You open:

Settings > Bluetooth & devices

and the Bluetooth switch has vanished.

Not greyed out.

Not refusing to connect.

Completely gone.

Perhaps the Bluetooth tile is missing from Quick Settings too, and devices that worked yesterday no longer appear.

That is different from:

“My headphones won’t pair.”

If Windows has lost the Bluetooth control entirely, the problem is usually further down the stack:

Bluetooth radio → driver → Windows detection → Settings

The fastest approach is to find out whether Windows can still see the Bluetooth hardware at all. Microsoft’s current guidance for Bluetooth disappearing from Windows follows exactly that approach.

First: Does This PC Actually Have Bluetooth?

If this is a newly built desktop, refurbished PC or recently replaced machine, verify that the hardware genuinely includes Bluetooth.

Microsoft specifically recommends checking the computer’s specifications when Bluetooth is missing because some Windows devices simply do not include a Bluetooth radio.

This is especially common with desktops.

A motherboard may support Wi-Fi but not Bluetooth, or a system may rely on:

USB Bluetooth adapter

optional Wi-Fi/Bluetooth card

docking accessory


If Bluetooth definitely worked on this same PC previously, continue.

Step 1: Restart Windows Properly

Use:

Start > Power > Restart

Do not just close the laptop lid.

Windows contains Bluetooth radio recovery mechanisms designed to recover some hardware and connectivity failures automatically, but a proper restart remains useful when the radio or driver has become unresponsive.

After restarting, check:

Settings > Bluetooth & devices

If Bluetooth immediately returns and remains stable, the fault may have been temporary.

If it disappears again, continue investigating rather than accepting frequent restarts as the permanent solution.

Step 2: Check Airplane Mode and Any Hardware Wireless Switch

Open Quick Settings and confirm:

Airplane mode = Off

Also check whether the laptop has:

wireless function key

hardware radio switch

vendor utility controlling wireless radios


The exact behaviour varies by manufacturer.

If both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth vanished simultaneously, a wider wireless-radio issue becomes more likely than a Bluetooth-only software problem. The live Hamilton Group article already identifies airplane mode and hardware radio control as legitimate causes worth checking early.

Step 3: Open Device Manager

Right-click Start and select:

Device Manager

Now look for:

Bluetooth

This is the most useful diagnostic fork.

Microsoft’s current Bluetooth-disappeared guidance tells users to check Device Manager and locate the Bluetooth adapter, whose name may include the word radio.

Bluetooth Category Is Present

Good.

Windows still sees at least part of the Bluetooth stack.

Expand it.

Look for an actual radio such as:

Intel Wireless Bluetooth

Realtek Bluetooth Adapter

MediaTek Bluetooth Adapter

Generic Bluetooth Adapter


Ignore entries such as Bluetooth enumerators for the moment.

Right-click the actual adapter and open:

Properties > General

Read:

Device status

If you see a numbered error such as:

Code 10

or:

Code 43

record it before doing anything else.

The Device Manager code gives you a much better diagnosis than simply knowing the Settings toggle disappeared.

Step 4: If the Adapter Is Disabled, Enable It

If Device Manager shows the Bluetooth radio with a downward arrow or disabled state:

Right-click it and choose:

Enable device

Then check Settings again.

If the device immediately disables itself or returns with an error code, there is a deeper problem involving:

driver

firmware

power

hardware


Do not repeatedly enable it without investigating why it will not stay active.

Step 5: Show Hidden Devices

In Device Manager:

View > Show hidden devices

Look again under:

Bluetooth

and also consider:

Network adapters

or:

Unknown devices

depending on the hardware.

A greyed-out Bluetooth adapter can indicate Windows remembers the device but it is not currently present.

That is an important distinction.

Bluetooth adapter visible but greyed out

Windows has previously known about it but cannot currently detect it normally.

Investigate:

power state

driver

BIOS/UEFI

hardware


No Bluetooth radio anywhere

Now hardware detection becomes more interesting.

Step 6: Update the Bluetooth Driver

If the adapter is present but malfunctioning, Microsoft recommends updating the Bluetooth driver through Device Manager.

Open:

Device Manager > Bluetooth > Bluetooth adapter > Update driver

Start with:

Search automatically for drivers

Also check:

Settings > Windows Update

and appropriate:

Optional updates

For a business laptop, I would also check the computer manufacturer’s approved driver package.

Examples include:

Dell

HP

Lenovo

Microsoft Surface

ASUS

Acer


That matters because Bluetooth is often integrated into a combined Wi-Fi/Bluetooth module and may depend on chipset or platform-specific drivers.

Step 7: If the Problem Started After an Update, Roll Back the Driver

Updating is not always the correct answer.

If:

Bluetooth worked yesterday

then:

Windows or the manufacturer installed a new Bluetooth driver

and:

Bluetooth disappeared today

check:

Device Manager > Bluetooth adapter > Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver

Microsoft currently documents driver rollback as a supported Bluetooth troubleshooting step.

If rollback restores Bluetooth immediately, you have useful evidence that the newer driver caused the problem.

Do not install several different drivers at once.

Change one thing and test.

Step 8: Reinstall the Bluetooth Adapter

If the adapter is present but the driver appears corrupted, reinstalling it can help.

In Device Manager:

1. Right-click the Bluetooth adapter.


2. Choose Uninstall device.


3. Confirm.


4. Restart Windows.

 

Microsoft says Windows should attempt to reinstall the driver after restart; if it does not, Device Manager can use Scan for hardware changes.

This is a supported troubleshooting step.

Before doing this on a business laptop, I would still make sure you know where to obtain the manufacturer’s Bluetooth driver if Windows does not reinstall it correctly.

Step 9: Run the Windows Bluetooth Troubleshooter

Windows 11 now routes Bluetooth troubleshooting through the Get Help application.

Microsoft recommends starting with the automated Bluetooth troubleshooter because it can diagnose and attempt to fix common Bluetooth problems automatically.

This is worth running.

But if Device Manager does not detect a Bluetooth radio at all, do not expect a troubleshooter to repair physically absent hardware.

Use it as part of the process—not as a substitute for checking hardware detection.

Step 10: Check the Bluetooth Support Service

Press:

Windows + R

and enter:

services.msc

Look for Bluetooth-related services.

A stopped service can contribute to Bluetooth functionality not behaving normally.

However, this is where I would simplify the existing article:

If the Bluetooth radio itself has disappeared from Device Manager, restarting a Bluetooth service is unlikely to make physically undetected hardware reappear.

Services become more relevant when the adapter is detected but Windows’ Bluetooth functionality is not operating properly.

That diagnostic order matters.

Step 11: Check BIOS or UEFI

If Bluetooth has vanished completely from Device Manager, verify that the internal wireless/Bluetooth device has not been disabled in firmware.

Restart the computer and enter the manufacturer’s BIOS/UEFI setup.

Look for settings involving:

Wireless

Bluetooth

WLAN

Internal devices

Radio devices


Do not change unrelated BIOS settings.

If Bluetooth is disabled there, enable it and boot back into Windows.

If it is already enabled, continue.

Wi-Fi Still Works but Bluetooth Is Missing

This is possible even when Wi-Fi and Bluetooth share the same physical module.

A combined wireless card often presents Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to the system through different interfaces and drivers.

So you can have:

Wi-Fi working perfectly

while:

Bluetooth has disappeared.

That does not automatically rule out a hardware problem with the combined wireless card.

It does, however, make a total loss of the module less obvious.

Both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Disappeared

Now suspect something broader.

Possible causes include:

BIOS/UEFI setting

wireless module failure

loose internal card

motherboard issue

firmware/power problem


If both radios vanished from Device Manager at the same time, reinstalling only the Bluetooth driver may be treating the wrong layer.

USB Bluetooth Adapter? Test the USB Side

If your PC uses an external USB Bluetooth adapter:

1. Remove it.


2. Restart Windows.


3. Connect it directly to another USB port.


4. Avoid a hub initially.


5. Check Device Manager.

 

If possible, test the adapter on another computer.

Works elsewhere

Investigate the original PC’s:

USB port

driver

Windows configuration


Fails everywhere

The adapter itself becomes much more suspicious.

Desktop PC? Check the Antennas Too

Many desktop motherboards use external antennas for both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

A missing antenna usually does not make Bluetooth disappear from Windows entirely.

But it can make:

pairing unreliable

range extremely poor

connections drop constantly


So:

Bluetooth missing from Settings

and:

Bluetooth signal is terrible

are different symptoms.

Do not troubleshoot weak signal by repeatedly reinstalling the driver.

Power-State Problems Can Matter

Bluetooth can sometimes disappear after:

Sleep

Hibernate

docking/undocking

low-power state

firmware transition


If a full shutdown and cold start restores Bluetooth but an ordinary restart does not—or Bluetooth consistently disappears after Sleep—that points towards a potential power/firmware/driver interaction.

Microsoft’s Bluetooth radio recovery architecture specifically exists to handle cases where the radio becomes unresponsive or loses connectivity because of lower-level failures.

For persistent cases, check:

BIOS updates

chipset drivers

Bluetooth driver

manufacturer firmware


rather than merely toggling the Settings switch.

Don't Start by Editing the Registry

There are plenty of guides suggesting obscure Registry edits for missing Bluetooth.

I would avoid that entirely as a first-line approach.

If Windows cannot detect the radio, the useful questions are:

Does Device Manager see it?

Does firmware see/enable it?

Does the driver load?

Does another operating state/device detect it?

Registry changes rarely repair a failed radio or missing USB interface.

Don't Download Random Bluetooth Drivers

Another common mistake is searching:

Bluetooth driver download Windows 11

and installing the first package from an unofficial driver website.

Do not do this.

Use:

1. Windows Update


2. PC manufacturer


3. component manufacturer where appropriate

 

A generic driver may install successfully but still be wrong for the exact hardware revision.

When Does Hardware Failure Become Likely?

Hardware becomes increasingly likely when:

Bluetooth is absent from Device Manager

Show hidden devices shows only an old greyed-out entry

reinstalling approved drivers changes nothing

BIOS reports the radio enabled

cold boot makes no difference

a USB Bluetooth adapter works while the internal one does not

Wi-Fi/Bluetooth module shows other signs of instability

manufacturer diagnostics identify a fault


At that point, replacing the wireless module or using a suitable USB Bluetooth adapter may be more practical than continually reinstalling drivers.

The Fastest Troubleshooting Order

If Bluetooth has disappeared completely from Windows 11:

1. Restart Windows properly.


2. Check Airplane Mode and hardware wireless controls.


3. Open Device Manager.


4. Determine whether the Bluetooth radio is actually present.


5. Read any Device Manager error code.


6. Enable the adapter if disabled.


7. Show hidden devices.


8. Update the approved Bluetooth driver.


9. Roll back if the problem began after a driver update.


10. Uninstall/reinstall the adapter if the driver appears damaged.


11. Run the Windows Bluetooth troubleshooter.


12. Check BIOS/UEFI if the radio is completely absent.


13. Test USB Bluetooth adapters on another port/device where relevant.


14. Suspect hardware only after Windows, firmware and driver evidence point there.

 

The key principle is:

If the Bluetooth switch is missing, stop troubleshooting the headphones. First prove that Windows can still see the Bluetooth radio.
