Driver Updates: Windows Update vs Manufacturer vs Third-Party Tools
A program pops up claiming:
“17 drivers are outdated.”
Windows Update offers a different driver.
Dell, HP or Lenovo lists another version.
Intel or NVIDIA has something newer again.
So which one should you install?
For most Windows 11 computers, the safest approach is:
1. Windows Update for normal driver maintenance.
2. Your PC manufacturer for model-specific hardware, firmware and troubleshooting.
3. The individual component manufacturer when you have a specific reason.
4. Avoid generic third-party driver-updater utilities.
The newest version number is not automatically the best driver for your computer.
What Does a Driver Actually Do?
A driver allows Windows to communicate with hardware such as:
graphics cards
Wi-Fi adapters
Ethernet controllers
audio hardware
printers
webcams
storage controllers
touchpads
USB and Thunderbolt devices
Microsoft describes drivers as the software that allows Windows and connected hardware to communicate, and Windows 11 automatically installs many recommended drivers through Windows Update.

newer does not always mean better matched.
A slightly older driver offered through Windows Update may be the more appropriate package for your exact hardware and Windows configuration.
For ordinary business PCs, that stability is often more valuable than chasing the newest public version.
Should You Install Every Optional Driver?
No.
Treat Optional Driver Updates as available alternatives, not a checklist you must clear.
Consider installing one when:
a device is malfunctioning
Device Manager reports an error
the manufacturer recommends it
it fixes a known issue affecting you
a new Windows release requires it
your IT provider has approved it
Be more cautious when:
everything already works correctly
you don't know which device the driver affects
the offered package is older than your installed version
the PC is business-critical
the manufacturer recommends a different package
Optional does not mean bad. It means Windows has not selected that package for normal automatic installation.
Option 2: Your Computer Manufacturer
For a branded laptop, desktop or workstation, the manufacturer is often the next place to check.

Why Manufacturer Drivers Can Be Different

For example, Intel may manufacture the graphics hardware, but the laptop manufacturer may customise the driver package around its:

When the PC Manufacturer Should Be Your First Choice
Go directly to the manufacturer for things such as:

This is especially important after:

Graphics Drivers Are the Classic Example
A direct NVIDIA, AMD or Intel graphics driver may make sense when:
an application requires a newer version
a game needs a specific fix
a professional application recommends a particular release
the OEM no longer publishes updates
the component vendor has fixed a fault affecting you
But for a business laptop using:
hybrid graphics
manufacturer power management
unusual docking
custom display functionality
I would still check the laptop manufacturer first.
Component Manufacturer Does Not Always Mean Better
Suppose:
Dell driver = version 31.0.x
and:
Intel driver = version 32.0.x
That does not automatically mean the Intel package is “better”.
The relevant questions are:
Does it support this exact configuration?
Does it solve the issue I have?
Has the manufacturer validated it?
Does it preserve all required functions?
A version number alone does not answer any of those questions.
Option 4: Third-Party Driver-Updater Utilities
This is the category I would avoid.
These applications commonly advertise messages such as:
“23 outdated drivers detected.”
“Critical drivers missing.”
“Update every driver now.”
That sounds alarming.
But a driver being older than another version somewhere on the internet does not mean:
it is insecure
it is broken
it needs replacing
the newer package is appropriate
A generic updater has to correctly determine:
exact hardware revision
Windows version
architecture
OEM customisation
correct driver branch
dependencies
whether firmware is also required
Windows Update and the PC manufacturer already have much better information about the system.
Why Third-Party Updaters Can Cause Trouble
Problems can include:
generic driver replacing an OEM-customised package
wrong hardware revision
inappropriate beta/new branch
updating several drivers at once
bundled software
unnecessary subscriptions

with a generic third-party driver updater.
Manufacturer tools are designed around their own hardware.
A program claiming to update every driver on every PC from every manufacturer is a very different proposition.
“The Best Drivers Are Already Installed” Does Not Mean What You Think
Device Manager can search for drivers.
Right-click a device and choose:
Update driver > Search automatically for drivers
Microsoft still documents this supported method.
But if Windows says:
“The best drivers for your device are already installed”
that does not necessarily mean:
“No newer driver exists anywhere.”
It means Windows has not selected a preferable driver from the sources available to that search.
A newer package may still exist through:
Optional Updates
the PC manufacturer
the component manufacturer
your organisation's management system
Sometimes Rollback Is Better Than Updating
This is an important principle.
Suppose:
Wi-Fi worked yesterday.
A new driver installed overnight.
Wi-Fi stops working today.
Your first instinct should not necessarily be:
find an even newer driver.
Open:
Device Manager > Network adapter > Properties > Driver
and check:
Roll Back Driver
Microsoft specifically recommends driver rollback when a problem starts after a recent driver update.
That can be the fastest way to prove whether the new driver caused the fault.
When Should You Update a Driver?
A driver update is generally justified when:
hardware is not detected
Device Manager reports an error
the device keeps disconnecting
Windows upgrade requires it
a security advisory affects it
the vendor release notes describe your problem
an application needs the newer driver
the existing driver causes crashes
IT has approved the deployment
When Should You Leave It Alone?
Leaving a stable driver alone is often completely sensible when:
everything works
the update adds nothing you need
the business-critical device hasn't been tested
the offered package is vaguely described
you cannot confirm the source
Drivers are not antivirus definitions.
You do not need the newest public version of every driver installed at all times.
A Safe Driver-Update Order
For most Windows 11 PCs:
1. Record the current driver version.
2. Check Windows Update.
3. Review Optional Driver Updates only where relevant.
4. Check the computer manufacturer's support tools.
5. Use the component manufacturer only for a defined reason.
6. Restart.
7. Test the exact function you were trying to fix.
8. Check Device Manager for new warnings.
9. Roll back if the new driver created a problem.
That is safer than running:
Update all 27 drivers
and hoping for the best.
Businesses Should Manage Drivers Centrally

For business-critical hardware, staged deployment is sensible.

Don't Confuse Drivers With BIOS and Firmware
Drivers normally operate within Windows.
BIOS/UEFI and firmware can affect hardware before Windows even starts.
Firmware updates can change:

thermal behaviour
USB-C
Thunderbolt
storage
booting
security
power management
Use only the exact manufacturer package.
Before firmware updates:
confirm the exact model
ensure stable power
save the BitLocker recovery key
read the release notes
do not interrupt the update
Firmware deserves more caution than an ordinary printer driver.
