C: Drive Full on Windows 11? Where the Space Actually Went
You open File Explorer and notice that the C: drive has turned red.
Windows may warn that storage is running low, updates may fail to install and applications can become slow or unstable. Yet when you look through Documents, Pictures and Downloads, there does not seem to be enough data to explain where all the space has gone.
That is because the visible files in your personal folders are only part of the story.
Windows 11 also uses storage for updates, temporary files, installed applications, system protection, virtual memory, hibernation, cloud files and hidden application data. A drive can therefore fill up even when you have not deliberately downloaded anything large.
The safest solution is to identify the real cause before deleting files at random.
Why a Full C: Drive Matters
Windows needs free space for more than storing documents.
It uses the system drive for:
- Windows updates
- Temporary working files
- Application caches
- Virtual memory
- Crash dumps
- Browser data
- Microsoft 365 files
- Antivirus updates
- System Restore
- Driver installation
- Feature-update rollback files
When free space becomes critically low, you may experience:
- Failed Windows updates
- Slow sign-in and shutdown
- Applications freezing
- OneDrive sync failures
- Outlook mailbox problems
- Inability to save files
- Missing restore points
- Browser crashes
- General performance problems
Microsoft recommends using Windows Storage settings and Storage Sense to identify and remove unnecessary temporary content rather than manually deleting unfamiliar system files.
Start With Windows Storage Settings
Open:
Settings > System > Storage
Allow Windows a moment to calculate how the drive is being used.
You should see categories such as:
- Installed apps
- Temporary files
- Documents
- Pictures
- OneDrive
- Other
- System & reserved
Select each category to investigate it.
This view is usually safer than opening the Windows folder and deleting anything that looks large. Microsoft’s Storage settings are specifically designed to show how capacity is divided and provide supported cleanup controls.
1. Windows Update Files
Windows updates can temporarily use several gigabytes of storage.
Space may be consumed by:
- Downloaded update packages
- Installation files
- Update caches
- Component-store changes
- Delivery Optimisation files
- Previous update versions
- Rollback data
After a large feature update, Windows may retain the previous installation for a limited period so you can return to the earlier version if something goes wrong.
Open:
Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files
Look for categories such as:
- Windows Update Cleanup
- Previous Windows installation
- Delivery Optimisation Files
- Temporary Windows installation files
Review each option carefully before selecting Remove files.
Deleting a previous Windows installation may remove your ability to roll back to the earlier build.
2. Temporary Files
Temporary files are created by Windows and applications while installing, updating or processing information.
They can include:
- Update leftovers
- Application installation files
- Browser caches
- Thumbnail caches
- Error reports
- Temporary internet files
- Diagnostic data
- DirectX shader caches
Windows can remove many of these through the Temporary files screen.
Avoid manually emptying unfamiliar folders inside C:\Windows, as some temporary-looking files may still be in use.
3. The Downloads Folder
Downloads is one of the most common places for large forgotten files.
It may contain:
- Windows installation images
- Application installers
- ZIP archives
- Video files
- Email attachments
- Duplicate downloads
- Driver packages
- Old exports and backups
Open:
C:\Users\YourName\Downloads
Change the File Explorer view to Details, then sort by Size.
Do not automatically select Downloads when running Storage Sense unless you are comfortable with Windows deleting older files from that folder.
Downloads often contains files that have not been organised but are still required.
4. The Recycle Bin
Deleting a file does not necessarily free the space immediately.
Files remain in the Recycle Bin until it is emptied or Windows removes them under a configured Storage Sense rule.
Right-click Recycle Bin and select Empty Recycle Bin after confirming that nothing needs to be restored.
Large video files, virtual-machine disks and old backups can consume significant storage while sitting in the bin.
5. Installed Applications and Games
Applications can use far more space than expected.
Open:
Settings > Apps > Installed apps
Sort the list by Size.
Look for:
- Games no longer used
- Duplicate Microsoft 365 installations
- Old design or video-editing software
- Manufacturer utilities
- Trial software
- Previous versions of applications
- Large development tools
- Language packs
- Offline mapping data
Application sizes shown in Windows are not always exact, particularly when the software stores additional data elsewhere.
Use the application’s official uninstaller rather than deleting its folder manually.
6. Game Libraries and Downloaded Content
Modern games can use tens or hundreds of gigabytes.
They may also retain:
- High-resolution texture packs
- Workshop content
- Replay recordings
- Shader caches
- Multiple language packs
- Old game versions
- Download caches
Check libraries used by:
- Xbox
- Steam
- Epic Games
- EA
- Ubisoft
- Battle.net
Many launchers allow games to be moved to another internal drive without downloading them again.
Do not simply drag an installed game folder to another location unless the launcher supports that process.
7. OneDrive Files That Are Also Stored Locally
OneDrive files can appear to be in the cloud while still occupying space on the C: drive.
Status icons are useful:
- A blue cloud generally indicates an online-only file.
- A green tick indicates a locally available copy.
- A solid green circle means the file is set to remain on the device.
To release local space while retaining a file in OneDrive:
- Right-click the file or folder.
- Select Free up space.
The item should remain visible in File Explorer but become online-only. Microsoft confirms that Files On-Demand can return downloaded files to online-only status without removing the cloud copy.
Do not use this for files that must remain available without an internet connection.
8. Desktop, Documents and Pictures Backed Up by OneDrive
OneDrive folder backup may redirect Desktop, Documents and Pictures into the OneDrive folder.
This can make it difficult to tell whether files are local, online or both.
Open OneDrive settings and check:
Sync and backup > Manage backup
Also review whether entire folders have been marked:
Always keep on this device
A large photo or project library can occupy the full amount locally even though it is also synchronised to the cloud.
9. Outlook Data and Email Attachments
Outlook may store a substantial offline copy of your mailbox on the C: drive.
Depending on the configuration, this can include:
- Attachments
- Calendar data
- Shared mailboxes
- Public folders
- Several years of cached mail
Outlook data files are commonly located within the user’s AppData folder.
Large mailboxes, several connected accounts or shared mailboxes can consume tens of gigabytes.
Do not delete Outlook .ost or .pst files without understanding the difference:
- An .ost is usually a synchronised offline cache.
- A .pst may contain the only copy of archived or locally stored email.
Your IT provider can reduce the amount of mail cached offline or move appropriately managed archives.
10. Teams, Browsers and Application Caches
Applications store caches to improve performance.
Common examples include:
- Microsoft Teams
- Edge
- Chrome
- Adobe applications
- Design tools
- Video-editing software
- Mapping applications
- Communication platforms
Caches may contain:
- Downloaded media
- Meeting backgrounds
- Temporary recordings
- Website data
- Update packages
- Thumbnails
- Logs
Most applications offer a supported way to clear cached data. Use that method rather than deleting random AppData folders.
Clearing browser caches can sign you out of websites or remove offline information.
11. The AppData Folder
Each Windows user has a hidden AppData folder:
C:\Users\YourName\AppData
It stores application settings, caches, local databases, browser profiles and temporary information.
AppData can grow very large because it may contain:
- Outlook data
- Teams caches
- Browser profiles
- Application installers
- Logs
- Software update files
- Creative-application caches
- Phone backups
- Local cloud-sync data
Do not delete AppData wholesale.
Applications depend on it, and deleting the wrong folder can remove settings, saved sessions, local email or application data.
Investigate which application owns the space and use its cleanup or reset process.
12. Hibernation File
Windows may create a hidden file named:
C:\hiberfil.sys
This file supports hibernation and can also be used by Fast Startup.
Its size is related to the computer’s memory and system configuration, so machines with substantial RAM may have a large hibernation file.
When hibernation is genuinely unnecessary, it can be disabled from an elevated Terminal with:
powercfg.exe /hibernate off
This removes the hibernation file.
However, disabling hibernation also disables related functionality and can affect hybrid sleep. Microsoft warns that making hibernation unavailable can create data-loss risks in certain hybrid-sleep situations following a power failure.
Do not disable it on business laptops without considering how users work.
To restore hibernation, run:
powercfg.exe /hibernate on
13. Page File and Virtual Memory
Windows uses a hidden file named:
C:\pagefile.sys
The page file supports virtual memory and can also be required for crash dumps.
Its size may increase depending on:
- Installed RAM
- Application workload
- Crash-dump configuration
- Windows memory-management decisions
Do not delete pagefile.sys manually.
Disabling the page file as a storage-saving shortcut can cause application instability and prevent Windows from recording useful crash information.
In most environments, allowing Windows to manage its size automatically is safest.
14. System Restore Points
System Protection can use drive space to store restore points and shadow-copy information.
These help return Windows system files, drivers and registry settings to an earlier state.
To check its allocation:
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Select the C: drive.
- Choose Configure.
- Review Disk Space Usage.
You can reduce the maximum allocation or delete existing restore points, but doing so removes recovery options.
Do not disable System Protection merely to gain a small amount of space unless you have a stronger recovery strategy.
15. System & Reserved Storage
The System & reserved category can appear surprisingly large.
It may include:
- Windows system files
- Reserved storage
- Virtual memory
- Hibernation
- System Restore
- Recovery files
- Fonts and language components
Reserved storage is used so Windows can install updates and maintain system functions even when the drive is becoming full.
Not all of this category is removable, and it should not be treated as wasted space.
The useful approach is to expand the category in Storage settings and identify which component accounts for most of it.
16. Windows Component Store
The Windows component store, commonly associated with the WinSxS folder, maintains files required for servicing, updates and optional Windows features.
File Explorer can overstate its apparent size because Windows uses links between files.
Do not delete files from WinSxS manually.
Use supported Windows servicing and cleanup tools instead.
An elevated Terminal can analyse the component store with:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /AnalyzeComponentStore
Where Windows recommends cleanup, use:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
Avoid more aggressive commands unless you understand how they affect update rollback and component removal.
17. Windows Error Reports and Crash Dumps
When Windows or an application crashes, diagnostic files may be saved.
These can include:
- Small memory dumps
- Kernel dumps
- Full memory dumps
- Windows Error Reporting archives
- Application crash reports
A full dump can be very large, particularly on a computer with substantial RAM.
Common locations include:
C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP
and:
C:\Windows\Minidump
Do not delete recent crash dumps while an unresolved stability problem is being investigated. They may contain the evidence needed to identify the cause.
Once the issue has been resolved and the files are no longer needed, they can usually be removed through supported cleanup options.
18. Delivery Optimisation
Windows can use Delivery Optimisation to download and share update content efficiently.
Its cache can sometimes occupy noticeable space.
Open:
Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files
Review Delivery Optimisation Files.
Deleting the cache does not uninstall Windows updates. Windows will download any required content again later.
19. Old User Profiles
Computers used by several employees may retain local profiles for people who no longer use the device.
Each profile can contain:
- Desktop files
- Downloads
- Outlook caches
- Browser data
- Teams caches
- OneDrive content
- Application settings
Profiles are usually stored beneath:
C:\Users
Do not delete a user-profile folder manually.
Use the supported profile-removal process, and first confirm that:
- The user no longer needs the profile
- Important files are synchronised or backed up
- Outlook archives have been checked
- Business application data is preserved
- The account can be recreated if necessary
Managed organisations can use Intune or other tooling to control profile retention.
20. Phone and Tablet Backups
Applications used to manage phones or tablets may store full device backups on the C: drive.
A single backup can be tens or hundreds of gigabytes.
Check software associated with:
- iPhone or iPad backups
- Android device transfers
- Photography tools
- Media libraries
Use the application itself to review and remove obsolete backups.
Make sure the backup is genuinely old and not the only recoverable copy of the device’s data.
21. Virtual Machines
Hyper-V, VMware and other virtualisation products store virtual hard disks that can grow very large.
Typical files include:
- .vhd
- .vhdx
- .vmdk
- Checkpoints or snapshots
- Saved states
- Installation ISO files
A virtual machine that appears small inside its guest operating system can still consume significant host storage.
Use the virtualisation platform to merge checkpoints, move storage or remove unused machines.
Deleting virtual-disk files directly can permanently destroy the virtual machine.
22. Backup Software Saving Backups to C:
A backup saved to the same physical drive as the original data is not an effective protection against drive failure.
Yet some backup applications are accidentally configured to store:
- System images
- Local backup sets
- Database backups
- Email archives
- Phone backups
on the C: drive.
Check backup-software destinations and retention policies.
Backups should normally be stored on separate protected storage or an appropriate cloud service.
23. Log Files Growing Out of Control
Applications and Windows services create logs for diagnostics.
A fault can cause logs to grow rapidly when the same error is recorded thousands of times.
Possible locations include:
- ProgramData
- AppData
- Application installation folders
- Windows logs
- Web-server logs
- Database logs
- Security-product logs
Deleting the log may only provide temporary relief if the underlying fault continues.
Identify which application is producing it and correct the problem or retention policy.
24. Shadow Copies and Backup Snapshots
Volume Shadow Copy is used by System Restore, backup tools and some server-style applications.
Hidden snapshots can consume more space than visible folders suggest.
Do not use undocumented commands to delete shadow copies without understanding which recovery or backup system depends on them.
Check System Protection and the relevant backup software first.
25. Duplicate Files
Duplicate copies commonly appear after:
- Data migrations
- OneDrive conflicts
- Restoring backups
- Copying an old computer
- Exporting photographs
- Repeated downloads
- Renaming project folders
Before using a duplicate-file utility, confirm how it decides which copy should be deleted.
Files with the same name may contain different versions.
Business documents should be reviewed through controlled retention and document-management processes rather than deleted purely because their filenames match.
Turn On Storage Sense
Storage Sense can automatically remove selected unnecessary items.
Open:
Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense
You can configure it to manage:
- Temporary files
- Recycle Bin content
- Downloads, where selected
- Locally available OneDrive files
Microsoft states that Storage Sense can remove temporary files and Recycle Bin items automatically, and can work with OneDrive Files On-Demand to return unused local copies to online-only status.
Review the settings before enabling automation.
In particular, check any rule affecting Downloads or cloud files.
Use Cleanup Recommendations
Windows 11 may display:
Settings > System > Storage > Cleanup recommendations
This can identify:
- Temporary files
- Large or unused files
- Cloud-synchronised files
- Unused applications
Treat these as recommendations, not instructions.
Open and review important files before deleting them.
Find Large Files in File Explorer
Open File Explorer and select This PC or the relevant folder.
In the search box, you can search by size or sort the results after using a broad search.
Useful areas to review include:
- Downloads
- Videos
- Desktop
- Documents
- ISO files
- ZIP archives
- Virtual-machine files
- Backup folders
Do not run a search that causes a busy production machine to index millions of files during working hours without considering the performance effect.
Use a Trusted Disk-Usage Tool Carefully
A reputable disk-usage analyser can show folders and files by size more clearly than Windows Storage settings.
This can be useful when the missing space is inside:
- AppData
- ProgramData
- User profiles
- Virtual machines
- Application caches
Run the tool with appropriate permissions so that its totals are accurate.
Do not use its delete function impulsively. Use it to identify the owner of the space, then remove the content through the relevant application or supported Windows process.
Avoid unknown “PC cleaner” tools that promise to delete system files automatically.
What Not to Delete Manually
Avoid manually deleting:
- The Windows folder
- WinSxS
- System32
- Page files
- Hibernation files
- Recovery partitions
- ProgramData folders you do not recognise
- AppData in bulk
- Outlook data files
- Virtual-machine disks
- System Restore data
- Driver folders
- Hidden partitions
A large file is not necessarily unnecessary.
The consequences of deleting the wrong system or business-data file can be far greater than the inconvenience of low storage.

When you free several gigabytes and the drive quickly fills again, look for an active process rather than continuing to delete files.
