Your computer starts making a noise you've never heard before.

Click. Click. Click.

Or perhaps it's grinding, scraping, buzzing or producing a strange beeping sound.

If that noise is coming from a mechanical hard drive, your first priority should not be running CHKDSK, restarting the PC repeatedly or downloading a disk-repair utility.

Your first priority is:

Protect the data.

Some hard-drive noises are normal. Others can indicate a developing mechanical failure where continued use increases the risk of permanent data loss.

The trick is knowing the difference—and not making a failing drive work harder than necessary.

First: Make Sure the Noise Is Actually the Hard Drive

Not every clicking or grinding noise inside a computer comes from storage.

Possible sources include:

  • cooling fan touching a cable
  • failing fan bearing
  • optical drive
  • power-supply fan
  • external hard drive
  • loose component
  • speaker producing a hardware warning beep

This is particularly important with modern computers containing SSDs.

An SSD has no moving mechanical parts, so it cannot physically produce the characteristic clicking or grinding of a mechanical hard disk.

If your computer only contains SSD storage, investigate another component or an attached external HDD.

What Different Hard-Drive Noises Can Mean

Mechanical hard drives aren't silent.

A healthy HDD may produce:

  • gentle whirring
  • normal seek noises
  • occasional soft clicks
  • brief sounds when starting or stopping

Western Digital specifically notes that healthy drives can produce occasional clicking and other operational sounds.

So:

one quiet click does not automatically mean imminent failure.

What matters is whether the sound is new, unusually loud, repetitive or accompanied by other problems.

Repeated Hard Clicking

A repeated, pronounced:

click → pause → click → pause → click

is much more concerning than an occasional soft seek noise.

Seagate identifies persistent hard clicking or repeated clunking as a possible sign of a physical drive problem.

If the drive is also:

  • disappearing
  • freezing
  • struggling to open files
  • taking unusually long to respond

treat it seriously.

Grinding or Scraping

This is the sound I would worry about most.

Grinding or scratching can indicate physical contact or damage inside the drive.

Seagate warns that continued operation of a grinding drive can cause further physical platter damage and make subsequent data recovery more difficult.

If important data exists only on that drive:

Shut the machine down.

Don't run a disk scan first.

Beeping

Hard drives don't normally contain speakers, so what sounds like beeping may actually come from another computer component.

Seagate notes that some apparent drive-related beeps may originate from the computer's internal speaker.

External drives can also behave strangely when they have:

  • insufficient USB power
  • faulty power supply
  • damaged USB cable
  • enclosure problems

If the drive isn't grinding or scraping and the data isn't irreplaceable, testing one known-good compatible cable or power source can be reasonable.

Do not repeatedly power-cycle a seriously failing drive.

Buzzing or Excessive Vibration

Some vibration is normal in a spinning HDD.

A new or substantially louder vibration can indicate:

  • poor mounting
  • enclosure resonance
  • motor/bearing problems
  • drive failure

Western Digital notes that vibration can sometimes result simply from how the drive is mounted, although it can also accompany failure.

The Most Important Question: Is the Data Backed Up?

This changes what you should do next.

Important data exists elsewhere

Excellent.

Shut down the suspect drive, replace it and restore from your verified backup.

There is little reason to take unnecessary risks trying to preserve a drive you already suspect is mechanically failing.

The drive contains the only copy

Be much more cautious.

If the drive is:

  • grinding
  • scraping
  • repeatedly hard-clicking
  • repeatedly disconnecting
  • no longer detected reliably

I would not recommend running diagnostic scans or attempting a complete DIY clone before deciding how valuable the data is.

Every additional read requires the failing mechanism to operate.

If the information is genuinely irreplaceable, professional recovery may offer the best chance of getting it back.

Should You Quickly Copy Your Files?

Sometimes.

If the drive merely sounds slightly different but:

  • remains stable
  • has no grinding/scraping
  • isn't disconnecting
  • reads normally

and the data isn't valuable enough to justify professional recovery, copying the most important files first may be reasonable.

Prioritise:

irreplaceable files → important files → replaceable data

rather than immediately trying to copy the entire drive.

But if the drive is grinding or repeatedly hard-clicking and contains critical data, continuing to read it can be the wrong decision.

Seagate's guidance similarly prioritises ensuring important data is backed up when abnormal noises appear.

Don't Run CHKDSK First

This is one of the most important points in the article.

CHKDSK is a filesystem tool.

It can detect and repair logical filesystem problems.

It cannot repair:

  • damaged heads
  • failing spindle motor
  • scratched platters
  • broken bearings

Running:

chkdsk C: /r

on a mechanically failing disk can generate substantial read activity.

That is exactly what you may not want when the priority is recovering the only copy of important data.

The safer principle is:

Data first → repair later.

If recovery is necessary, perform filesystem repairs on a recovered copy or image rather than experimenting on the only failing original wherever possible.

Don't Defragment It Either

Defragmentation deliberately performs extensive disk activity.

That is the opposite of what you want from a mechanically failing HDD.

If a hard drive is making abnormal mechanical noises:

Do not defragment it.

And don't install a “PC optimiser” that decides to do it for you.

SMART Is Useful—but Not Proof a Drive Is Healthy

SMART data can reveal warning indicators associated with drive health.

But this creates another common mistake:

“SMART says OK, therefore the clicking drive is fine.”

No.

SMART can provide useful evidence, but it cannot guarantee that a drive will not fail.

If the drive is making severe mechanical noises and your data is important, don't repeatedly stress it with extended diagnostic tests simply to obtain a reassuring green tick.

Once the data is safe, manufacturer diagnostics become much more appropriate.

Seagate, for example, recommends its SeaTools diagnostics after data has first been protected when abnormal drive behaviour is suspected.

Never Put a Hard Drive in the Freezer

This old internet trick needs to disappear.

Do not:

  • freeze the drive
  • hit it
  • shake it
  • tap it
  • repeatedly power-cycle it
  • open the sealed drive casing

Opening a hard drive outside an appropriate controlled environment can contaminate the platters and make professional recovery substantially more difficult.

If the data matters, experimentation is a poor trade.

External Hard Drive? Check the Simple Things Carefully

If an external HDD starts behaving strangely but isn't grinding, test the non-destructive possibilities first.

Check:

USB cable → USB port → correct power adapter → enclosure

Seagate specifically recommends checking cables and compatible power supplies when diagnosing unexpected drive sounds.

But there's an important limit.

If connecting the drive produces:

grind → click → disappear → reconnect → grind → click

stop.

Repeatedly reconnecting it isn't troubleshooting anymore.

Watch for Other Failure Symptoms

Noise becomes much more concerning when combined with:

  • extremely slow file access
  • Windows freezing
  • folders disappearing
  • corrupted files
  • I/O errors
  • drive repeatedly disconnecting
  • BIOS failing to detect it
  • SMART warnings
  • request to format a previously working disk

For example:

occasional quiet click + everything works normally

is very different from:

repeated loud clicking + Windows freezes whenever the drive is accessed.

Context matters.

What About an SSD?

An SSD can absolutely fail.

But it won't warn you with grinding heads or a failing spindle motor because those components don't exist.

SSD failure may instead appear as:

  • drive disappearing
  • read/write errors
  • corrupted data
  • extremely poor performance
  • SMART warnings
  • inability to boot

If a computer containing only SSD storage makes a grinding noise, look elsewhere.

When Should You Use Professional Data Recovery?

Consider professional recovery when:

  • grinding or scraping is present
  • hard clicking is continuous
  • the drive doesn't spin correctly
  • the computer no longer detects it
  • the drive suffered impact or liquid damage
  • critical files have no backup
  • business records exist only on the drive
  • losing the data would be more expensive than recovery

Professional recovery isn't guaranteed.

But the chances generally aren't improved by spending three days repeatedly restarting and scanning a mechanically damaged disk first.

Once the Data Is Safe, Replace the Drive

A hard drive that has developed credible mechanical failure symptoms should not go back into normal service simply because it started working again.

Replace it.

For a workstation still using a mechanical system drive, moving to an SSD also provides substantial benefits:

  • much faster startup
  • quicker applications
  • silent operation
  • lower latency
  • better resistance to movement

Don't reuse the suspect HDD as your new backup drive.

A failed primary drive doesn't become a trustworthy backup drive just because you formatted it.

Businesses Should Assume Drives Will Eventually Fail

Storage devices are replaceable.

Business data often isn't.

A sensible backup strategy should include:

  • automated backups
  • multiple copies
  • off-site or cloud protection
  • ransomware-resistant backup
  • monitoring of failed jobs
  • regular restore testing

The key word is restore.

A backup system isn't proven simply because a dashboard says:

Successful.

Businesses need to know that data can actually be restored when a drive fails.

The Quick Decision Guide

If a hard drive suddenly starts making unusual noises:

Occasional soft click, everything normal
→ Monitor it and make sure the backup is current.

New repeated clicking
→ Protect important data and investigate the drive.

Grinding or scraping
→ Shut it down, particularly if important data has no backup.

External drive beeping/buzzing without grinding
→ Carefully check the correct cable, port and power supply.

Critical data exists only on the failing drive
→ Consider professional recovery before running intensive diagnostics.

Data is already safely backed up
→ Replace the suspect drive rather than trusting it again.

And remember:

Do not run CHKDSK, defragmentation or aggressive repair utilities before protecting irreplaceable data.
