C: Drive Full on Windows 11? Here’s Where the Space Actually Went
You open File Explorer and notice that your C: drive has turned red.
Windows starts warning about low storage.
Updates may fail. Applications can become unstable. OneDrive may struggle to synchronise.
Yet when you check:
Documents
Pictures
Downloads
there does not seem to be enough data to explain why the drive is nearly full.
That is because Windows uses the C: drive for far more than your visible documents.
Storage can disappear into:
Windows updates
temporary files
applications and games
OneDrive files stored locally
Outlook data
application caches
user profiles
hibernation
virtual memory
restore points
Windows recovery files
virtual machines
backups
The safest approach is:
find what is using the space first, then remove it through the correct tool.
Do not start deleting random folders from C:\Windows.
Start With Windows Storage
Open:
Settings > System > Storage
Give Windows a moment to calculate usage.
You should see categories such as:
Installed apps
Temporary files
Documents
Pictures
Other
System & reserved
This should be your first diagnostic screen.
Microsoft recommends using Windows Storage and Storage Sense to identify unnecessary content instead of manually removing unfamiliar system files. (support.microsoft.com)
The biggest category usually tells you where to investigate next.
1. Temporary Files and Windows Update Cleanup
Open:
Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files
Windows may show items such as:
Windows Update Cleanup
Delivery Optimisation Files
Temporary files
Recycle Bin
Previous Windows installation
Downloads
Review them individually.
Do not simply tick everything.
The most important warning concerns:
Previous Windows installation(s)
After a major Windows upgrade, Windows may retain the old installation so you can roll back if something goes wrong.
Microsoft confirms that Windows.old can be removed through the Temporary Files screen, but doing so removes that rollback option. (support.microsoft.com)
If the new Windows version has been stable and you definitely do not need to go back, this can recover significant storage.
2. Turn On Storage Sense
Windows 11 includes:
Storage Sense
which can automatically remove certain temporary content.
Go to:
Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense
Microsoft says Storage Sense can automatically manage:
temporary files
Recycle Bin content
locally available cloud files
according to your configured rules. (support.microsoft.com)
One important detail:
Storage Sense works on the system drive—normally C:.
That makes it particularly useful for exactly this problem.
Be Careful With Downloads
Storage Sense can be configured to remove old files from:
Downloads
but Microsoft leaves this disabled unless you choose to enable it. (support.microsoft.com)
That is sensible.
Downloads often contains:
installers
ZIP files
customer exports
PDFs
device drivers
temporary backups
that may still be required.
Review it manually first.
3. Installed Apps and Games
Open:
Settings > Apps > Installed apps
Sort by:
Size
Large applications can include:
games
Adobe applications
development tools
CAD software
video editors
old software versions
Modern games can easily consume:
50–200 GB+
each.
If you no longer need something, uninstall it through:
Settings
or the application's own installer.
Do not simply delete its folder from:
C:\Program Files
because Windows may retain:
services
drivers
registry entries
application data
Use the supported uninstall process.
4. OneDrive Can Still Use Local Disk Space
Seeing a file in OneDrive does not automatically mean it exists only in the cloud.
In File Explorer:
Blue cloud
Online-only.
Uses very little local storage.
Green tick
Downloaded locally.
Uses disk space.
Solid green circle
Set to:
Always keep on this device
and therefore deliberately stored locally.
Microsoft confirms that Files On-Demand lets you right-click locally available OneDrive content and select:
Free up space
to return it to online-only status while keeping the cloud copy. (support.microsoft.com)
This can recover a surprisingly large amount of storage.
For example, an employee may have:
150 GB of SharePoint/OneDrive project files
synchronised locally even though they only need occasional access.
Don't Free Up Files You Need Offline
An online-only file requires internet access before it can be opened.
So do not make:
field documents
travel files
offline project material
cloud-only if the user genuinely needs them without connectivity.
5. Desktop, Documents and Pictures May Be Inside OneDrive
OneDrive Folder Backup can move:
Desktop
Documents
Pictures
into the user's OneDrive structure.
That can make it difficult to understand what is:
in the cloud
and:
physically downloaded to C:.
Open OneDrive settings and check:
Sync and backup > Manage backup
Then look for folders marked:
Always keep on this device
A large photo or project library can occupy the full local size even though it is also synchronised online. The current Hamilton Group article already highlights this correctly. (hgmssp.com)
6. Outlook Can Use Tens of Gigabytes
Outlook may store a local cache of your Microsoft 365 mailbox.
That can include:
attachments
shared mailboxes
calendars
public folders
The relevant data often sits under the user profile in AppData.
Large mailboxes and several shared mailboxes can consume substantial storage.
Do not randomly delete:
.pst
or:
.ost
files.
An OST is normally a synchronised cache.
A PST can contain email that exists nowhere else.
For Microsoft 365 environments, reducing offline cache duration may be more appropriate than deleting mail data manually.
7. AppData Is Often the Hidden Culprit
Windows users have a hidden folder:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData
Applications use it for:
caches
local databases
browser profiles
update packages
logs
Teams data
creative-software caches
It can become very large.
But do not delete AppData wholesale.
You could remove:
application configuration
locally stored email
sessions
saved data
Instead, identify the application responsible.
Then use that application's supported:
cleanup
reset
cache-management
option.
8. Hibernation Can Consume Several Gigabytes
Windows may create:
C:\hiberfil.sys
This supports:
hibernation
related power functions such as Fast Startup
Its size is related to system memory and configuration.
A PC with a large amount of RAM can therefore have a substantial hibernation file.
If hibernation is genuinely unnecessary, an administrator can disable it:
powercfg.exe /hibernate off
That removes hiberfil.sys.
To restore it:
powercfg.exe /hibernate on
But do not do this merely to gain a few gigabytes on every laptop.
Microsoft still supports hibernation as a legitimate power mode, particularly for laptops that need to preserve state without battery use. (support.microsoft.com)
9. Do Not Delete the Page File
Another large hidden file can be:
C:\pagefile.sys
Windows uses the page file for:
virtual memory
application memory pressure
crash dumps
Do not delete it manually.
And do not disable virtual memory simply because:
“pagefile.sys is 12 GB.”
Windows normally manages it dynamically for good reasons.
Removing it can cause:
application crashes
out-of-memory errors
loss of crash-dump capability
Storage shortage should generally be fixed somewhere else first.
10. Check System Restore
Restore points consume disk space.
Search for:
Create a restore point
Select C:.
Choose:
Configure
You can see the maximum allocation reserved for System Protection.
You can reduce it or delete old restore points if absolutely necessary.
But remember what you are giving up:
recovery options.
Do not eliminate all restore capability merely to hide an undersized system drive.
11. Old User Profiles Can Be Huge
On shared or business PCs, check:
C:\Users
You may find profiles belonging to employees who left months ago.
A single profile can contain:
OneDrive caches
Outlook mail
Teams data
Downloads
browser profiles
application data
and consume tens of gigabytes.
Do not simply delete the folder.
First confirm that:
the employee no longer uses the PC
files are backed up/synchronised
PSTs and local archives have been checked
business application data is preserved
Then remove the profile through supported Windows or management tooling.
12. Virtual Machines and Phone Backups Can Be Enormous
Look for specialist workloads.
Hyper-V, VMware and similar platforms can store:
VHD
VHDX
VMDK
checkpoints
snapshots
installation ISOs
A single VM can use hundreds of gigabytes.
Likewise, local:
iPhone backups
iPad backups
system images
can be huge.
Use the relevant application to manage and remove them.
Do not manually delete virtual-machine files unless you fully understand the consequences.
What About WinSxS?
You may use a disk-analysis tool and discover:
C:\Windows\WinSxS
appears enormous.
Do not delete files from it manually.
Windows uses WinSxS as its component store for servicing the operating system.
If you need to investigate it, run an elevated Terminal:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /AnalyzeComponentStore
If Windows reports that cleanup is recommended:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup
Microsoft documents component-store analysis and supported cleanup through DISM. (learn.microsoft.com)
I would not recommend /ResetBase as a normal blog cleanup step because it removes the ability to uninstall superseded updates.
Use standard component cleanup first.
Don't Delete C:\Windows\Installer
This is another folder that often looks suspiciously large.
Do not manually empty it.
Windows Installer may need those files later to:
repair applications
update software
uninstall packages
Removing them can cause future software maintenance failures.
A folder being large does not make it disposable.
Why the C: Drive Keeps Filling Again
If you free 30 GB and the drive is nearly full again two weeks later, stop repeating cleanup.
Find the source of the growth.
Common causes include:
runaway application logs
large Outlook caches
repeated backup files
OneDrive content downloading locally
application caches
VM checkpoints
update failures
user-profile growth
Record:
free space today
then check again after:
one day
one week
If usage continues rising rapidly, investigate the growing category.
The objective is not:
“keep cleaning C:.”
It is:
“find what keeps filling C:.”
When the Drive Is Simply Too Small
Sometimes there is no software fault.
A Windows 11 business laptop with:
128 GB storage
may simply be undersized once you add:
Windows
Microsoft 365
Outlook cache
Teams
OneDrive
business software
updates
Repeatedly deleting temporary files is not a long-term storage strategy.
At that point consider:
larger SSD
moving appropriate data
more cloud-only content
device replacement
Storage requirements should match the real workload.
The Fastest Cleanup Order
If C: is nearly full, I would work in this order:
1. Open Settings > System > Storage.
2. Identify the largest category.
3. Review Temporary files.
4. Remove safe Windows Update leftovers.
5. Review Downloads and Recycle Bin.
6. Sort installed apps by size.
7. Check OneDrive local availability.
8. Review old user profiles.
9. Investigate Outlook/AppData if user data is unusually large.
10. Check hibernation and System Restore only if necessary.
11. Check VMs, backups and specialist application data.
12. Use DISM only when the Windows component store is genuinely large.
13. If storage keeps growing, identify the recurring source.
14. Upgrade the drive if the machine is simply undersized.
The key principle is:
Use Windows and each application's supported cleanup tools rather than deleting folders because they look large.
