There's an old laptop sitting in a cupboard.

It probably still works.

The battery isn't what it used to be. The fan occasionally sounds like a small aircraft. Windows feels painfully slow, and opening Teams alongside a few browser tabs seems to require an act of faith.

So the obvious conclusion is:

The laptop is finished.

Maybe.

But before sending it for recycling, there is another possibility:

Linux.

Installing a lightweight Linux distribution can transform some older laptops, particularly machines whose hardware is still fundamentally sound but which struggle under the weight of a modern Windows installation.

That doesn't mean Linux magically turns a 12-year-old laptop into a new workstation.

It doesn't.

But choose the right distribution, add an SSD if necessary and understand what you're actually going to use the machine for, and an apparently obsolete laptop can become surprisingly useful again.

The important part is choosing the right Linux distribution for the hardware rather than simply installing whichever one you've heard of.

First: How Old Is “Old”?

Age isn't actually the most useful measurement.

We've seen relatively old business laptops that remain perfectly usable because they have:

  • A decent Intel Core processor
  • 8 or 16 GB of RAM
  • An SSD
  • Sensible graphics hardware
  • A healthy battery
  • Standard Wi-Fi hardware

And we've seen much newer budget laptops that were frustrating from the day they left the factory.

Before choosing Linux, establish what you're actually working with.

Look at:

Processor

Is it a 64-bit Intel or AMD CPU?

RAM

2 GB? 4 GB? 8 GB? 16 GB?

Storage

Mechanical hard drive or SSD?

Graphics

Integrated Intel graphics are often relatively straightforward; unusual or discrete graphics hardware can require more investigation.

Wi-Fi

Older or obscure wireless adapters occasionally need additional drivers.

Battery

Linux can't resurrect physically worn-out battery cells.

Screen and keyboard

There's little point rescuing a laptop whose display hinge is disintegrating.

The operating system is only one part of the equation.

64-Bit Hardware Is Increasingly Important

For mainstream Linux distributions in 2026, you should generally expect to need a 64-bit processor.

For example, Linux Mint has only provided 64-bit releases since Mint 20, and its own installation documentation notes that most PCs manufactured after 2007 are likely to have a 64-bit processor.

That means truly ancient 32-bit laptops require more specialist distributions.

At that point, however, ask whether keeping the hardware alive is actually worthwhile.

There's a difference between:

Giving useful hardware another life

and:

Keeping a museum exhibit operational because technically you can.

He also knows when equipment needs retiring.

Linux Mint: Our Starting Point for Many People

For somebody coming from Windows, Linux Mint is one of the first distributions we'd consider.

It's relatively approachable, has a familiar desktop concept and doesn't require somebody to become a Linux expert before they can open Firefox.

The current Linux Mint 22.3 release is available in three principal desktop editions:

Cinnamon

MATE

Xfce.

Which one you choose matters on older hardware.

Linux Mint Cinnamon

Cinnamon provides the fullest Mint desktop experience.

For an older laptop that still has:

8 GB RAM.

A reasonable Core i5/i7-class processor.

An SSD.

we'd probably try Cinnamon first.

It looks polished, behaves in a way many Windows users quickly understand and doesn't make the computer feel as though you've installed an operating system designed purely to save every last megabyte.

But on genuinely limited hardware, there are lighter options.

Linux Mint Xfce

For an ageing laptop, Mint Xfce becomes particularly interesting.

Linux Mint itself describes Xfce as extremely stable and very light on resource usage compared with its other desktop options.

You still get the benefits of the Mint ecosystem, but with a desktop designed to consume fewer resources.

For an older laptop with modest RAM, that can make more sense than running a heavier desktop simply because it looks prettier.

Linux Mint MATE

MATE sits somewhere between the two conceptually.

It's traditional, relatively lightweight and familiar.

If Cinnamon feels a little heavy but you don't particularly like Xfce, MATE is absolutely worth trying.

And that's one of Linux's biggest advantages:

You have a choice.

Lubuntu: When Hardware Is More Limited

If the laptop really is struggling, Lubuntu deserves serious consideration.

Lubuntu is an official Ubuntu flavour using the lightweight LXQt desktop.

The current Lubuntu 26.04 LTS release uses LXQt 2.3 and is supported until April 2029.

Ubuntu's own 26.04 documentation specifically recommends considering Xubuntu or Lubuntu on systems below the requirements for the full Ubuntu desktop and says those flavours can be installed on machines with 2 GB RAM or more.

The Lubuntu installation image itself requires at least 1 GB of RAM to install.

But there's an important distinction here:

Being able to install an operating system does not mean the computer will provide a good modern computing experience.

That's especially true once you open a browser.

Standard Ubuntu Isn't Necessarily the Best Choice for an Old Laptop

Ubuntu is probably the Linux distribution many non-Linux users have heard of.

And Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is an excellent mainstream desktop operating system with security maintenance through April 2031.

But that doesn't automatically make standard Ubuntu Desktop the best choice for ageing hardware.

Canonical recommends for Ubuntu 26.04 Desktop:

2 GHz dual-core processor or better

6 GB RAM

25 GB free storage.

If your old laptop has 4 GB of RAM, deliberately choosing a lighter Ubuntu flavour or another lightweight distribution is likely to make more sense.

Installing the heaviest desktop you can technically boot defeats much of the point of rescuing the machine.

The Browser Is Probably Your Biggest Problem

This is the part that gets overlooked in discussions about lightweight Linux.

You install a tiny desktop environment.

It idles using impressively little RAM.

Excellent.

Then you open:

Chrome.

Microsoft 365.

YouTube.

Gmail.

A news site.

Canva.

Teams in the browser.

And suddenly the computer is struggling again.

Why?

Because modern websites are enormous applications.

Changing operating system can reduce the resources consumed by the OS.

It cannot make a complex modern website stop being complex.

This is why we'd hesitate to recommend a 2 GB laptop as a serious everyday internet machine in 2026, even if Linux itself technically runs.

The operating system might be happy.

The modern web won't be.

4 GB Is Really the Interesting Minimum

For ordinary light use, we'd broadly think about old laptops like this:

2 GB RAM

Special-purpose or extremely light usage. Linux may run, but modern browsing will be restrictive.

4 GB RAM

Usable with a lightweight distribution for basic browsing, email, documents and simple tasks, provided expectations are realistic.

8 GB RAM

Far more comfortable and potentially genuinely useful for everyday Linux computing.

16 GB RAM

The laptop's processor, battery and overall age are probably more relevant limitations than memory.

These aren't hard system requirements.

They're practical expectations.

Before Changing Linux Distribution, Fit an SSD

If the laptop still has a mechanical hard drive, this may be the single most worthwhile hardware improvement available.

Replacing an old HDD with an SSD can dramatically improve:

Boot times.

Application launching.

Updates.

File operations.

General responsiveness.

Installing an ultra-light Linux distribution onto a slow mechanical hard drive while ignoring a cheap SSD upgrade can be false economy.

If the machine accepts a standard SATA SSD, we'd strongly consider doing that first.

Linux plus an SSD can make an old laptop feel dramatically different.

Linux plus a dying 5,400 RPM hard drive is considerably less exciting.

Try Linux Before Installing It

One of the nicest features of many Linux distributions is the live environment.

You can write the installation image to a USB drive and boot the laptop from it without immediately replacing the existing operating system.

Ubuntu explicitly supports trying the desktop from USB before installation, and Lubuntu's installation media similarly allows you to run the desktop without changing the computer.

Do this.

Before wiping anything, test:

Wi-Fi.

Sound.

Trackpad.

Keyboard.

Display brightness.

Bluetooth.

Webcam.

External monitor.

Sleep and wake.

Graphics.

USB ports.

If everything works, excellent.

If the Wi-Fi adapter doesn't appear, it's considerably nicer discovering that before deleting Windows.

Don't Wipe the Drive Until You've Backed It Up

Linux installation isn't a backup strategy.

Before repartitioning, formatting or replacing the drive, make sure anything important has been copied somewhere safe.

Check:

Documents.

Desktop.

Pictures.

Downloads.

Browser bookmarks.

Saved passwords where appropriate.

Email archives.

Application data.

Photographs.

Anything stored in strange folders.

And verify the backup.

Don't just assume OneDrive contained everything because you vaguely remember seeing a cloud icon once.

What Do You Actually Want the Laptop to Do?

This should determine the distribution more than internet arguments about which Linux distro is “best”.

Basic Web Browsing and Email

Try:

Linux Mint Xfce

or:

Lubuntu

General Home Computing

Try:

Linux Mint Cinnamon

if the hardware is reasonably capable.

Documents and LibreOffice

Most mainstream distributions will cope perfectly well.

Learning Linux

Ubuntu or Mint are both sensible starting points because of their large communities and documentation.

Very Limited Hardware

Lubuntu or another genuinely lightweight environment may be more appropriate.

Software Development

An older business laptop with 8–16 GB RAM and an SSD can make an excellent Linux development machine.

Giving a Child a Basic Computer

Linux can work extremely well, but think carefully about application compatibility, parental controls, school software and device management before assuming it replaces a Windows or Chromebook environment perfectly.

The operating system needs to fit the job.

What About Microsoft 365?

This matters for businesses.

Microsoft 365 is increasingly web-based, so many services can be used from Linux through a supported browser.

You can access things such as:

Outlook on the web.

Word for the web.

Excel for the web.

PowerPoint for the web.

SharePoint.

OneDrive through browser interfaces.

Teams functionality through the web where supported.

But don't assume that means Linux is a drop-in replacement for every Microsoft 365 business workstation.

Desktop Office compatibility matters.

Specialist Excel functionality matters.

Outlook workflows matter.

Third-party applications matter.

Device management matters.

Security tooling matters.

Peripheral support matters.

Before converting a business laptop to Linux, establish what that employee actually uses.

Application Compatibility Is the Real Question

The biggest question isn't:

“Will Linux run on this laptop?”

It's:

“Will the applications I need run on Linux?”

If all you need is:

Firefox.

LibreOffice.

Email.

Video.

Basic image editing.

Then probably.

If you need:

A specialist Windows accounting package.

Industry-specific software.

A particular VPN client.

Microsoft Access.

Complex Excel add-ins.

Windows-only hardware tools.

Then perhaps not.

There may be alternatives.

There may be compatibility layers.

There may be browser versions.

But for business systems, don't build an entire workflow around:

“Apparently somebody on Reddit got it working with Wine.”

Supportability matters.

Don't Choose a Distro Purely Because It's Tiny

This is another common mistake.

People search:

“smallest Linux distro”

and find something that uses almost no memory.

Brilliant.

Except perhaps:

The interface is unfamiliar.

Hardware configuration is harder.

Software repositories are smaller.

Documentation is limited.

Updates require more knowledge.

The employee hates it.

A desktop operating system isn't a benchmark competition.

Saving 300 MB of RAM is not worthwhile if the user spends every morning wondering how to connect to Wi-Fi.

Choose the lightest distribution that remains comfortable and supportable for the person actually using it.

Security Updates Still Matter

An old laptop running Linux is not magically secure simply because it isn't Windows.

Linux needs:

Updates.

Supported software.

Browser patches.

Strong passwords.

Appropriate firewall configuration.

Secure applications.

Sensible user permissions.

You should choose a distribution with a clear support lifecycle rather than installing some abandoned release from six years ago because somebody said it was lightweight.

For example, Ubuntu 26.04 LTS receives five years of standard security and maintenance updates, while Lubuntu 26.04 LTS is supported until April 2029.

Supported beats tiny.

The Buff IT Guy's Old-Laptop Workout

The Buff IT Guy finds an old laptop in the cupboard.

He doesn't immediately throw the heaviest Linux desktop he can find onto it.

First he checks the fundamentals.

64-bit CPU?

Good.

4 GB RAM?

Manage expectations.

8 GB RAM?

Much better.

Mechanical hard drive?

SSD time.

Wi-Fi works?

Test it.

Battery lasts eleven minutes?

Linux isn't fixing chemistry.

Then he asks the most important question:

What are we actually going to use this thing for?

That's how you choose the distribution.

Not by picking whichever Linux logo looks coolest.

Our Practical Recommendations for 2026

For most people rescuing an old 64-bit laptop, we'd start with three options.

Linux Mint Cinnamon

Best when the laptop is older but still reasonably capable and you want an approachable Windows-like desktop.

Linux Mint Xfce

Our strong choice for older hardware where you want Mint but need something lighter. Mint itself identifies Xfce as its lightest desktop option.

Lubuntu 26.04 LTS

A good option for more limited hardware where keeping resource usage down is particularly important.

And before installing any of them:

Try the live USB.

The laptop will tell you surprisingly quickly whether the idea is sensible.

When Should You Give Up and Replace the Laptop?

Linux can extend hardware life.

But it can't fix everything.

We'd think seriously about retirement when the machine has several of these problems:

Battery replacement is uneconomical.

The display is damaged.

Hinges are failing.

The processor is painfully slow.

RAM cannot be upgraded and is severely limited.

Storage is unreliable.

Wi-Fi hardware is problematic.

The laptop runs excessively hot.

Replacement parts are difficult to obtain.

Your required applications won't run.

The machine no longer meets your business security requirements.

At some point, spending three hours engineering a workaround for a laptop worth £40 stops being environmentally responsible reuse and starts becoming expensive nostalgia.

For Businesses, Linux Can Still Be Extremely Useful

Linux isn't only a way to resurrect Granny's old laptop.

It has serious business uses.

Development machines.

Technical workstations.

Servers.

Monitoring systems.

Dedicated browser terminals.

Special-purpose devices.

Cyber-security tools.

Infrastructure appliances.

But business adoption should be deliberate.

You need to consider:

Management.

Security.

Backups.

Encryption.

Applications.

Support.

User skills.

Integration with the wider environment.

Putting Linux onto an old laptop because Windows feels slow is one thing.

Deploying twenty Linux laptops into a Microsoft-centric business is an IT strategy.

Those decisions deserve different levels of planning.

Don't Throw Useful Hardware Away Too Quickly

An old laptop isn't automatically a bad laptop.

Sometimes it simply has an operating system and workload that no longer suit its hardware.

A lightweight Linux distribution can reduce overhead, provide a modern supported operating system and extend the useful life of equipment that might otherwise become electronic waste.

But Linux isn't magic.

The browser still needs RAM.

The processor still has limits.

A worn battery remains worn.

And incompatible business software remains incompatible.

So choose the distribution based on the hardware and what you actually need the computer to do.

For many older machines, start with Linux Mint Xfce.

For slightly stronger hardware, try Mint Cinnamon.

For particularly constrained machines, look at Lubuntu.

Test it from USB.

Check the hardware.

Fit an SSD where worthwhile.

And then decide whether that forgotten laptop has another few years left in it.
