Open:

Settings > Apps > Video playback

Windows exposes settings that can influence how compatible applications handle video, including battery-related preferences and HDR playback options on supported displays.

Review whether Windows is configured to:

  • Optimise video for quality
  • Reduce resolution or processing to save battery
  • Stream HDR video
  • Automatically process video to enhance it

The exact controls depend on the computer, graphics hardware, display and installed Windows version.

Test the affected video with any enhancement or battery-saving option temporarily disabled. Restart the player after changing the setting.

If the problem occurs only on battery power, connect the charger and compare playback again.

Check HDR and Colour Settings

HDR content can appear:

  • Too dark
  • Washed out
  • Oversaturated
  • Black
  • Unusually dim
  • Jerky during playback

Open:

Settings > System > Display > HDR

Select the affected display and review:

Toggle browser hardware acceleration

In most browsers, search the settings for:

Hardware acceleration

Turn it off, restart the browser and test.

Playback worsens when acceleration is disabled

The processor may be struggling to decode the stream without GPU assistance.

Do not permanently disable acceleration across every application because of one temporary browser fault.

Open a private or incognito window and test the same video.

If playback improves, disable extensions involving:

Check Whether the Video File Is Complete

A partially downloaded or interrupted file may:

  • Stop at the same point
  • Have missing audio
  • Freeze during seeking
  • Play with incorrect duration
  • Produce blocky sections
  • Fail in every player

  • Whether the source provides a checksum

Download or copy the file again from the original source.

Play the file from the beginning, then jump to several positions.

Remuxing

Remuxing moves existing video and audio streams into another container without changing their compression.

MKV container → MP4 container

while retaining:

H.264 video

AAC audio

Remuxing is usually fast and does not reduce image quality.

It can help when:

  • The streams are supported but the container is not
  • The file index is damaged
  • A particular application requires MP4
  • The player handles one container more reliably

It will not help when the actual codec is unsupported.

Re-encoding

Re-encoding decodes the existing media and creates new compressed streams.

For example:

HEVC video → H.264 video

DTS audio → AAC audio

This can improve compatibility but may:

  • Take considerable time
  • Reduce quality
  • Increase or decrease file size
  • Require substantial CPU or GPU resources
  • Remove metadata, subtitles or additional audio tracks

Use reputable conversion software from its official publisher.

Preserve the original file until the converted version has been checked fully.

Choose Compatible Export Settings

For broad playback compatibility, a common combination is:

Container: MP4

Video: H.264

Audio: AAC

However, the correct choice depends on:

  • Required quality
  • Resolution
  • Frame rate
  • File size
  • Editing requirements
  • Target device
  • Licensing and professional workflow

For modern high-efficiency storage, HEVC or AV1 may provide better compression, but older computers, televisions and applications may not decode them reliably.

Do not convert everything to one format without considering the intended use.

High Resolution, Bit Depth and Frame Rate Matter

Two videos using the same codec can require very different amounts of processing.

A PC that plays:

1080p H.264 at 30 fps

smoothly may struggle with:

4K HEVC 10-bit at 60 fps

or:

8K AV1

Demand increases with:

  • Higher resolution
  • Higher frame rate
  • Higher bitrate
  • 10-bit or 12-bit colour
  • HDR
  • Complex codec profiles
  • Multiple video layers
  • High-quality scaling

Check the file’s media information.

If the computer lacks hardware decoding for that exact format, the CPU may need to process the entire stream in software.

Variable Frame Rate Can Cause Problems

Phones, screen-recording applications and conferencing tools may create variable-frame-rate video.

Instead of storing every second with the same number of frames, the file changes its frame rate according to the content.

This can cause:

  • Audio drifting out of sync
  • Stuttering in editing applications
  • Incorrect timeline duration
  • Export problems
  • Smooth playback in one player but not another

A professional editing workflow may require converting the file to a constant frame rate before editing.

Do not confuse variable frame rate with ordinary performance stuttering. Check the file information before converting it.

Audio and Video Gradually Drift Apart

When sound begins correctly but becomes increasingly out of sync, possible causes include:

  • Variable-frame-rate video
  • Damaged timestamps

The offset remains constant

A fixed audio delay may have been introduced during recording or editing.

Some players provide temporary audio-delay controls, but the underlying file should be corrected if it will be distributed.

The offset becomes progressively worse

Suspect timestamp or variable-frame-rate problems.

Sound Is Distorted or Too Quiet

Check:

  • The selected audio track

A multichannel surround track can sound quiet or incomplete when it is downmixed badly to stereo.

In surround mixes, dialogue is commonly placed in the centre channel. If the centre channel is not being downmixed or played, you may hear:

  • Sound effects
  • Background noise

but little or no speech.

Set ordinary laptop or headphone playback to a stereo configuration unless the connected equipment genuinely supports surround sound.

Subtitles Can Affect Playback

  • Styled ASS or SSA subtitles
  • Multiple subtitle tracks
  • Image-based Blu-ray subtitles
  • Very large fonts or effects

Test with subtitles disabled.

If the video becomes smooth:

This is more common on older or low-powered PCs.

Check for Thermal Throttling

A laptop may begin playing smoothly and then stutter after several minutes as it becomes hot.

  • Fans running loudly
  • CPU or GPU speed falling
  • Playback worsening over time
  • The chassis becoming unusually hot
  • Smooth playback immediately after startup
  • Similar slowdowns in games or video calls

Use Task Manager or manufacturer diagnostics to review CPU and GPU behaviour.

Make sure:

  • Air vents are clear
  • The laptop is on a hard surface
  • The charger is appropriate
  • Power mode is suitable
  • Firmware and graphics drivers are current

Do not place the laptop on bedding or soft furniture while playing demanding video.

Check Storage Health

Stuttering that follows a file across multiple players can still be caused by storage.

Warning signs include:

  • Disk usage reaching 100%
  • Clicking from a hard drive
  • Frequent disconnects
  • File-copy errors
  • Extremely slow seeking
  • Corrupted files
  • Windows freezing during playback

Copy the file to a known-good internal SSD.

It plays smoothly from the SSD

Investigate the original drive, cable, enclosure or network path.

It still stutters

Storage is less likely to be the primary cause.

Back up immediately when a drive shows physical or read-error symptoms.

Run Windows System Repairs

When several players and media applications fail unexpectedly, repair Windows components.

Open Terminal as administrator and run:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

After it completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Restart Windows afterwards.

These commands can repair protected Windows files and the component store used by media features.

Renaming the file extension

Changing .mkv to .mp4 does not convert the contents.

Assuming no sound means a missing codec

Check the output device, Volume Mixer and audio track first.

Use the setting as a test, then repair the driver or configuration.

Blaming the internet for a local-file problem

A video stored on the SSD does not depend on broadband during playback.

Converting the only copy

Preserve the original before remuxing or re-encoding.

Downloading drivers from unofficial websites

Use Windows Update and the hardware manufacturer.

Ignoring a failing drive

Repeated playback attempts can worsen data loss.

Reinstalling Windows immediately

The fault may follow one video file or one unsupported audio track.
