Troubleshooting Order

If HDR looks washed out in Windows 11:

  1. Confirm you're adjusting the correct display.
  2. Confirm HDR is enabled in Windows and on the monitor.
  3. Adjust SDR content brightness.
  4. Run Windows HDR Calibration.
  5. Select a neutral HDR monitor preset.
  6. Check Full/Limited RGB if blacks look grey.
  7. Check resolution, refresh rate and bit depth.
  8. Bypass docking stations and adapters.
  9. Test another cable or display input.
  10. Use Extend, rather than Duplicate, with mixed HDR/SDR displays.
  11. Check the graphics driver.
  12. Consider whether the monitor's HDR hardware is actually capable of producing good HDR.

The key principle is:

If only the Windows desktop looks wrong, don't troubleshoot the entire display chain before adjusting SDR brightness.
