Best ways to speed up your PC for work
A slow computer can make even the simplest job frustrating.
Applications take longer to open, Microsoft Teams struggles during meetings, Outlook freezes, browser tabs become unresponsive and employees spend more time waiting for their computers than actually working.
For a business, those few minutes quickly add up.
The good news is that a slow PC does not automatically need replacing. In many cases, performance can be improved by removing unnecessary software, controlling startup applications, installing updates or upgrading a specific component.
The important thing is to diagnose why the computer is slow before spending money.
Here are some of the best ways to speed up a Windows PC for work.
1. Restart Your Computer Properly
It sounds incredibly simple, but restarting a computer is one of the first things worth trying.
Many employees leave their PCs running for days or weeks, particularly when they use laptops and simply close the lid at the end of the working day.
During that time, applications can consume increasing amounts of memory, Windows services may develop problems and updates can remain waiting for a restart.
A proper Restart reloads Windows and clears temporary problems that may have built up.
This is also worth distinguishing from shutting down.
Windows Fast Startup can mean a normal shutdown does not perform exactly the same complete reset as a restart. If you are troubleshooting strange Windows behaviour, use Restart rather than repeatedly shutting the computer down and turning it back on.
It is one of the quickest performance fixes you can try.
2. Check What Is Running in Task Manager
Before randomly uninstalling programs, find out what is actually using your computer's resources.
Open Task Manager by pressing:
Ctrl + Shift + Esc
Look at the Processes section and pay attention to:
- CPU
- Memory
- Disk
- Network
If one application is constantly using a large percentage of the processor or memory, you may have found the reason the computer feels slow.
For example, you might discover that a browser has dozens of tabs consuming several gigabytes of RAM or that an application is continually using the disk in the background.
Task Manager provides useful clues about whether the problem is related to hardware limitations, Windows itself or a particular piece of software.
3. Disable Unnecessary Startup Applications
One of the biggest causes of slow business computers is the number of applications configured to start automatically.
Install enough software over several years and your computer may eventually attempt to launch:
Microsoft Teams, OneDrive, Adobe utilities, printer software, update managers, messaging platforms and numerous other applications every time Windows starts.
Some are necessary.
Many aren't.
In Windows 11, go to:
Settings > Apps > Startup
Review the list and disable software that genuinely does not need to launch every time the computer starts.
You can also manage startup applications from Task Manager.
Be sensible rather than disabling everything. Security software, endpoint-management tools, backup applications and other business systems may need to run automatically.
If you are unsure what something does, check before switching it off.
4. Remove Software You No Longer Need
Old software doesn't just take up storage space.
Some programs install background services, scheduled tasks and automatic update tools that continue consuming resources long after you have stopped using the application itself.
Review installed software periodically and remove applications that are genuinely no longer required.
Go to:
Settings > Apps > Installed apps
You may find old utilities, trial software or applications installed for a project that ended years ago.
Businesses should be particularly careful with unnecessary software because reducing the number of applications on a computer can also reduce the security attack surface.
Every application represents something else that potentially needs updating and maintaining.
A cleaner PC is often easier to support as well as faster.
5. Keep Windows and Your Applications Updated
Updates are commonly associated with security, but they can also resolve performance problems.
Windows updates may contain fixes for:
- Compatibility issues
- Drivers
- Memory leaks
- Application crashes
- Stability problems
- Hardware performance
- Security vulnerabilities
Your applications should also be kept updated.
For a business, updates are generally better managed centrally rather than relying on every employee to remember to install them.

There is another important consideration in 2026: standard Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025.
Businesses still operating unsupported Windows 10 computers should have a clear upgrade, replacement or Extended Security Updates strategy rather than continuing to run ageing systems indefinitely.
6. Check How Much RAM Your PC Has
RAM is one of the most important components affecting everyday workplace performance.
Modern users often have Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, cloud applications and multiple browser tabs open simultaneously.
All of those consume memory.
When your computer runs short of physical RAM, Windows may need to move more information between memory and storage, which can make everything feel slower.
For a new general-purpose business PC in 2026, 16GB of RAM is a sensible starting point for many users.
People running heavier applications, large datasets, virtual machines, CAD software, development environments or particularly demanding multitasking workloads may benefit from 32GB or more.
If an otherwise capable PC only has 8GB and constantly sits close to full memory utilisation, increasing the RAM could provide a noticeable improvement.
7. Upgrade From a Hard Drive to an SSD
If your computer still runs Windows from a traditional mechanical hard disk, moving to a Solid-State Drive (SSD) can be one of the most dramatic performance upgrades available.
Traditional hard drives contain moving components.
SSDs don't.
That means an SSD can access data significantly faster, making operations such as booting Windows, opening applications and loading files feel much more responsive.
Many modern computers already include SSDs, but older office PCs may still be running mechanical hard drives.
Before replacing an otherwise serviceable computer, it can therefore be worth checking its storage technology.
However, an SSD upgrade should not be used to prolong the life of hardware that is already obsolete, insecure or unable to run supported operating systems.
Sometimes replacement is the better investment.
8. Make Sure Your Storage Isn't Nearly Full
Even an SSD can become problematic if it is almost completely full.
Large Downloads folders, duplicated files, temporary files and old application installers can slowly consume available space.
Windows includes Storage Sense, which can help manage temporary files automatically.
Go to:
Settings > System > Storage
You can see what is consuming space and determine whether anything can safely be removed.
For business environments, this is also an opportunity to consider where information should actually be stored.
Important business documents should generally not exist solely on an individual employee's local computer.
Microsoft 365 services such as OneDrive and SharePoint can provide more appropriate storage, collaboration and backup options when configured correctly.
9. Don't Assume the PC Is the Problem
Sometimes the computer isn't actually slow.
The network is.
Modern business applications rely heavily on internet connectivity. Microsoft 365, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, hosted applications, VoIP systems and cloud-based CRM platforms all depend on the quality of the connection.
If local programs operate normally but cloud applications feel sluggish, investigate the network.
Look at:
- Broadband performance
- Upload speed
- Wi-Fi signal quality
- Latency
- Packet loss
- Router and firewall performance
- Network congestion
There is no single broadband speed that every business should have.
A small office with five employees has very different requirements from an organisation with 80 people using Teams, cloud storage and VoIP simultaneously.
Your connection should therefore be sized around the actual number of users and the services they rely upon.
10. Scan for Malware and Unwanted Software
A computer becoming unexpectedly slow can occasionally indicate malware or unwanted software.
Malicious processes may consume processor power, memory, disk resources or network bandwidth.
Unexpected browser extensions, pop-ups, redirected searches or unknown programs appearing in Task Manager should be investigated.
Business computers should have centrally managed endpoint security and preferably modern Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) capabilities rather than relying solely on occasional manual antivirus scans.
If performance suddenly changes without an obvious reason, security should be part of the investigation.
11. Check Whether the Computer Is Overheating
Processors are designed to protect themselves when temperatures become excessive.
If cooling is inadequate, the CPU may reduce its performance — known as thermal throttling.
You might notice:
- Fans constantly running at maximum speed
- The computer becoming unusually hot
- Performance gradually dropping during intensive work
- Sudden shutdowns
- Applications becoming slower after the PC has been running for a while
Blocked vents, accumulated dust and failing cooling systems can all contribute.
Laptops should also be used on a firm surface where ventilation is not obstructed rather than on bedding, cushions or other soft materials.
12. Consider Whether It Is Simply Time to Replace the PC
There comes a point where continuously upgrading an old computer stops making financial sense.
Suppose an employee loses ten minutes every day waiting for an ageing PC.
Over approximately 220 working days, that's more than 36 hours of lost working time each year.
Multiply that across several employees and an apparently inexpensive decision to keep old hardware running can become remarkably costly.
Replacement should therefore be considered in terms of productivity as well as hardware price.
Signs that replacement may make more sense include:
- Unsupported operating systems
- Inability to upgrade to Windows 11
- Repeated hardware failures
- Poor battery health
- Insufficient RAM with no upgrade path
- Very old processors
- Failing storage
- Frequent crashes
- Increasing support requirements
Many businesses find that a structured three-to-five-year device lifecycle provides a useful starting point, although individual requirements will vary.
Don't Upgrade Until You Know What's Wrong
Perhaps the most important advice is not to guess.
A slow computer could be caused by:
- Insufficient RAM
- A failing SSD
- Software
- Malware
- Windows corruption
- Network problems
- Overheating
- Too many background applications
- An ageing processor
- A nearly full disk
Replacing a perfectly good PC because of a Wi-Fi problem wastes money.
Adding RAM to a computer with a failing SSD won't solve the underlying problem either.
Proper diagnosis allows businesses to spend money where it actually makes a difference.
