Cloud gaming sounds almost too good to be true.

Instead of buying an expensive graphics card or console, the game runs on powerful hardware in a remote data centre.

Your device simply:

  1. sends your controller, keyboard or mouse input to the server
  2. receives a compressed video stream of the game
  3. displays it almost immediately

That means an ordinary:

  • laptop
  • Mac
  • Chromebook
  • tablet
  • smartphone
  • smart TV
  • handheld

can potentially run games that would be far beyond its own graphics hardware.

And when the network conditions are right, cloud gaming can be remarkably good.

But it is not simply:

Netflix for games.

Netflix can buffer video several seconds ahead.

A game cannot.

If you press the brake in a racing game, fire a weapon or turn the camera, the server needs to receive that input, process it, render the next frame, compress it and send the image back to you.

That makes network consistency absolutely critical.

The Real Cloud Gaming Connection

The path looks roughly like this:

controller → your device → home network → ISP → cloud gaming data centre → game → encoded video → internet → your device → display

Every stage adds a little delay.

That is why a connection showing:

900 Mbps download

can still deliver worse cloud gaming than a stable:

80 Mbps connection

with lower latency and almost no packet loss.

How Much Internet Speed Do You Actually Need?

Not as much as many people assume.

For GeForce NOW, NVIDIA currently lists approximately:

  • 15 Mbps for 720p/60
  • 25 Mbps for 1080p/60
  • 35 Mbps for 1440p/120
  • 45 Mbps for 4K/120
  • 65 Mbps for 5K/120

depending on device and membership tier. NVIDIA requires latency below 80 ms to its data centre and recommends below 40 ms for the best experience.

Xbox Cloud Gaming currently says around 10 Mbps can be sufficient on mobile, while approximately 20 Mbps is recommended on PCs, consoles and tablets, with 5 GHz Wi-Fi recommended.

So once you have enough raw bandwidth, simply buying faster broadband provides diminishing returns.

The important measurements become:

latency

jitter

packet loss

consistency

Latency Matters More Than Most People Realise

Latency is the delay between sending information and receiving a response.

For ordinary browsing:

70 ms

may feel perfectly normal.

For a turn-based strategy game:

probably fine.

For a competitive shooter:

you may notice it immediately.

Cloud gaming inevitably adds some additional latency because your inputs need to travel to the data centre and the rendered image has to return.

A good cloud platform minimises this extremely well.

It cannot eliminate physics.

Jitter Can Be Worse Than Consistently Higher Latency

Suppose one connection gives:

30 ms, 31 ms, 29 ms, 32 ms

while another gives:

15 ms, 80 ms, 22 ms, 110 ms, 19 ms

The second has a lower best-case figure.

But the first will probably feel much smoother.

That variation is called jitter.

High jitter can produce:

  • uneven controls
  • stuttering
  • temporary blur
  • audio interruption

For cloud gaming, consistency often matters more than one impressive speed-test result.

Packet Loss Is Particularly Damaging

Packet loss means some information simply never reaches its destination.

In a normal file download, the data can be retransmitted.

Real-time game streaming does not have the luxury of waiting very long.

Packet loss may appear as:

  • image breakup
  • resolution drops
  • skipped frames
  • audio glitches
  • delayed controls

A small amount of persistent packet loss can ruin a cloud session even on gigabit broadband.

Where Cloud Gaming Works Brilliantly

Older or Low-Powered Computers

This remains one of its greatest strengths.

A modest computer may struggle to render a modern game locally but have no difficulty decoding a video stream.

NVIDIA currently supports GeForce NOW across Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, Linux, phones, tablets, TVs and a growing number of gaming handhelds.

That means cloud gaming can significantly extend the useful life of older hardware.

If your PC is still perfectly good for:

  • email
  • browsing
  • Office
  • streaming

but its graphics card is obsolete, cloud gaming may be much more attractive than replacing the whole machine just for games.

Macs and Chromebooks

Cloud gaming also bypasses many traditional platform restrictions.

The game itself may technically be a Windows game, while your Mac or Chromebook merely receives its video stream.

This can make cloud gaming particularly appealing to people who do not want to maintain a separate gaming PC.

Limited Storage

Modern games can exceed:

100 GB

and sometimes much more once expansions and texture packs are included.

Cloud gaming removes most local game storage requirements.

That can be extremely useful on:

  • laptops with 256 GB SSDs
  • handheld devices
  • Macs with expensive storage upgrades

Instead of spending hours downloading a 150 GB title, you may be able to start playing almost immediately.

Casual and Single-Player Games

Cloud gaming is especially convincing with games that do not depend on millisecond reactions.

Examples include:

  • RPGs
  • adventure games
  • turn-based strategy
  • management games
  • simulation games
  • puzzle games
  • slower story-driven titles

A small amount of extra latency that might irritate a competitive esports player can be virtually irrelevant in a slow-paced RPG.

Gaming Across Several Devices

One of cloud gaming's most attractive advantages is flexibility.

You might play:

living-room TV → laptop → handheld → tablet

without maintaining a gaming installation on every device.

Xbox Cloud Gaming now works across PCs, mobile devices, consoles, selected TVs, Fire TV devices and other supported hardware. It also allows selected cloud-playable titles that you own to be streamed even when they are not part of Game Pass.

That makes cloud gaming increasingly useful as a second way to access games, even for people who already own gaming hardware.

Where Cloud Gaming Still Struggles

Competitive Gaming

This remains its hardest use case.

Games such as:

  • Counter-Strike-style shooters
  • fighting games
  • competitive racing
  • rhythm games
  • esports titles

reward extremely low and consistent latency.

Local gaming has a fundamental advantage:

controller → PC/console → display

There is no round trip to a remote data centre.

Cloud gaming has improved enormously, particularly at high frame rates.

But serious competitive players will generally still prefer local hardware.

Poor Wi-Fi

Cloud gaming exposes Wi-Fi problems that YouTube may completely hide.

Video streaming can buffer.

Cloud gaming cannot.

Weak or congested Wi-Fi can result in:

  • sudden blur
  • stuttering
  • input delay
  • audio break-up
  • disconnections

NVIDIA recommends Ethernet or a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection for GeForce NOW.

Where practical:

use Ethernet.

It removes:

  • wireless interference
  • signal fluctuation
  • channel congestion

from the equation.

5 GHz and 6 GHz Wi-Fi Can Work Extremely Well

Ethernet is not mandatory.

A properly designed Wi-Fi network can provide an excellent cloud gaming experience.

Prefer:

  • 5 GHz
  • 6 GHz where supported

over heavily congested 2.4 GHz.

Also:

  • stay reasonably close to the access point
  • avoid thick walls
  • avoid cheap repeaters where possible
  • keep firmware current
  • use wired mesh backhaul if available

The number printed on the Wi-Fi box matters much less than whether latency remains stable.

Busy Household Networks

Cloud gaming may be perfect at 10am and terrible at 8pm.

Look at what everyone else is doing.

Examples include:

  • 4K streaming
  • game downloads
  • OneDrive synchronisation
  • cloud backup
  • video calls
  • Windows updates

Uploads are particularly capable of creating latency.

If one computer saturates the upstream connection with a large cloud backup, gaming can become unusable while web browsing still appears normal.

Good router queue management or QoS can help.

But it cannot create bandwidth your internet service does not have.

Mobile Data

Cloud gaming over 5G can be excellent.

It can also change completely within seconds.

Performance depends on:

  • signal
  • cell congestion
  • movement
  • network routing
  • data allowance

Xbox supports cloud gaming over mobile data, while NVIDIA supports mobile platforms with relatively modest headline bandwidth requirements.

The difficulty is consistency.

Moving train + changing mobile cells + cloud gaming is a much harder environment than:

fixed fibre broadband + Ethernet.

Public Wi-Fi

Hotel, airport and train Wi-Fi can be perfectly usable for email yet terrible for cloud gaming.

Potential problems include:

  • congestion
  • high latency
  • bandwidth shaping
  • captive portals
  • packet loss
  • session limits

Do not judge cloud gaming as a technology based solely on one awful hotel Wi-Fi session.

Server Distance Still Matters

You cannot solve geographic latency with faster broadband.

The cloud gaming server needs to be reasonably close in network terms.

Your ISP's routing matters too.

Two neighbours using different ISPs could experience noticeably different performance to the same gaming service because their traffic follows different routes.

That is why testing the actual cloud gaming provider is more useful than relying entirely on a generic internet speed test.

Game Libraries Are Still Restricted

Cloud gaming is not a universal virtual gaming PC.

A game may be unavailable because of:

  • publisher licensing
  • technical compatibility
  • platform policy
  • anti-cheat
  • commercial agreements

GeForce NOW may connect to game stores you already use, but only supported titles can be launched.

Xbox increasingly allows streaming of selected games you already own, but that still does not mean every Xbox title is cloud-enabled.

Before subscribing for one particular game:

check that exact title first.

Modding Is Still Much Better Locally

If you like heavily modifying games, local PC gaming remains much more flexible.

Cloud platforms may prevent you from:

  • modifying game files
  • installing arbitrary mods
  • running unsupported launchers
  • installing custom drivers
  • accessing the underlying Windows environment

Some games support mods through official platforms.

But cloud gaming is not the ideal environment for people who enjoy deeply customising everything.

Specialist Controllers and Peripherals

Standard:

  • Xbox controllers
  • PlayStation controllers
  • keyboard
  • mouse

are broadly well supported.

Specialist hardware requires more care.

Examples include:

  • flight sticks
  • racing wheels
  • pedals
  • specialist controllers

Interestingly, support is improving. NVIDIA now officially lists a number of Logitech racing wheels and several HOTAS products for GeForce NOW on supported platforms.

But compatibility still depends on:

service + device + operating system + accessory.

Check before purchasing hardware specifically for cloud use.

Picture Quality Is Not Identical to Local Rendering

Cloud gaming sends you compressed video.

That compression can be extremely good.

But it is still compression.

It tends to become most visible in scenes containing:

  • fog
  • smoke
  • foliage
  • darkness
  • particles
  • rapid movement
  • fine detail

Local rendering sends the display the actual locally rendered frames without encoding them across the internet first.

So even a:

4K cloud stream

is not necessarily pixel-for-pixel equivalent to locally rendered 4K.

On a laptop screen, you may barely notice.

On a large premium television viewed closely, you may.

Higher Frame Rates Change Cloud Gaming

One of the biggest modern improvements is the move beyond 60 FPS.

GeForce NOW now supports options reaching:

  • 120 FPS
  • 240 FPS
  • even 360 FPS

in supported configurations and subscription tiers.

Higher frame rates can reduce perceived input latency because frames are generated and delivered more frequently.

That makes cloud gaming substantially more responsive than early 30/60 FPS streaming services.

But you still need:

  • compatible display
  • supported device
  • sufficient bandwidth
  • low latency
  • appropriate membership

A 360 FPS option cannot compensate for a network experiencing 120 ms of unstable latency.

Cloud Gaming on Linux Has Improved Too

One particularly current change is GeForce NOW's native Linux support, currently described by NVIDIA as a beta experience for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with appropriate hardware and drivers.

That further broadens the type of computer that can become a capable gaming device without locally running the Windows version of the game.

Is Cloud Gaming Cheaper?

Sometimes.

Cloud gaming can reduce the upfront cost of:

  • gaming PC
  • graphics card
  • console
  • storage upgrades

But you may pay for:

  • subscription
  • premium streaming tier
  • games
  • faster broadband
  • controllers

Over many years, subscriptions add up.

So I would describe the advantage as:

lower upfront hardware cost and greater flexibility

rather than:

guaranteed cheaper gaming.

The Best Solution May Be Hybrid

For many gamers, the strongest setup is not:

cloud or local

but:

cloud and local.

Install locally:

  • competitive games
  • favourite games
  • modded games
  • games you need offline

Use cloud gaming for:

  • occasional titles
  • games on another device
  • testing before installing
  • travel
  • huge games you do not want occupying storage

That gives you the convenience of the cloud without giving up local gaming's strongest advantages.

How to Make Cloud Gaming Work Better

If the experience is poor:

  1. Test Ethernet.
  2. If using Wi-Fi, use 5 GHz or 6 GHz.
  3. Pause downloads and cloud backups.
  4. Disconnect VPN temporarily where appropriate.
  5. Select the nearest service region where possible.
  6. Reduce resolution before blaming the whole service.
  7. Check packet loss and latency—not just download speed.
  8. Test at another time of day.
  9. Update router firmware and network drivers.
  10. Test the same cloud service from another connection.

A stable:

1080p/60

stream is far better than an unstable:

4K/120

stream.

Who Should Seriously Consider Cloud Gaming?

Cloud gaming makes particular sense if you:

  • already have excellent broadband
  • use a Mac or Chromebook
  • have an older PC
  • dislike huge downloads
  • play mainly single-player games
  • want gaming across several devices
  • do not want a large hardware investment

It is less attractive if you:

  • play competitively
  • heavily modify games
  • have unstable internet
  • require offline play
  • depend on unsupported specialist peripherals
  • want absolute maximum picture quality

The Verdict

Cloud gaming is no longer a novelty.

With the right network, services such as GeForce NOW can now deliver high-resolution, high-refresh gaming that would have sounded unrealistic only a few years ago, while Xbox Cloud Gaming is increasingly useful across TVs, computers, mobile devices and consoles.

But the fundamental limitation remains unchanged:

your internet connection becomes part of the gaming hardware.

For cloud gaming, the most important specification is not:

500 Mbps vs 1 Gbps.

It is:

low latency + low jitter + almost no packet loss + a stable route to the provider's data centre.

Get those right and cloud gaming can be excellent.

Get them wrong and even gigabit broadband can feel awful.
