You open Settings > Bluetooth & devices, expecting to reconnect a mouse, headset or keyboard, but the Bluetooth switch has disappeared.

It may also be missing from Quick Settings, and Device Manager may no longer show a Bluetooth category at all.

This is different from an ordinary pairing problem.

When Bluetooth vanishes completely, Windows is usually no longer detecting or enabling the computer’s Bluetooth radio. Possible causes include:

  • Airplane mode or a hardware wireless switch
  • A temporary power or firmware fault
  • A disabled Bluetooth adapter
  • A missing, damaged or incompatible driver
  • A stopped Bluetooth service
  • A recent Windows or driver update
  • Bluetooth being disabled in BIOS or UEFI
  • A failed Wi-Fi/Bluetooth module
  • A loose internal card or antenna connection
  • A USB Bluetooth adapter that has disconnected or failed

Microsoft confirms that the Bluetooth toggle can disappear when Windows cannot detect or enable the feature. It identifies drivers, stopped services, recent updates and hardware faults among the likely causes. 

The correct approach is to determine whether the radio exists, Windows can see it and the correct driver is loaded.

First: Confirm What Is Actually Missing

Open:

Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices

Check whether you can see:

  • The main Bluetooth on/off switch
  • Devices
  • Add device
  • More Bluetooth settings

Then press:

Windows key + A

Check Quick Settings for the Bluetooth control.

Microsoft notes that when More Bluetooth settings is also absent, the computer may not have a detected Bluetooth adapter or the adapter’s driver may not be installed. 

There are three common situations.

The toggle is missing, but Bluetooth appears in Device Manager

Windows can still identify the radio, so the likely issue involves:

  • Driver state
  • Windows services
  • A disabled adapter
  • A recent update
  • Temporary radio configuration

Bluetooth is listed only as a hidden device

Windows remembers the adapter, but it is not currently detecting it as present.

This can point towards:

  • A radio that failed to initialise
  • A disabled firmware setting
  • A power-state problem
  • A disconnected USB adapter
  • Hardware failure

Bluetooth is absent everywhere

When there is no Bluetooth category, no toggle and no hidden adapter, Windows may have:

  • Lost the driver completely
  • Placed the hardware under Other devices
  • Failed to detect the radio
  • Had Bluetooth disabled at firmware level
  • Suffered a hardware failure

Do not start by deleting Registry entries or installing a generic driver-updater utility.

Step One: Check Airplane Mode

Airplane mode disables wireless radios, including Bluetooth.

Press:

Windows key + A

Make sure Airplane mode is off.

If it is already off:

  1. Turn Airplane mode on.
  2. Wait approximately ten seconds.
  3. Turn it off again.
  4. Check whether Bluetooth returns.

Microsoft specifically includes checking Airplane mode when the Bluetooth toggle has disappeared. 

Also check the laptop for:

  • A physical wireless switch
  • A function-key wireless control
  • A manufacturer privacy or radio-control button

The exact key varies by model. Look for an antenna, aircraft or wireless symbol.

Do not repeatedly press unfamiliar function keys without checking the laptop’s documentation, particularly on business devices with privacy or security controls.

Step Two: Restart Windows Properly

Select:

Start > Power > Restart

Use Restart rather than shutting down and switching the computer back on.

A restart can clear:

  • A driver that failed to load
  • A stuck radio state
  • An incomplete update
  • A temporary Plug and Play problem
  • A Bluetooth service fault

Microsoft recommends restarting Windows as one of the standard fixes when Bluetooth disappears. 

After Windows starts, allow a few minutes for drivers and services to load before checking Settings again.

Step Three: Perform a Full Power Reset

If an ordinary restart does not help, completely power the device down.

For a laptop:

  1. Shut Windows down.
  2. Disconnect the charger and docking station.
  3. Disconnect USB devices.
  4. Follow the manufacturer’s approved power-reset procedure.
  5. Reconnect power and start the computer.

For a desktop:

  1. Shut the computer down.
  2. Disconnect mains power.
  3. Disconnect unnecessary USB devices.
  4. Wait briefly.
  5. Reconnect power and restart.

A full power removal can help when an internal wireless module has remained in an unresponsive electrical state.

Some laptops have internal batteries, emergency-reset openings or model-specific procedures. Use the manufacturer’s service instructions rather than opening the computer or pressing an unidentified recessed button.

Step Four: Run the Bluetooth Troubleshooter

Windows 11 now directs Bluetooth troubleshooting through the Get Help application.

Open Start and search for:

Get Help

Then search within the application for:

Bluetooth troubleshooter

Follow the diagnostic steps.

Microsoft recommends starting with the automated Bluetooth troubleshooter when Bluetooth is missing or unavailable. Microsoft has also moved supported troubleshooters away from the older MSDT platform and into Get Help. 

The troubleshooter may check:

  • Whether Windows detects a Bluetooth adapter
  • Driver state
  • Bluetooth services
  • Radio configuration
  • Common Windows settings

Record any message it provides, especially if it says:

  • Bluetooth is unavailable
  • The device does not support Bluetooth
  • A driver is missing
  • A service could not be started
  • Hardware changes were detected

Step Five: Inspect Device Manager

Right-click Start and select:

Device Manager

Look for a category named:

Bluetooth

Expand it and look for an entry that may contain:

  • Bluetooth Adapter
  • Bluetooth Radio
  • Intel Wireless Bluetooth
  • Realtek Bluetooth Adapter
  • Qualcomm Bluetooth
  • MediaTek Bluetooth
  • Generic Bluetooth Adapter

Microsoft notes that the adapter’s name may include the word radio. 

The Bluetooth adapter has a downward arrow

A downward arrow normally indicates that the device has been disabled.

Right-click it and select:

Enable device

Restart Windows and check Settings again.

The adapter has a yellow warning symbol

Right-click the adapter and select:

Properties

On the General tab, record the Device status and any error code.

Possible codes may indicate:

  • A driver failed to start
  • Windows cannot find the hardware
  • The device cannot start
  • A required service or Registry entry is damaged
  • Windows has disabled the device after repeated failures

Do not repeatedly uninstall the adapter before recording the error code. The code may help distinguish a driver problem from hardware that is no longer present.

Bluetooth is not listed

Check these areas:

  • Network adapters
  • Other devices
  • Universal Serial Bus controllers
  • Unknown devices

Some combined wireless modules expose the Bluetooth portion through an internal USB interface. A failed driver may therefore appear as an unknown USB device rather than under Bluetooth.

Show Hidden Devices

In Device Manager, select:

View > Show hidden devices

Microsoft explains that Device Manager hides certain devices by default and that hidden entries can include devices that are not currently present. 

Expand Bluetooth again.

The Bluetooth adapter is faded or grey

A faded entry usually means Windows has a record of the device but does not currently consider it present.

This can happen when:

  • A USB Bluetooth adapter is unplugged
  • The internal radio failed to initialise
  • Bluetooth is disabled in firmware
  • The wireless module is failing
  • A docking or USB connection has changed

Do not assume the grey entry proves that the hardware is functioning.

Right-click it, open Properties and record:

  • Device status
  • Driver provider
  • Driver version
  • Hardware IDs where available

Scan for Hardware Changes

In Device Manager, select:

Action > Scan for hardware changes

Microsoft documents this option for asking Windows to rediscover devices and reinstall applicable hardware entries. 

If Bluetooth returns after the scan, restart the computer and check that it remains available after another boot.

If the radio repeatedly disappears, the underlying issue has not been resolved. Investigate:

  • Driver compatibility
  • Firmware
  • Power management
  • Hardware reliability

Step Six: Check Windows Update

Open:

Settings > Windows Update

Select:

Check for updates

Install available updates and restart.

Windows 11 distributes many recommended hardware drivers automatically through Windows Update. Microsoft also provides optional driver packages separately. 

Then open:

Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates

Check Driver updates for a package related to:

  • Bluetooth
  • Wireless
  • Intel
  • Realtek
  • Qualcomm
  • MediaTek
  • The computer manufacturer

Do not install every optional driver without reviewing it.

Install the Bluetooth or wireless package only when it matches the affected computer and adapter.

Step Seven: Update the Driver Through Device Manager

When the adapter is visible:

  1. Right-click the Bluetooth adapter.
  2. Select Update driver.
  3. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  4. Follow the instructions.
  5. Restart Windows.

Microsoft recommends this process for Bluetooth detection, pairing and connection problems. 

If Windows says:

The best drivers for your device are already installed

that means Device Manager did not select a preferable driver from the sources it checked. It does not guarantee that the computer manufacturer has not released a newer model-specific package. Microsoft recommends checking the PC manufacturer’s support site when Windows cannot find a suitable newer driver. 

Step Eight: Install the Manufacturer’s Bluetooth Driver

For laptops and branded desktops, use the support page for the exact model.

Identify the model with:

msinfo32

Look for:

  • System Manufacturer
  • System Model

You can also use the computer’s service tag, serial number or manufacturer-support application.

Download the current Windows 11 packages for:

  • Bluetooth
  • Wireless LAN
  • Chipset
  • USB or serial I/O
  • BIOS or UEFI, where relevant

Microsoft recommends obtaining the latest Bluetooth driver from the computer manufacturer when Windows Update cannot resolve the issue. 

Why install the Wi-Fi package as well?

Many laptops use a combined Wi-Fi and Bluetooth module.

The two functions can still use separate driver packages, but they share the physical card and may depend on related platform components.

Check the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Some vendors require:

  1. Chipset or platform drivers
  2. Wireless driver
  3. Bluetooth driver
  4. Restart

Do not download drivers from an unrelated “driver database” website.

Step Nine: Reinstall the Bluetooth Adapter

Use this when the adapter appears in Device Manager but updating it has not restored the Windows controls.

Before beginning:

  • Download the correct manufacturer driver.
  • Save open work.
  • Record the existing driver provider and version.
  • Make sure you have another way to control the PC if your keyboard or mouse uses Bluetooth.

Then:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Bluetooth.
  3. Right-click the main Bluetooth adapter.
  4. Select Uninstall device.
  5. Confirm the removal.
  6. Restart the computer.

Windows should attempt to reinstall an applicable driver automatically. Microsoft documents this procedure and states that Windows normally reinstalls the Bluetooth driver after restart. 

If it does not return:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
  3. Install the manufacturer’s driver manually.

Microsoft also recommends scanning for hardware changes when Windows does not reinstall the adapter automatically. 

Be careful with “Delete the driver software”

Some uninstall windows may offer to remove the driver package as well.

Do not select this automatically.

Removing the package may be appropriate when it is known to be damaged or incompatible, but you should already possess the correct replacement driver.

Step Ten: Roll Back a Recent Driver

When Bluetooth disappeared immediately after:

  • A Windows update
  • An optional driver update
  • A manufacturer update
  • A manual driver installation

try returning to the previous driver.

Open:

Device Manager > Bluetooth adapter > Properties > Driver

Select:

Roll Back Driver

Follow the prompts and restart.

Microsoft recommends driver rollback when Bluetooth worked before a recent Windows or driver update. The option is available only if Windows still retains the previous package. 

If the button is unavailable, install a known-good version from the PC manufacturer.

Do not use an arbitrarily old driver from an unofficial website.

Step Eleven: Check the Bluetooth Support Service

Press:

Windows key + R

Enter:

services.msc

Select OK.

Find:

Bluetooth Support Service

Right-click it and select:

Restart

Microsoft includes restarting the Bluetooth Support Service as a troubleshooting step for Bluetooth interruptions. 

If the service is stopped, try starting it.

Do not change several Bluetooth-related services to unusual startup types based on a generic guide. Windows may use per-user services and trigger-start behaviour that differs between builds and devices.

If the service:

  • Is missing
  • Will not start
  • Stops immediately
  • Reports a dependency error
  • Becomes stuck in Starting or Stopping

investigate Windows corruption, the driver installation and system event logs rather than continually forcing it to restart.

Step Twelve: Check BIOS or UEFI

Some computers allow internal radios to be disabled before Windows starts.

Firmware settings may be named:

  • Bluetooth
  • Internal Bluetooth
  • Wireless Device Enable
  • Wireless Radio Control
  • WLAN/Bluetooth
  • Integrated Devices
  • I/O Port Access

Enter BIOS or UEFI using the manufacturer’s documented procedure and confirm that Bluetooth is enabled.

Do not change unrelated settings such as:

  • Secure Boot
  • TPM
  • Storage controller mode
  • UEFI or Legacy boot mode
  • Virtualisation
  • RAID or AHCI

Record the original configuration before making changes.

A BIOS update or firmware reset can occasionally return wireless settings to defaults. If Bluetooth vanished immediately after firmware maintenance, check the radio controls first.

Step Thirteen: Check Manufacturer Wireless Controls

Some laptops include manufacturer software controlling:

  • Airplane mode
  • Wireless radios
  • Privacy settings
  • Battery profiles
  • Function keys
  • Docking behaviour

Check whether an application from the computer manufacturer is reporting Bluetooth as disabled.

Also verify that the required:

  • Hotkey driver
  • System interface driver
  • Power-management package
  • Wireless-control application

is installed.

Removing all manufacturer utilities as “bloatware” can sometimes remove the component responsible for exposing hardware controls correctly.

Step Fourteen: Disconnect Docks and USB Devices

A docking station or USB device can interfere with hardware detection.

Disconnect:

  • USB docks
  • External Bluetooth adapters
  • USB hubs
  • External wireless adapters
  • Unnecessary storage devices
  • Specialist USB equipment

Restart the computer with only:

  • Power
  • Keyboard and mouse where required
  • One display

If the internal Bluetooth radio returns, reconnect devices individually.

When using an external USB Bluetooth adapter, test it:

  • In another USB port
  • Without a hub
  • On another computer

If the USB adapter is not detected on another device, the adapter itself may have failed.

Step Fifteen: Check Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer

Open Reliability Monitor by pressing Windows key + R and entering:

perfmon /rel

Look for failures at the time Bluetooth disappeared.

Possible clues include:

  • Driver installation
  • Windows Update
  • Hardware error
  • Application failure
  • Unexpected shutdown
  • Manufacturer update failure

Then open Event Viewer and review:

Windows Logs > System

Focus on the exact time of the failure.

Look for repeated events involving:

  • Bluetooth
  • BTHUSB
  • Plug and Play
  • USB
  • Kernel-PnP
  • Device setup
  • Driver Frameworks
  • The wireless adapter

Do not assume every warning is relevant. Windows records many normal informational and warning events.

The useful evidence is an event that repeatedly coincides with the radio disappearing.

Step Sixteen: Repair Windows System Files

When services or device installation components appear damaged, open Terminal as administrator.

Run:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

After it completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Restart Windows.

These tools can repair Windows component-store and protected-system-file corruption. They cannot repair a physically failed Bluetooth module.

Use them when:

  • Bluetooth services are missing or broken
  • Device installation repeatedly fails
  • Other Windows components are also malfunctioning
  • The problem began after a failed update

Step Seventeen: Test With a Live Hardware Diagnostic

Many business laptops include preboot diagnostics.

Use the manufacturer’s diagnostic system to test:

  • Wireless module
  • Motherboard
  • USB controller
  • Hardware detection

Also check whether the Bluetooth radio appears in BIOS system information.

Bluetooth is visible in firmware but not Windows

This points more towards:

  • Driver problems
  • Windows corruption
  • Device configuration
  • A Windows update conflict

Bluetooth is absent from firmware and Windows

This increases the likelihood of:

  • Firmware configuration
  • A loose wireless module
  • A failed Wi-Fi/Bluetooth card
  • Motherboard failure

Not every firmware interface displays Bluetooth separately, so absence from one BIOS information page is not conclusive.

When the Wi-Fi Still Works but Bluetooth Does Not

A combined wireless card can fail partially.

The Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functions may use:

  • Different drivers
  • Different interfaces
  • Separate firmware functions

Therefore, working Wi-Fi does not prove that the Bluetooth portion is healthy.

Likewise, replacing only the Bluetooth driver may not help when the physical card’s Bluetooth controller has failed.

When Bluetooth Disappears After Sleep

If Bluetooth works after restarting but vanishes after sleep or hibernation, investigate:

  • Wireless driver
  • BIOS or firmware
  • Windows power management
  • Docking-station firmware
  • Fast Startup
  • Modern Standby behaviour

Install current manufacturer-approved platform, Bluetooth and wireless drivers.

A repeatable sleep-related disappearance is usually more useful evidence than a one-off missing toggle.

Do not rely on restarting the computer every day as the permanent solution.

When Bluetooth Disappears After Every Windows Update

Record:

  • The Windows KB number
  • The Bluetooth driver version before and after
  • The computer model
  • The adapter model
  • Any Device Manager error code

Check whether Windows Update replaced the manufacturer’s driver.

Where appropriate:

  1. Roll back the driver.
  2. Install the manufacturer’s supported package.
  3. Restart.
  4. Check for a newer corrected Windows or driver update.

Do not permanently disable all Windows updates to preserve Bluetooth.

The long-term fix should be a compatible driver or firmware package.

When Hardware Failure Is Likely

Arrange hardware assessment when:

  • Bluetooth is absent from Windows and firmware.
  • The adapter repeatedly appears and disappears.
  • Manufacturer diagnostics report a failure.
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth fail together.
  • Device Manager reports that Windows cannot find the hardware.
  • The computer has suffered liquid or impact damage.
  • Reinstalling Windows and the correct drivers makes no difference.
  • An external adapter works normally while the internal radio does not.

Possible physical causes include:

  • Failed wireless module
  • Loose internal card
  • Motherboard fault
  • Damaged antenna or cable
  • Internal USB-controller failure

Opening a modern laptop can damage the battery, antennas, ribbon cables or motherboard. Follow the official service manual or arrange professional repair.

Should You Use a USB Bluetooth Adapter?

A supported USB Bluetooth adapter can provide a practical workaround when:

  • The internal adapter has failed.
  • The internal hardware cannot support a required Bluetooth feature.
  • Repairing an old computer is uneconomical.
  • A temporary replacement is needed.

Before buying one, check:

  • Windows 11 support
  • Required Bluetooth profiles
  • Whether the vendor provides signed drivers
  • Compatibility with headsets, controllers or specialist equipment
  • Business security requirements

Disable the failed internal adapter if it repeatedly conflicts with the external one.

A USB adapter is not a substitute for repairing a laptop still covered by warranty.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Pairing the accessory repeatedly

When the Bluetooth radio itself is missing, changing the headphones or mouse will not restore the Windows adapter.

Installing a generic driver-updater tool

Use Windows Update and the exact computer manufacturer.

Deleting every hidden Bluetooth entry

Hidden entries may contain useful evidence about the missing radio.

Removing the driver before downloading a replacement

You may leave Windows with no usable package.

Changing unrelated BIOS settings

Bluetooth does not require disabling Secure Boot or clearing the TPM.

Assuming working Wi-Fi proves the card is healthy

The Bluetooth portion can fail independently.

Restarting the service indefinitely

A service restart cannot repair hardware that Windows no longer detects.

Resetting Windows too early

Confirm the radio, driver, firmware and hardware state first.

Opening the laptop without a service procedure

Wireless cards and antenna connectors can be fragile.

When Bluetooth has vanished from Windows 11:

  1. Check Bluetooth & devices in Settings.
  2. Check Quick Settings.
  3. Turn Airplane mode off.
  4. Check the physical wireless switch or function key.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Perform the manufacturer-approved power reset.
  7. Run the Get Help Bluetooth troubleshooter.
  8. Open Device Manager.
  9. Check Bluetooth, Network adapters and Other devices.
  10. Enable View > Show hidden devices.
  11. Record any Device Manager error code.
  12. Select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
  13. Install Windows updates.
  14. Check Optional driver updates.
  15. Update the Bluetooth adapter through Device Manager.
  16. Install the exact manufacturer Bluetooth and wireless drivers.
  17. Reinstall the adapter where appropriate.
  18. Roll back a recently changed driver.
  19. Restart the Bluetooth Support Service.
  20. Confirm Bluetooth is enabled in BIOS or UEFI.
  21. Check manufacturer radio-control software.
  22. Disconnect docks, hubs and USB adapters.
  23. Review Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer.
  24. Run DISM and SFC if Windows components appear damaged.
  25. Run manufacturer hardware diagnostics.
  26. Arrange repair when the radio remains undetected.

Find Out Whether Windows Can See the Radio

When Bluetooth disappears from Settings, the accessory is not normally the place to start.

The key question is:

Can Windows still detect the Bluetooth radio, and is the correct driver allowing it to start?

Check Airplane mode, Device Manager, hidden devices, the manufacturer driver and firmware configuration in that order. When the hardware remains absent after those checks, the internal wireless module may require professional assessment.
