Driver Updates: Windows Update vs. Manufacturer vs. Third-Party Tools
A message appears claiming that several of your computer’s drivers are outdated.
Windows Update offers one version, the laptop manufacturer lists another, and a driver-updater application insists that it has found twelve “critical” updates.
Which source should you trust?
Drivers allow Windows to communicate with hardware such as:
- Graphics cards
- Network adapters
- Audio devices
- Printers and scanners
- Storage controllers
- Webcams
- Bluetooth devices

For most Windows 11 users, the safest hierarchy is:
- Use Windows Update for normal driver maintenance.
- Use the computer manufacturer for model-specific drivers, firmware and unresolved hardware problems.
- Use the individual component manufacturer selectively when there is a clear reason.
- Avoid generic third-party driver-updater utilities.
The newest version number is not automatically the best driver for a particular computer.
What a Driver Actually Does
A driver acts as the software layer between Windows and a hardware device.
When Windows needs to play sound, connect to Wi-Fi, display an image or read from an SSD, it communicates with the appropriate driver. The driver translates those requests into instructions the hardware understands.
Microsoft describes drivers as the software that lets Windows and connected devices communicate. Windows automatically downloads and installs many driver updates so devices remain secure, compatible and operational.

Option One: Windows Update

Optional driver updates are not normally installed automatically.
Advantages of Windows Update
Windows Update offers several important benefits.

Compatibility targeting
Windows Update does not simply present every driver produced for a broadly similar device.

- Automatic or optional delivery

This helps Windows select a package intended for the detected hardware and operating-system configuration.
Simpler recovery
Windows retains driver information and may allow a recently installed driver to be rolled back through Device Manager if the previous package remains available.
Suitable for routine maintenance
For ordinary office PCs, Windows Update usually provides the network, audio, display, printer and peripheral drivers required for normal operation.
Limitations of Windows Update
Windows Update does not always contain the newest driver published by the manufacturer.
A manufacturer may release a driver first through:

The Windows Update version may also be deliberately conservative. A slightly older package may have received broader compatibility testing or may be more suitable for general distribution.
That is not necessarily a disadvantage.

Should You Install Every Optional Driver?
No.
An optional driver should have a reason behind it.
Consider installing one when:
- A device is not working.
- Microsoft or the manufacturer recommends it for a known problem.
- Device Manager shows an error.
- The existing driver is causing crashes or instability.
- You require a feature included in the newer package.
- You are preparing for a documented Windows upgrade.
- Your IT provider has approved it.
Be more cautious when:
- The computer is working perfectly.
- The offered driver is older than the currently installed version.
- The description is vague.
- The same device has an OEM-specific package.
- You cannot identify which hardware it affects.
- The computer is business-managed.
Optional does not mean dangerous, but it does mean that Windows has not selected the package for automatic installation.
Do not treat the Optional updates page as a checklist that must always be emptied.
Option Two: The Computer Manufacturer
For a laptop, branded desktop or workstation, the computer manufacturer is often the best source for device-specific updates.
Examples include:
- Dell SupportAssist or Dell Command Update
- HP Support Assistant
- Lenovo Vantage or Lenovo System Update
- Microsoft Surface driver and firmware packages
- The support website for the exact model
Dell documents that SupportAssist and Dell Command Update can identify the computer and obtain relevant driver and firmware packages. HP directs users to HP Support Assistant for model-specific software, drivers and BIOS updates, while Lenovo Vantage provides a System Update function for Lenovo drivers and firmware.
Why OEM Drivers Can Be Different
A laptop manufacturer may customise a driver for the complete device rather than only the individual component.
A graphics package may need to account for:
- Switchable graphics
- Internal and external displays
- Brightness controls
- Power-saving behaviour
- Docking stations
- Manufacturer performance modes
- Thermal limits
An audio package may include:
- Device-specific amplifiers
- Microphone arrays

When the Manufacturer Should Be Your First Choice
Go directly to the computer manufacturer when dealing with:

Sometimes the company that made an individual component provides a newer driver than either Windows Update or the PC manufacturer.

This route can be appropriate when you have a clear requirement that the OEM package does not meet.

NVIDIA offers separate Game Ready and Studio driver channels. Game Ready drivers target new-game support, while Studio drivers receive testing focused on creative applications. Both official channels use Microsoft WHQL-certified packages.
A direct graphics driver may be appropriate when:
- A new game specifically requires it.
- A creative application certifies a particular version.
- The release notes fix an issue affecting you.
- The computer manufacturer no longer publishes updates.
- You need a recently added graphics feature.
- You are troubleshooting a confirmed display-driver fault.
For a business laptop with switchable graphics or manufacturer-specific display controls, check the computer manufacturer first.
Printers and Specialist Devices
Windows Update may provide a basic printer driver, while the manufacturer’s complete package adds:
- Scanning
- Finishing options
- Secure printing
- Toner monitoring
- Address books
- Device configuration
- Maintenance utilities
Microsoft recommends Windows Update as the first method for printer drivers, then other supported manufacturer methods when Windows Update does not provide what is required.
Similar reasoning applies to:

- Drawing tablets

- Industrial hardware
Use the official support site for the device—not a generic driver-download website.
Option Four: Generic Third-Party Driver-Updater Tools
Generic driver-updater applications scan a computer and claim to identify missing or outdated drivers from a large database.
Typical claims include:
- “Twenty-three drivers are outdated”
- “Your drivers are unstable”
- “Critical performance updates available”
- “Update every driver with one click”
These messages can appear alarming, especially when the computer seems slow.
However, a version-number difference does not prove that a driver is faulty, insecure or unsuitable.
Why Hamilton Group Does Not Recommend Them
Windows Update already provides controlled driver distribution, while computer manufacturers provide packages matched to their own systems. Microsoft also directs users to the hardware manufacturer when an appropriate driver cannot be found through Windows.
A generic updater adds another layer that must correctly determine:
- The exact hardware revision
- The computer manufacturer’s customisation
- The Windows build
- The correct architecture
- Which driver branch is appropriate
- Whether the new package should replace the OEM version
- Whether associated software and firmware are required
In Hamilton Group’s view, this additional trust and compatibility risk offers little benefit when Windows Update, Device Manager and official manufacturer services are available.
Potential problems include:
- Installing a generic driver over a customised OEM package
- Offering beta or inappropriate driver branches
- Selecting the wrong hardware revision
- Replacing a stable driver purely because another has a higher number
- Bundling advertising or unwanted software
- Creating unnecessary restore or subscription prompts
- Making it difficult to identify which change caused a fault
- Updating many drivers simultaneously, complicating rollback
Do not confuse generic driver-updater utilities with the computer manufacturer’s own update application.
Dell Command Update, HP Support Assistant and Lenovo Vantage are manufacturer tools designed for their respective systems. A general-purpose application that claims to update every brand of computer is a different category.
Is a Digitally Signed Driver Automatically Safe?
A digital signature is important, but it is not a complete guarantee of suitability.
Windows uses digital signatures to verify the integrity of a driver package and the identity of its publisher. On 64-bit Windows, kernel-mode drivers generally need to satisfy Windows signing requirements before they can load.
A signature helps answer:
- Who published the package?
- Has the package been altered since it was signed?
It does not necessarily answer:
- Is it intended for this exact laptop?
- Is it newer in a useful way?
- Will it preserve manufacturer-specific features?
- Does it fix the problem you have?
- Is it more stable than the current driver?
A properly signed but incorrect driver can still cause problems.
Device Manager: Useful, but Not a Universal Update Service
Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting:
Device Manager
You can then:
- Expand the relevant hardware category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
You can also select Browse my computer for drivers when you have downloaded an official package manually. Microsoft documents both methods.
“The Best Drivers Are Already Installed”
This message does not prove that no newer driver exists anywhere.
It means Windows did not select a preferable driver through the sources available to that Device Manager search.
A newer package might still exist on:
- The Optional updates page
- The computer manufacturer’s website
- The component manufacturer’s website
- Your organisation’s deployment system
Do not repeatedly select Update driver expecting Device Manager to search every manufacturer’s website.
Check the Current Driver Before Replacing It
In Device Manager:
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
Record:
- Driver provider
- Driver date
- Driver version
- Digital signer
Also check the Events and General tabs for errors.
A driver date may appear old even when the package is correct. Manufacturers sometimes retain a consistent date for ranking or servicing purposes.
Judge the package by:
- Hardware compatibility
- Release notes
- Driver version
- Stability
- The problem it addresses
Do not replace it solely because its displayed date is older than expected.
When Should You Update a Driver?
A driver update is normally justified when:
- The hardware is not detected.
- Device Manager shows an error.
- The device disconnects or crashes.
- A new Windows version requires an updated driver.
- A security advisory affects the installed version.
- The manufacturer documents a fix you need.
- A game or professional application requires a newer graphics driver.

Leaving the current driver may be sensible when:

- The computer manufacturer recommends its own older version.
- The new version is intended for different hardware.
- You cannot confirm the source.
Drivers are not like antivirus definitions. Every driver does not need to carry the latest possible public version at all times.
A Safe Driver-Update Order
For most Windows 11 computers, use this sequence.
1. Back up important data
A normal driver update should not affect documents, but storage, chipset and firmware updates can have wider consequences.
2. Create a restore point where appropriate
Search Start for:

Ensure System Protection is enabled and create a named restore point before a significant manual change.
System Restore does not replace a file backup.
3. Record the current driver
Take a screenshot of the Driver tab or record the version manually.
4. Run Windows Update
Install normal Windows updates and restart.
5. Review Optional updates
Install only drivers relevant to an actual requirement.
6. Check the computer manufacturer
Use its official application or support site for:
- BIOS
- Firmware
- Chipset
- Storage
- Power management
- Docks
- Model-specific devices
7. Use the component manufacturer selectively
Do this only when you have identified the exact component and a clear reason for using its newer package.
8. Restart
Even when Windows does not demand a restart, one may be necessary to replace an active driver fully.
9. Test the affected function
Test the exact activity that justified the update.
For example:
- Join a video call.
- Connect to Wi-Fi.
- Use the docking station.
- Print and scan.
- Run the affected game.
- Test sleep and wake.
- Connect the external monitor.
- Copy data to the relevant storage device.
10. Check Device Manager and Reliability Monitor
Confirm that no new warnings or crashes appeared.
Updating BIOS and Firmware Requires Extra Care
BIOS, UEFI and firmware updates are related to drivers but can affect the device before Windows starts.
They may update:
- Processor microcode

- Thermal behaviour
- Boot configuration
Use only the exact package supplied for the model.
Before updating:

Roll Back the Driver
Open:
Device Manager > Device properties > Driver

Microsoft recommends driver rollback when hardware worked before a recent driver or Windows update. The option is available only when Windows still retains a previous driver version.
Roll Back Is Unavailable
When the button is greyed out:
- Download the known-good package from the official manufacturer.
- Disconnect from the internet temporarily if Windows repeatedly replaces it.

- Restart.

- Test the device.
- Reconnect and review Windows Update.

Should You Use “Clean Installation” Options for Graphics Drivers?
