Fixing Slow Charging on Android Phones: Find the Cause Before Replacing the Battery
A phone that once charged quickly can gradually begin taking several hours to reach 100%. It may display Charging slowly, fail to activate fast charging or gain battery so slowly that normal use almost cancels out the power coming from the charger.
Slow charging does not automatically mean the battery is failing. The problem may be caused by the cable, power adapter, charging port, temperature, phone settings or the amount of power the device is consuming while connected.
The fastest way to fix it is to test each part of the charging process systematically.
First, Confirm That Charging Is Actually Slow
Charging speed naturally changes throughout a charging session.
Most modern Android phones charge fastest when the battery is relatively low. As the battery approaches full capacity, the phone deliberately reduces the charging rate to limit heat and battery wear.
It is therefore normal for:
- The first 50% to charge faster than the final 20%
- Charging to slow near 80% or 90%
- The estimated completion time to change
- Charging speed to reduce when the phone becomes warm
- A battery-protection feature to pause or limit charging
Test the phone from roughly 20% to 60% using a wall charger, with the screen off and the phone left unused. This provides a more useful comparison than measuring the final few percentage points.
Check What the Phone Says
Connect the charger and look at the Lock Screen or battery information.
Depending on the manufacturer, you may see:
- Charging
- Charging slowly
- Fast charging
- Rapidly charging
- Super fast charging
- Wireless charging
- Charging paused
- Connected, not charging
Samsung phones may show the charging type briefly when first connected. Pixel phones can display charging information on the Lock Screen or within Battery diagnostics on supported models.
The wording is useful, but it is not a precise measurement. Some phones stop displaying the fast-charging label after a few seconds even though charging continues normally.
1. Test a Different Charging Cable
The cable is one of the most common causes of slow charging.
A worn cable may still provide enough electricity for the charging symbol to appear while failing to carry the power needed for fast charging.
Common signs of a damaged or unsuitable cable include:
- Charging speed changes when the cable moves
- The plug feels loose
- The phone repeatedly connects and disconnects
- Fast charging works only in a particular position
- The cable becomes unusually warm
- The phone charges normally with another cable
Use a short, good-quality cable designed to support the charging standard required by your phone.
A USB-C connector does not guarantee fast charging. Different USB-C cables support different current levels, data capabilities and power-delivery standards.
Manufacturers including Google and Samsung recommend testing a known-working cable and charger when diagnosing charging problems.
2. Use a Compatible Power Adapter
A charger cannot deliver more power than it was designed to provide.
A small adapter from an older phone may charge a newer handset, but only slowly. Similarly, a laptop USB port, car socket or inexpensive multiport charger may not support the phone’s fastest charging mode.
Check:
- The adapter’s wattage
- Whether it supports USB Power Delivery
- Whether it supports PPS when required
- Whether the cable supports the same power level

3. Plug the Charger Directly Into a Wall Socket

During testing, avoid:

5. Stop Using the Phone While It Charges
Charging speed describes how quickly energy reaches the battery after the phone’s own power consumption has been taken into account.
Activities such as these can use substantial power:
- Gaming
- Video streaming
- Navigation
- Mobile hotspot use
- Video calling
- Camera recording
- Installing updates
- Cloud backup
- High screen brightness
A charger may be supplying power normally while an active application consumes much of it.
For an accurate test:
- Connect the phone to a wall charger.
- Turn off the screen.
- Stop gaming, navigation and streaming.
- Leave the phone untouched for 20 minutes.
- Compare the percentage increase.
Samsung advises allowing the phone to rest while charging because intensive use can increase consumption and heat, reducing the net charging rate.
6. Let the Phone Cool Down
Lithium-ion batteries cannot be charged at maximum speed under every temperature condition.
When the phone becomes too hot, the charging system deliberately reduces power to protect the battery and internal components. Charging may eventually pause entirely.

8. Check Whether Fast Charging Is Enabled
Some Android manufacturers provide a setting that can disable fast charging.
On a Samsung phone, the route may resemble:

Options can include:

Menu names vary between models and software versions.
Other manufacturers may place similar controls under:
- Battery

- More battery settings
- Charging preferences

Turn the relevant option on, reconnect the charger and check the charging status.
Not every Android phone provides a user-facing fast-charging switch.
9. Review Adaptive or Optimised Charging
Battery-protection systems may intentionally delay charging.
Depending on the phone, features may be called:

These features may:
- Hold the battery at 80%

This behaviour can look like a fault even though the device is working as designed.
Review the feature under the phone’s Battery settings. Temporarily disable it only to test whether it explains the behaviour.
Battery-protection features should normally remain enabled when they suit your routine, because their purpose is to reduce long-term battery stress.
10. Restart the Phone
A temporary software fault can interfere with charging detection or leave a process consuming excessive power.
Restart the phone normally and reconnect the charger.
A restart is particularly worthwhile when:
- Slow charging began suddenly
- The phone recently installed an update
- The charging label appears incorrect
- Battery use is unusually high
- The device has not restarted for a long time
Google includes restarting the device among its initial troubleshooting steps for charging and power problems.
11. Install Android and Manufacturer Updates

Open:

Slow wireless charging may be caused by:
